I knew a bloke years ago who played cack-handed (as we called it) like that. He was a big bloke, hit the ball a long way, and played off two. I think he did it to fight a hook, because I remember that was his miss.

I respectfully disagree - when you zoom in, you can just about see that the stamping is not Pat Pending (and there would be absolutely no benefit to playing one of those anyway).

Even as a Ping obsessive, I have lost track of what is legal and what isn't.  Did Ping/the USGA cancel the grandfathering ruling loophole which allowed Eye 2s to be used and which Mickelson took advantage of in recent years until other players complained? 

 

The bag is all very old school (G15 driver and looks like old irons) so it's also possible the player, whoever he is, got the grooves reworked at Ping so he could keep using his old tech.

This is even crazier to me, because they aren't cheap. It used to be they would have 1 or 2 pre-qualifiers.

Any V Groove Eye 2 is legal '82-'84 included.  Phil was using the "square groove" loophole hence the decisions to ban Eye 2 entirely.

If someone has submitted a set and then they have been tested and approved by the USGA then they are conforming. Same thing happened with the Hogan 99 Apex they were submitted and deemed conforming

Sheesh.  Look at that field.  And 3 qualifiers out of 124?  I think it's almost easier to win the tournament than try and Monday qualify for it.

It's a whole other side of the tour most(including me) don't ever think about.  The pressure has to be completely off the charts.  I am sure there are guys out there who are just "giving it a shot" without a lot of worry about money but there are some that this is the ledge.

He's on  page 8 of the Monday qualifier , but I see it says farmers on some of the signage so must have been a mix up in the photos , I haven't seen his name in a long time and just thought it odd that he'd be at a qualifier , so just a mix up in the photos thats all .🙃🙂

In viewing all of these photos, I have some things to point out or like 

• Absolutely love the FJ shoes & Titleist CB's a lot of players are using
• you're allowed to use a range finder in a qualifier?  
• funny - one of the guys putting had his shirt tail hanging out .... faux pas! 
• Driver count/leaders .... Callaway, TM, Titleist, Ping
• $450 for an amateur to try to make the top 3 out of 150 players?  Is that really worth it?  I guess if you have enough cash to throw around & have confidence in your game
• Pro's hitting off of mats?  And with range balls?  Not off the grass?  Surprised by this one
• A lot of Pro's look like they don't have their cards or are in the Top 100 (i.e. didn't get an invite to the WMO, hence the qualifier) ... Molinari, Hideki M, Jimmy Walker, Chase Koepka (you know who's brother), Jeff Sluman's brother Trevor & a few others 
• Some using older equipment was also a surprise ... the old TM RAC MC irons, Mizuno MP64's, PING Zing irons, YONEX.  I would figure with their association with OEM's they would have the most up to date technology.  But I guess if you're used to a certain club/set & are afraid of change. 

Thanks for posting these pics!  Very interesting to see inside the ropes & their bags.  One day way back when, I had the chance to do this in college, but life took me a different direction.  I guess things happen for a reason, as they say.
