Generation 3 P790 in 2021?

Most of us are trained fitters. Some aren’t though. I understand trusting yourself more than a fitter. I tell every one of my fitting that they are the ones hitting the clubs so trust what they feel. Data numbers should only count for so much. You gotta like what you hit.

Gotcha. Other than a Dick’s I don’t have a big box within 75 miles. I have a friend and former college golfer that manages a Club Champion so I use him.

I am liking the direction iron are moving to. They look better and better. I just got fitted with the P7MC and I was told there is potential new version coming out next year does anyone have any information on that.

That's an entire year away. TM is on a two year cycle for their P irons. So next year should also see new P770s, etc.

100% it's sound. I mean what, is a forged clubhead softer as in, less ball speed? Any actual force felt in the hands needs to travel up the shaft, through some tape, through a grip, through a glove on one hand, etc.

Ping ran a few tests. With noise cancelling headphones on, golfers couldn't tell if they were hitting a forged club or a cast one. Then they made two different clubheads, one forged, one cast, but looked the same. 15 of their tour staff hit them. Only 1 got it right. 14 staff players couldn't tell which was which. Then they ran another test, two cast heads, but one said "forged" on it. 1/3 of golfers said the Forged one was softer.

There are of course differences in sound, but that is due to materials and shape. Forged vs Cast is barely discernible. A study was done by the engineering dept. at Virginia Tech. They said the sound from each was nearly identical. Ping i210 anyone?

Not saying it doesn't matter, it does. You have to like what you see, and hear. Whether mechanical or aural, it's what you perceive at impact, and it affects you. But when someone says they feel so buttery, usually it means it sounds so buttery 😄

I think the lighter speedfoam air is contributing to sound. I'm not one to discern differences (blades, Srixon forged CBs, GI, they all sounds similar to me when flushed) but maybe they gave up acoustics to insert more tungsten low etc.

To me, it’s mainly sound when it comes to being “clicky”. But the feel of a hollow iron to me is different from forged. I play a combo set of hollow and players cavity, and the feel and sound is undoubtedly different.

i wouldn’t rule out that a non-hollow cast head feels closer to a forged one.

It is a noise really. A fair few blind tests have shown that it’s mostly what people hear that determines if they feel a club is ‘solid’ ‘soft’ etc. changing balls for instance changes  what ‘feels’ like a harsh clicky iron to a great feeling one for a lot of people. It’s why you get such a variation of what people think irons sound or play like. They hear them differently.

Agreed. But it is the method and metric we all use right? I have no other way to explain it. I in no way said it was a bad club. Just that to me it is on the harsher side.

Check, that’s what I was trying to say that what we hear determines what we feel, so when people get annoyed at someone saying the iron they love and find butter soft is a actually very harsh,  they are just arguing about how their brain interprets the vibrations their eardrum receive differently. We actually haven’t got anyway to ‘feel’ it outside of mishits really.

I’ve had various forged mizunos, titleist, the famed endo forged TM combos, Multiple x forged iterations and now jumped 10 years forward into the p770. I like to think I can feel a difference, but perfect swings/strikes feel of nothing and sound great, just like all the others. Mishits generally sound worse, but they do for he others too, the results are a bit better though. The p790 4 and 5 I’ve been trying are similar to the 770, these ‘sound’ like they will be closer still.

Just watched that Japan video and almost vomited when they compared the toplines of 2019 to 2021.

Why on earth would Taylormade make the topline so much wider on these?  They look hideous.  I was turned off from the start but once I saw that comparison game over.

Thank God I stockpiled the 2019 version, they will be cult classics.

This new foam and tungsten sounds very exciting

Just hope they aren't as harsh and clicky as the p770's were....came from 760's and was disappointed beyond with them

fingers crossed they are quieter and a bit softer

770 felt like a small shovel to me

so....

are these harsh and clicky like the 770 or no?

that's all I and many I suspect want to know

thanks

Was also taken back by that comparison. I was wondering what the little ridge in the red circle is for. I hope it’s not just cosmetic. Also maybe it’s the satin finish and it being on the left (perspective)giving that appearance.

Look at the way the shaft is leaning. One on the right is leaning back, taking away visible topline, one on the left is leaning forward and revealing more topline. If anything, I would expect topline to be the same.

The Gen2 looks slimmer in some situations given it's rounded leading edge and relatively glossy finish, but having had both fitting heads in my hands today they are actually the exact same.

The satin finish on the Gen3 is NIIICEE.

Ah lads, just found a reasonably video to share, jumping to conclusions based on a few hard to compare images from it is unexpected. To me at least top line looks about the same leaning to larger. As expected pretty much. Imperceptible if holding one not the other I’d imagine.
