The Major Shaft Shortage Of 2021 (True Temper)

Recommended Posts

This topic is pretty common in the golf world and like most consumers we just want the truth. For example if you we’re looking for some True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue shafts some companies are saying end of summer. Hope some folks from True Temper can chime in and let’s us know what’s going on and give us some solid information on this topic.

Same with Accra's, everyone is blaming Covid for everything now. Could be true to some point though with all the shutdowns but I don't see why they couldn't catch up rather quickly.

Things have been really opening up lately including businesses.  With less restrictions overall, manufacturing and retail industries should soon be up to speed.  The demand for all things golf have gone up exponentially.  People go stir crazy and golf was one of the very few things people could do from early on, outdoors.  That's why there are so many new golfers now.

Let me help. There is a finite amount of container ships in the world. Since COVID, we have ALL started consuming more products in general, especially with Amazon and Apple. Since there are only so many container ships in the world, the companies that buy the most products, get first rights to container ships. The golf equipment world has changed and more people are playing AND buying more clubs than ever before. Since container ships take a very long time to build, we are still dealing with the same finite amount that we were before COVID.

This is the actual reason. It's really this simple.

This is a valid point, except that True Temper manufactures DG shafts in the USA, so there is no waiting on shipping from overseas.  They are made from American steel in an American factory by American workers.

If that's the case then there's probably too much demand for TT shafts atm and they can't pump out shafts fast enough.

I’m guessing steel prices probably have something to do with it.

Maybe, but I figure TT would just jack up the prices and pass the cost on to the customer like they have in the past.  DG were only $10 each 20 years ago.  Now they are about $24, not to mention the TI pricing.  But that is still in line with any other premium steel shaft.

Steel prices are up 150% in the last twelve months.  They also sell most of their shafts to oems.  They aren’t going to pay double.

I am guessing all  current production goes straight to OEMs.

But the % of  TT shafts in  current clubs way down over the  years.

I noticed many years ago the % of  Nippon and KBS  rising from almost 100%  DG R300 S300

Isn't this the case for almost all shaft manufacturers?  I know the heavier MMT shafts, some of the KBS and Nippon shafts are also back ordered atm.

It likely won't improve until the fall.  There is a small period where demand drops in a normal cycle.  The problem is that they are so far behind in production, that as soon as they deliver a shipment, it is immediately consumed and they still don't have enough.  By the time the next shipment arrives, they are just as far behind or worse.  The cycle will continue since places like TT can only produce so much and even if they made plans to ramp up production, it might be years for that to come to fruition.

Yep. I had a Cleveland wedge that was delayed because of stock shortage on Nippon shafts.

Those are made overseas, so affected by Long Beach and LA ports being a chokepoint.

And the problem is due to containers, not container ships. US manufacturing for export is not up to speed, so import containers are not being turned around with exports and are taking up space at the west coast ports. Inbound containers are sitting on ships off shore. The supply chain problem is a cascade, not a single problem. The ports and customs have slowed down a lot.

When will you get shafts? I'm sure you'll get shafted when it comes to prices.

In the case of TT, they may have prioritized steel output (they own a steel mill) for TT building material products (shovels, etc., all kinds of steel construction equipment), owned by the same parent company as TT sports, combined with record OEM golf sales.

So, MCA, KBS and Nippon shafts all come from overseas and the ports are backed up so that's the cause of delays, whereas since TT is domestic.  They're behind because of the massive demand is what I'm getting.

Blame low stock on hand and JIT supply chain management. COVID was an excuse, but now we can trace most issues back to those two things.

Hey guys and gals-

Like all other industries we have been hit by unprecedented demand, raw material delays (steel, decals, chemicals, graphite.....) and labor shortages.  And even when we have all the materials and labor in place there is a limit to how much capacity our Mississippi factory has.  We are currently running almost 24/7 in an effort to catch up and have doubled our workforce and daily output over the last 6 months.

All that to say the pinch is going to last a while longer but we are doing everything we can to catch up as quickly as we can.

DB

PS- Don't worry about us diverting steel to shovels and wheel barrows.  Same name, different company all together.  I have to pay full price for a True Temper rake just like everyone else.

Thanks for the reply..when’s Callaway getting DG TI X100’s in?

When Titleist getting DG TI S400’s in?

Supply / Demand....  heard it a million times in every industry, but it’s very simple.  Looking beyond to obvious, it boils down to labor.  There is a massive shortage across all industries for labor.

Companies can’t pay people enough to work. Workers have been deincentivized via stimulus programs.

Most folks fail to understand the interconnectedness of supply chains. For example a big reason that composite wood materials are in short supply and exponentially more expensive is because of the Texas winter storm. How could that be?  A resin factory lost power, resins hardened and when power came back the entire line had to be chiseled out from beginning to end before production could resume.  How this applies to steel shafts is outside my scope. But I am guessing that chemicals from overseas, offputs of domestic manufacturing process or some other input impacted TT at some point. Labor is a big factor too, but it is rarely one dimensional.

  • 3 weeks later...

Has anyone heard of any more updates in the last few weeks? Specifically the TT Project X (6.5)? The irons I’ve been trying to buy are finally back in stock, but no option for PX currently so I’m afraid they’ll sell out of the irons again before the PX is available :(

I’m fine waiting months, but I would love to just get the order in so I don’t have to check the oem site almost daily.

Just place an order with an authorized retailer then.  They have the ability to ask for shafts that are backordered and you can't order directly yourself.
