13 clubs....help me with #14!!!

So I'm getting the bag set for this year, and it looks like this-

Driver (9*)

3W (14.5*)
5w (18*)
4h (22*)

5i-9i (25*-41*)
PW (46*)
GW (52*)
SW (58*)

I've considered adding another wedge and going to 50-54-58, but I have played the 3 wedge bag for years and never find myself wishing for another club.  Driving iron maybe????  Courses I play are not super long and have hard to medium conditions, with some tight off-the-tee landing zones.  Or do I just stick with 13 and enjoy carrying a lighter bag?

Thanks!

Looks like your bag is well thought-out.  Unless you're finding shots you don't have a good club for, I wouldn't stress about it.

I'd say a 62 or 64 degree. Why not?

You have 5, 6, and 6 degrees difference in your most valuable scoring irons.

Manufacturers almost universally have 4 degrees at the top of the sets, presumably to have a 10 yard gap (or similar) between the scoring clubs.

I find that works very well for me. So, after my 44* PW I have 48, 52, 56, and 60 to fill in pretty much every 10 yard shot with a short iron. 🙃

I'm currently working through this as well. My situation is a bit different in that I enjoy playing 4 wedges but have a hole at the top of my bag between driver and 20* Hybrid. This wasn't an issue until end of November when I changed my driver length/setup and added 30ish yards on average.

TM Sim Driver - 335

U500 2i- 265- Play off tee on most par 4's

Idea Pro 20* - 255

Mp20 4i-9i- 225-155

PW 47*- 147

GW 51*- 131

SW 56*- 115

LW 60*- 95

Options:

3/4/5- 300

3i- 240

I do not like hitting 9i for whatever reason. Think it goes back to a set of Nike Pro Combo's that had an eyesore for a 9i. I always play 3/4 8i or full PW at 155 depending on conditions. For that reason, I'm considering pulling my 9i and adding a 3/4/5 wood depending on which one gets me the right number.

Also not enjoying the Hybrid at the moment and have pulled the U500 multiple times recently from the FW at 250+. May pull that and add my 3i back in. I hit it just as well as the hybrid.

The top of your bag seems good. If you want to introduce another club, the bottom of the bag is the place to look.

As others have mentioned, I like 4* gaps in my wedges. To do that and add another wedge, you're probably looking at switching out at least one other club, if not the whole set.

If you're comfortable with the current gapping and just want to add something versatile, then a 62* or 64* would be fun to mess around with,

Fair enough. Let's call it 300-320 and can get it up to 335 with regularity because I'm nowhere near the ball striker of any of these guys.

Yardages used were top end based on how I feel like my game is trending.

Yes to the driving iron if it helps you for this reason, but if you're already comfortable with your wedges and setup, no need to change a thing really.

I personally don't love the gap from 4 hybrid to 5 wood you have. For me, I don't like knocking yardage off fairways. Either putting the 4i back in and going 3 hybrid, lofting the 5w down and adding a 7w or going 3w 7w 4h. My course has some 230 par 3s though and I'm pretty sensitive to missing yardages in the long end!

Seriously... I'm 47 and starting the ramp up to 50 in earnest, stopped playing competitively in '03 and I've been in Coachella for a year getting in shape and training. I'm 6'1" 180 pretty normal, always was longer than average but not crazy long for a tour player. Last month I played La Quinta Mountain Course with three retired NHL legends, not what you would call small humans and can all hit it. I'm FIFTY by all of them all day MINIMUM, 17 is a little downhill but into the wind like 455 or whatever. We all hit good tee shots, two of them don't make the grass let alone the fairway and can't sniff reaching the green, the third hits the rough short of the fairway and has like 215 in and doesn't get there with 5 wood. I hit cut 8 iron in from 152. I'm a professional, this is my job and Rory et al are 20-30 by me. Rory can hit a straight blade 7I 200 like I hit a 52 125, it's not even hard. It's BUTTAH..

Mr 335,  I guarantee I can one hop a 3W by you. It's not a problem and Tony Finau can hit a driving iron by me, could probably airmail me with it. I watched him one hop it on #1 at Pebble, it's pure insanity how far these guys can hit it. They've gone to plaid, it's Ludicrous Speed and has been for over ten years.

So chill and get a good 3 wood, it's all good dude.

If you like your 13 club set-up consider a lefty iron for "those" situations. My brother plays to a 2 cap and can hit his lefty 8i 100 or so yards. Sometimes it's a very good weapon.

Yeah gonna try out a nice high flying 7 wood and maybe a forgiving 3 hybrid (20-21*) but generally I don't smooth the fairway from 225 as much as cut it. With my natural draw a "cut" swing generally is at best a Nick Faldo 2 yard bleeder. It tends to fly a bit higher with more spin and lands softer. Definitely my Par 5/long par 3 shot.

We can all tell you to add a driving iron or to tighten the loft differences in your wedges.  But have you actually actively thought about it as you are playing?  How many shots you face in a typical round where having another club would be useful.  More loft around the greens?  Better bunker club?  More controllable club from the tee on short par 4's?

When you play, how often do you think you would be better off with a different club than the one you are hitting.  Whatever comes up the most is what you should add.

I played an original Burner 3 wood and 5 wood for YEARS until I finally broke the 3 wood. Upgraded to TS2 4 wood and liked it but didn't love it. Tried the SIM 5 wood and knew instantly there was no need for me to have a 3 wood anymore. Put a 3 wood length ADIZ in mine and it's as long as any 3 wood I've hit this year. I wish it had a bit more forgiveness but I can live with it for the performance I get off the tee and the deck for the most part. Off the tee if I hit it solid it goes almost as far as my driver.
