Where oh where did you get a G400 Max for $150?  Even the rough ones are going for about 225 lately on the bay.  And a new one still in the plastic went for 350.

I got it off the bst last winter.

Agree with a lot of people here that I'd go Sub 70 on irons. I'd look for a Cobra LTD as driver can be had cheap and that thing was as forgiving as anything on the market now.

When I ordered my set, I requested D2 since I went with the MMT80 graphite, and that was about as high as they could get, per the fitter I spoke with.  I would imagine one of your local repair shops could increase the SW for you, it would be worth a couple of calls to investigate as they really are a GREAT set of irons -- IMHO and those of many on the forum thread dedicated to the 0211 as well.

In my Datrek - DG lite II cart bag attached via Top-Lok to my Bag Boy - Quad XL - I'm decidedly brand agnostic:

For starters, a reality check:

  • Srixon Z585 irons are hard to find used, and generally start above $700.
  • Srixon Z565 irons start at $500, and are often Value range (well-used)

Since you like Srixon, consider:

  • Irons
    • Srixon Z545 Irons 4-PW Stiff Modus105 Stiff for $207.50 (+$19), or
    • Srixon Z545 Irons 5-PW DG S300 for $227 (FS!)
  • Wedges* - Three Cle RTX-3 good:  60/6, 56/11, 52/10 / DG shafts for $100 (+$10)
  • Driver - TaylorMade M2 9.5* driver w/ Fuji Pro 60 stiff shaft for $169 (FS!)
  • Fairway - Tour Edge CBX 4W 16.5* Diamana 70 gr. Stiff for $140 (+$14)
  • Hybrid - Tour Edge EX10 3H 19* Recoil F4 Stiff shaft for $55 (+$15)
  • Putter - You have a 5 HDCP - pull one out of your closet!
  • Bag - Ogio Shadow Fuse 304 stand bag (58% price cut!) for $130 (FS!)
Cost breakdown: $820 (+$59 shipping) || (FS!) = free shipping
Total cost: $879

This will give you 13 or 14 clubs, depending on which iron set you get.

*Caution: the Z545 PW = 44*, so you would have 8* loft gap, PW to GW.

Quality NEW clubs at a reasonable price = The Golfworks

Driver: Maltby KE4 Tour TC + Mitsubishi Tensei Blue 60 + Lamkin grip = $240 + $10 assembly = $250

Fwy: Maltby KE4 Tour TC + Fujikura Vista Pro 65 + Lamkin grip = $130 + $10 assembly = $140

Irons: Maltby PTM Chrome Forged, 4-GW + TT Dynamic Gold 105 + Lamkin grip = $480 + $40 assembly = $520

Sand Wedge: Maltby FGT + TT Dynamic Gold 115 + Lamkin grip = $60 + $10 assembly = $70

Total = $980

I just took a look at the GolfWorks site, was thinking similarly, with the STi irons as a choice.  Even with DG shafts, they'd be under $400 for 4-GW thru their Custom Shop.  If you don't need DG or KBS Tour, there are even lower priced options available, like from FST (who manufacture the KBS Tours).

I'd probably look at various used club outlets for at least the driver.  Even with pandemic-environment inflated used club prices, there's a LOT available.  You could even go back several years if you're so inclined, thanks to some companies using the same adapters for many years (TM & Cobra, at minimum).

My current set that I play with cost me about $1000 when I put it together (all bought used except for the irons which I got on sale in France) and it looks like this

Cobra F7 driver ($120)

Cobra F6 3W ($100)

Cobra F7 2/3 Hybrid ($85)

Cobra 2016 ForgedTec 4-PW with Recoil F3 shafts ($500)

Nike Engage Wedges 50, 56, and 58 [$150 for all three)

Odyssey Versa 9 putter ($50)

I just picked up a set of Apex Pro 16's with the Recoil 110 F4 shafts this past week for about $550 to see if I want to move to a slightly stiffer shaft :-). Haven't hit them yet, and when I do get to it'll probably be indoors first...

I second a set of TM Burner 2.0's, prices range from $150-$300. Then grab a driver of your choice that was made in the past 4 yrs for $200, fairway wood and/or hybrid for another $100 each. Set of wedges for $150, putter for $100 and your at around $950 at worst. I think where the most of your budget will go will be irons/driver then maybe putter to follow.

That's interesting. After my Saturday post, eBay sent me a link for a bloc of three Z585 sets - apparently new - at $675 each.

Were the Z585 and Z785 models less popular than prior Z-series irons?

Really depends what you want to play and how pristine the clubs need to be to fit your eye. I'd personally go for a mix of fun and cult classics that you'll still be able to find in good shape and not so old as to be obsolete. If you're set on Srixon irons, I'd argue that the 7 series is nearly as forgiving as the 5 and looks/feels better. The 765 irons look quite a bit bigger than most irons in their category and could easily fit your budget. Otherwise, a decent set of AP2s from 4-10 years ago could meet the budget pretty easily. As others have mentioned, Cobra drivers and woods seem to lose value very quickly so finding a couple for $200 or less (total) shouldn't bee too hard.

Dr: Cobra LTD - $120

FW: Cobra F8 - $70

Hy: Adams Idea Pro - $50

Irons: Srixon z745 or z765 - $500

Wedges: Ping Glide 2.0 - $180

Putter: Yes! Callie - $75

Club Total: $995

i like a lot what you’re saying here. And agree with a lot of the other posters on here.

I just found a set of 585/785 combo I pulled trigger on for well under $700 for what it’s worth.

driver- cobra or mizuno st190 $150ish

fairways/hybrids- I can not praise the exotics line enough. Anything CBX or ex9 and above you will be happy.$100~

irons- TM p770 2017 version/ srixons 585-565/wilsons tour v6(I have a nice set going up for sale) $400-650

wedges- gotta go Costco for new($160)

putter- have at anything $120 and less.

should be good to roll from there.

a lot of value can be had and reading through all the responses gets my winter mind running on what I can test out.

You're right, that would work well for the second set.. and probably a lot of first sets too. And  you get fresh grooves.

I just saw them today cruising Costco for supplies and grabbing some golf cloves(what a deal btw)

they look great for the price.

To your point, wedges are the one club I have always gone new with. Though a like new set of rtx3 would be fantastic! Great wedges.

I actually just did this, this past summer. I needed to keep a bag up at my parents house in Ohio for when I visit. I had some backups clubs I mailed home but ended up purchasing a set of irons, a 3 wood & a driver to create a decent bag. Here's what I've got below:

Driver - 2015 Taylormade M2 ($100)

3wood - 2009 Titleist 909 F2 ($30)

Hybrid - 2011 Adams Idea Pro A12 Hybrid (I had this laying around but saw they're $50 on 2nd swing)

Irons - 2007 Callaway XForged 4-PW ($200)

Wedges - Ping Glide 52,56,60 (I already had these as old wedges but can be had for $60 a piece on 2nd swing)

Putter - Ping Redwood Piper (Had this laying around as well but worth around $75)

So all in the bags was under $650? Which is not bad for the quality of the set.

BST hunt for a week or two like someone said, best deals on the best equipment full stop. That said if you're looking for specific older stuff, that's not really an option. If you're going into the archives TM and Adams fairways and hybrids are the ticket. Irons - that's so personal, just make sure the lofted clubs have good grooves. Driver, get something adjustable that you know will roughly fit your spin requirements. Might have to go through a few rounds of shafts before you find the right one.... but for cheap starters, Aldila Tour Blue or Green (or the newer 2kxv models), depending on your launch/feel needs - great shafts you can pick up for about $60.
