Buying Tomorrow. The Options. What Would You Choose?

Out of these choices, tell me the deals that are good or great, and the ones you think sound awful.  For an older beginner ready to get into the sport without breaking the bank.  Needs to hit straight with lots of forgiveness.

Big Bertha X-12.  4-SW.  Pretty good to great condition.  $249

Ping G20.  5-W.  Good condition.  $225.

Callaway Steelhead X-14. 3-SW.  New grips, pretty good condition.  $200.

Tommy Armour 845 the ones with black and gold on back.  Good to pretty good condition.  $90.

Taylormade RAC OS 3-9.  Good to pretty good condition.  $100.

Mizuno MX-20.  4-PW.  Good condition.  $140.

Callaway X-22.  6-PW.  Pretty good condition.   $196.

You didn't mention your swing speed or what shafts each of these have.  I know you're a beginner, but this is no way to pick clubs.

Yeah, that part kind of gets me about swing speed.  I live in a pretty small town where we don’t have places to figure that stuff out close by.  All of the shafts are steel regular flex except one at is uniflex.  Thanks for the help.  I thought some people would choose the X-22’s.

I played the Mizuno MX-20s for about 15 years.  Only put them aside because I got the newest Mizzys at the time - JPX919 forged.  Get the Mizunos.  You won't be disappointed.

The X-14 looks like a good deal but even in such a SGI clubhead you probably won't get much use out of the 3 and 4 irons. 

 

But of the sets you mention, I just love the Ping G20. Too bad that set doesn't have the U wedge and maybe even the S wedge. The U wedge in particular I really liked when I had G20's. 

 

It's really hard to imagine a more forgiving set of irons than the G20 while not being at all funky looking, other than the very wide soles. I'm a big fan of very wide sole irons for beginners and high handicappers.

How far do you hit a 7 iron?

 

honestly, I’d be more concerned about shaft weight... can you hit them all? Just pick the set that looks good at address and feels great when you swing it.

Ping G20.  There’s really no other choice, and I’m not a Ping guy, but you can probably sell them for very near to that price when you’re done with them.  Much less frustration than you’ll experience from the Mizunos as a guy just starting.

Pings or 845’s

The 845’s are a solid club that lends itself to a wide range of skill levels.  That would be a great club for very little cash.

The Pings are too wide a sole for some, but it too lends itself to a wide range of players and as already mentioned will retain value if you want out of them!

Both great clubs to start with IMO.

Get the X14 I know you have a budget and that set cover you through the sw but they will also be a great starter set

great clubs, forgiving

and assuming they have a factory off the shelf shaft, the regular to stiff won’t be massively different, 

6/PW is enough for now, you add a 4/5 hybrid, 

pull the trigger !!!

Had the X 22's for sometime loved them the uniflex is supposed to be between a stiff and reg flex over priced though.

A. Due to COVID, probably not a lot of Golf Clinics available. These are sessions where beginners get together and learn different parts of the game. Costs are usually low because golf industry wants to "grow the game."

 

B. Any chance you could combine a beginner's lesson and club selection? Just a lesson or two can show you the basics. Self-taught golfers often develop bad habits that can make it hard to play well.  Golf shops often have slightly used sets you can try out before you buy. Make sure you don't get clubs that just don't work for you.

 

If A and B don't work, go with the Ping G irons. Only a few years old, and really launch the ball well.

Several viable choices but the Ping G20 and Cally Steelheads stand out. But that’s because I like the look of those. What you like is what matters.

Even though I love the 845s, I don't think the ones you described are the original 1988 versions (no gold anywhere on the clubhead).  That being said, I'd get the X-14s for the best value for your dollar as they're tour proven clubs, forgiving, and you get more clubs (3-SW).
