2021 Callaway Epic Speed Max - Leaked Photo

Recommended Posts

Did notice they all sounded great and find the Speed and Max ls similarities interesting. I guess the max ls is just more adjustable for ball flight. Good review, thanks for sharing.

Seems to pic up a handful of yards/ballspeed with a non fitted club versus a fitted club only 3 months old. Not too shabby. Would like to see the numbers with Pro White after a couple range sessions to get it dialed in.

I would say so and the LS gives you the sliding weight.

Don’t let those numbers scare you off of trying the Max. I have similar ball speed and  all three heads spun around 2200 for me. No way the Max is 20+ shorter when struck reasonably well.

Without any ability to test (lockdown), any recommendation for someone coming from an Epic Flash SubZero?  My thought are the Max LS but appreciate your knowledge and insight.  Thanks.

Sorry to here about the lockdown; hope it gets lifted soon.

What was it about the Flash Sub that made you choose it? Did you make adjustments to the loft, lie and sliding weight?

The Max was a 10.5° head too. Even with the tester’s own fitted PXG 9° driver he had pretty high spin readings (2850/2210/2710). His lowest spin with a Callaway driver was with the 9° LS @ 2692 rpm. I doubt plugging in his Tensei Pro White 70TX is going to make a substantial difference from the Atmos Black TS 6X.

I went with it as the fitter wanted to bring my spin down and of the 2 models the SZ was able to bring down. It is a 9 degree head playing at +1 in “D” setting.  I typically hit a slight draw or fade. I played and have always played the sliding weight in maximum draw position, just provides little extra reinforcement.

I rarely hit a slice, my miss would be left bit I believe when I get a little stiff and body not moving as they should (all arms, little hips).

Basically none of those spin numbers were accurate (italicized), Trackman indoors isn't great. Also his angle of attack was negative a fair bit.

All that being said the ball speed #s were solid and they look/sound awesome.

I am still in 2015/16 GBB, going to order a head blind, not sure if speed or regular max, like the slider weight, but speed head looks better, anxious for reviews on Monday

I've let a left handed buddy of mine in his 70's (very low single digit) that still uses the '16 GBB test drive the Speed and Max heads and he's gotten along really well with the Max head, but of course YMMV. That GBB driver is one of those that I dread seeing walk up looking to be fit for an improvement because it was and still is so good. Nothing flashy about it, just quietly and effectively does the business.

I've also found the Max head to be excellent when lofted down and weight pushed to the toe; becomes surprisingly neutral when configured as such. Obviously can see where many will prefer the more muted sound/feel and compact footprint of the Speed head or may need the greater fade bias from the Max LS and its Trip Diamond-ish shaping. However, the Max offers a VERY rare combination of tons or horsepower but with sufficient traction control to keep even me from figuratively wrapping it around a light pole.

I attended a seminar introducing the new Callaway equipment and a similar question came up (What's the lowest spinning configuration for people coming from a SZ head).  The Callaway response was to go with the Max LS head at 9* turned down to 8* is the lowest spinning configuration of the 3 drivers.

They specifically mentioned the Max LS is geared at the young/college type players who prefer a neutral sitting head to play straightish shots with high launch and low spin, and the SZ heads were too low spin for too many which is why they went away from it.

Another reason for the SubZero moniker going away is likely that it's been mostly a misnomer. The OG XR16 SZ did truly have its CG below the club's equator or Zero Line, and that was only when the heavy weight was forward. None of the other SZ models truly were, regardless of how they were configured.

I don’t fear the left side, the opposite, so would have a Max 9 turned up to 10 with weight towards heel. The Ventus black will help kill spin, play it in my GBB now.

if the Speed is fade biased, probably have my answer.

I wouldn't characterize the Speed as being fade biased. The Speed Trip Diamond likely is, but not the retail version. Speed is supposed to the the most neutral of the 3 heads, but of course the directional bias on the two Max heads can be tuned somewhat.

Eyes play tricks.

Sole 2 identical drivers on the floor. Look down at them with your eyes centered exactly between the 2 of them.

Don't they look different ?

Then switch 'em.

Spot on. Face shape will likely be much different too. Just pointing out Callaway is getting closer to having their best head available to the masses.
