I gues my take is, how many years until he tunes that charleston down. Even Furyk changed his swing over the years. The head wobbling of Spieth is almost gone. But for a couple of years we will see it, I suppose.

Wasnt that a drill recommended to him that he made permanent? Anyhow, guess its a Dont Try This At Home.

Yeah bro...just shut down a part of your pre shot routine that has brought you success at every level of competitive golf including majors despite ridicule from armchair quarterbacks the entire time. One of the important drills that got him out of standing up out of the shot, hitting slinging draws, rotating better, and hitting it straighter. We definitely need more robotic pre shot routines on tour and more of the same.

Maybe I should try the happy dance.

The second F in my name isn't silent, in fact it's more emphasized than the first F.

It’s pronounced JefF!  With a bit of a Phuf Phuf stutter at the end?

He should remove one of the F's from his last name. It doesn't add anything, it would sound the exact same without the second F. It's just adding more work for people who do the scorecards plus the scoreboards. Frankly i think it's very selfish of him , why does he need more consonants than literally any other Wolf?

Isn't Banff located in Canada? That was a running joke on "F Troop." Or maybe it was FF Troop.

Surprised more golfers don’t have more pre swing movement

A lot a baseball players have a pronounced “hitch”.  Ruth, Bonds, Boggs etc.

gv! That was funny.

Here is Wolff on the move and a vid of him swinging without it

“[George] wanted me to open up a little bit, and so before the swing, he would have me move my shoulders and hips out to the left and work in a little pre-shot. From that point on, it’s always been my little trigger,” Wolff said

Matthew Wolff: the most exciting prospect in golf | golfweloveit

He could moonwalk past the ball before starting his backswing, it doesn't matter. What does matter is the position he gets in before impact (see the third picture in the series above). Shaft riding down the top of right forearm, right elbow pinned, and amazing depth with his arms. That is why he's one of the best young players in the game. The business end of the swing is all that matters, and he's pretty good at it.

It's also interesting to note that he definitely goes into flexion with his left wrist. Doing that holds the clubface in a closed and stable position so all he has to do is rotate like hell through impact with a stable clubface. Rahm also does this, as does DJ. It would seem to be the future of the modern golf swing, and it makes sense, because it removes timing the release of the clubface.

His backswing makes getting into the flexion and ulnar deviation that Monte talks about completely effortless. The momentum of the club as it shifts does that for him. It's a great move.

Good point. It really does. It is a very athletic golf swing and Wolff is a very athletic young man.

I was intrigued by his move and the benefits that backswing could offer, so I tried it for a while. It really does make shallowing a breeze, but you get some funny looks at the range!.

Kudos for having a Wodehouse quote in your signature...he wrote some hilarious stuff...especially his golf stories.

I used to like them, getting too close to being the “oldest member “.

  • 2 weeks later...

His swing is supposed to be modeled from a baseball swing.  We all have our quirks whether it be putting, chipping, full swing, etc.  I waggle my club to relieve tension in my arms and start my swing.  I also don't have a lot of wrist hinge when taking the club back.  Things ingrained since child hood.  Wolffie is no different.

I've been doing something similar since before Wolff was born and I gotta say it makes a huge difference. I don't feel it's simply a mental/waggle thing either. There's something about putting your body into a position closer to impact that makes everything feel 10 times more natural to me, and it completely changes how I strike the ball. Could be that my swing just blows and I'm doing it all wrong, which I probably wouldn't argue, but the point is getting rid of that one move would likely not be a trivial change for him, and if it works, who cares.
