Why do we collectively continue to buy new drivers each year?

Yeah.  That's right.

Hypothetically speaking, I've heard stories on this site of hackers with $2k+ clubs custom fitted at their local Club Champion being paired up with total strangers shooting par or better with clubs that look like it came out of a Goodwill.   Wouldn't you feel the least intimidated by them?

I buy and have what I want. Could care less about somebody beating me with Goodwill clubs. I’d say good for them! Also don’t care what some stranger I get paired with thinks of me.

I lose a bit on these types of transactions but when you spread the cost over the year it really is a minimal cost to play/use what I want for the year.

I just like new things for the year to get me excited about the coming season.

As long as it fits in the budget and gives you enjoyment, then I file that under "Life is short, enjoy it while it lasts".

No I do my best to not feel intimidated by anyone. We all put our pants on 1 leg at a time.

Personally I don't care if someone drives up in a Porsche, wears a Patek Phillipe watch, has the latest set of PXG's and shoots 153 as long as they are enjoyable to play with and are a decent human being...Same applies for the person that shows up in a 1986 Chevette, with a Casio and a set of blades and persimmon woods that shoots 66.

I enjoy the game along with spending rime with and meeting good people..

You put more thought and time in your response than I did! Haha. Well put. 👍🏼

I dare say that person is spending most of the budget to keep that Chevette on the road, so there's not anything left to upgrade the blades and persimmon woods (I have a Casio that is still telling time perfectly twenty years later).  And if they're shooting 66 with those, they have preternatural hand-eye coordination, with which I was not so blessed to posses.

I think ur kinda missing the moral to Simmers point. As for your post. Perhaps money isn’t the issue in his example. Could be this guy just doesn’t care too much about what he drives or what clubs he plays??? I’ve learned it’s best to never assume. When my cousin got out of college with a computer science degree, he got a job at the Amazon HQ. Jeff Bezos drove an old pinto.

And Sam Walton drove an old pickup truck.  Some guys don't give a rip what they drive, (I still drive my 2004 F-150 Heritage), and some guys do care.  Like I said in an earlier post, "Life is short, play what gives you enjoyment" with the caveat that it's not causing you a financial disaster.

When is someone going to offer a raw driver?

That would certainly counter the "new and shiny" reason😆

I think most have said it but everyone spends money differently. Some people just like buying new drivers. If everyone spent the bare minimum on necessities only many of us would be out of work

Why is spending money on yourself a bad thing?  Are you supposed to live like a miser, leave your family all the cash and then they get to have all the fun and burn thru it rapidly?  Humbug says Uncle Cardy

F that.   But hey, YMMV

I got a sports car at 50 (hadn’t had one since I sold my Eagle Talon turbo when I was 25-27) and buy all the golf stuff I want.  LIFE IS TOO SHORT

The best player that I play with (there are some better at my club/muni but I don't really play with them) plays to about a 1 handicap when he's playing a lot and he plays Callaway Diablo irons that are 12 years old and a Rocketballz driver that can't be much newer.

I purchased a Mav Max driver from CPO this past winter to replace my XR16, and I see positive improvements. This purchase accomplished alleviating a 5 year gap in technology. I did notice a difference in several aspects in the new driver. These included a more solid sound upon contact, a more solid contact, greater distance (imo), greater forgiveness, and a better balance/feel holding the club. These are what I feel 5 years of technology has done for me. I am still impressed each time I hit it compared to my XR16, which is considered a very good driver. To my advantage, I purchased 'like new' from CPO at $260 delivered to my door. I just can't justify paying $500+ for the new Epic drivers, when I don't think the technology is that much different. I do understand how some change drivers every year though, to try something new, because this is their area in life that they focus on. Nothing like having the latest golf toy in your hands!

I buy a different driver almost every year. but have stuck with a Cobra Ltd for 4 years .  Trying out newer stuff just confirms there isnt much gain to be had anymore.  Mostly.  I 'll just buy for a different look or feel.

Other than falling for  and overpaying for the G400 Max hype, , I wont spend much on a newer driver.  My latest experiment is a Mavrik SZ which I paid $90 more than I sold my F9 driver for.

I find it more crazy, how much people  will spend  to play  the latest shaft of the week.  The amount of hype generated is mind boggling     ever time Rory, Tiger DJ... etc   try a  new shaft on tour.

Just to clarify, I had a G and it cracked by the hosel. They sent me the 400 max but I wanted another G head which they no longer had and it turns out I liked the 400 max.

I played a big bertha from when i was in middle school to about 2005, replaced that with a nike ignite which i absolutely love and still use on occasion, and replaced the nike in 2019 with a 2016 M2. If i find something i like i keep using it. I actually bought a Sim and sold it because it didn't out perform my M2.
