Which hole is this?  (I am not up on my MVGC holes.)  If this is a green (and I am educated guessing yes since there is a bunker right there) then this thing seems super narrow and demanding to hit.  Water on one side and deep bunker on the other.  You go in the bunker you risk going in the water with your next shot.

That's the 14th.

My favourite hole on the course. Love short par fours where you can run up a disaster... but there's a birdie there if you hit a good wedge shot.

Pin up the back of the green, if you miss it right it's water... miss it left and it's a murderous chip shot. But it's only a wedge.

When the pin is up the front I like to see them move the tee up and make it driveable. Hit a good drive and there's a nice little area to land it and run up on to the green and give yourself an eagle chance. Miss right, water. Left, murderous chip shot.

That's #14, tee is in upper left of picture. What a great hole it is!

I saw Brandt Snedeker was 6th alternate, why is he so low on the priory ranking? I see guys like Jamie lovemark, henrik norlander, and Brandon hagy ahead of him. I know those guys have never won.

The Memorial appears to NOT use the PGA Tour Priority Rankings:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Tournament#Field

Doesn't look to match any of the criteria, and since he's an alternate, it's safe to assume he didn't get one of the unrestricted sponsor's exemptions.

RE: #14

How wide is that green?  Those pieces of plywood don't appear to be 4x8, maybe 3x6.  If that is the case that green is around 42 foot wide.  If the sod is 24" wide it is only 28 foot wide.  I counted 14 widths of sod across there.

What is the play there for most mortals?  Drive to a spot on the far left of the fairway (while flirting with creek) to play down the green?  Best place to miss is maybe long left?

I never was a fan of no collar on greens.

I like the before better on:

Number 1, maybe hole 5 (not sure why they pushed the green away from the water and added a bunker when they did the opposite on 3),

I like the look of number 10 before but think the after will play better.  Plus there was a tree removed that blocked the fairway bunker left so that is a plus as well.

I like 15 much better with the after.  Visually better looking and probably plays better for membership too.  Less or not blind off the tee.  I am not crazy about the fairway bunkers, don't think they are needed, but visually it frames the hole well and gives you something to balance the creek on the left.

18 I can't tell a difference and that makes sense given it was internal green contouring changes.

4th is a missed opportunity at a nice redan for the members.  The land sets up so nicely to build one there but the green they built won't play that way, not that it would play as one for the pros at only 200 yards.

Too many holes with greens angling front left to back right against water for my tastes.  Watching the vid it seemed like there were at least 3 holes that were that design.  That doesn't include the converse playing front right to back left with the same fronting water.

Iron to the fairway to leave a wedge to the green is the play for most. Long is not great, though I don't know what speed/firmness they have the greens when the tour isn't there. They moved the tees up last year and guys were going for it which seemed crazy with how narrow it is. Tiger has some famous shots on that hole:

I believe the Memorial is operated as an invitational-type tournament, so they are able to set their own perameters with regards to qualifications.  The Memorial seems to always focus on getting as many winners as possible into their fields, try to get some international flavor, etc.  I believe they cap the exemptions on the FedEx Cup points list to top 70, then fill the field out from there if they need to.   I think they have more sponsors exemptions in this tournament than any other as well.  Situated so close to the US Open qualifications next week, its easy for them to get a strong international field.

Also, winning the Memorial gets you more perks than a regular Tour event, like more FedEx Cup points and one step below the majors with regards to the priority list for Tour events.  So if a Euro player or some other non-Tour member picks up a win here, its a life-changing win (David Lingmerth, for example).

It certainly is an event where Jack's fingerprints are on it from top to bottom.

I love when jack enshrines someone into his memorial “hall of fame”

miller was obviously my favorite year…especially when jack walked up after the tribute and said “wow, Johnny…I never realized how much you copied my swing”….lol

Correct. Same as the Genesis at Riviera, Arnie's Invitational at Bay Hill, RBC Heritage and the Colonial last week. They all have different qualifying criteria. The Colonial and RBC do not have all of the additional winners perks as the Genesis, API and Memorial do. (Extra FEC points, 3 year tour exemption, etc.)

scores don't appear to be reflecting course changes....leaders at -4 after nine holes...must be throwing darts after the rains from the previous day

Jack himself said he expected the course to actually play easier this year with regards to scoring.  He and the superintendent have decided to really take it easy with regards to stressing the course since the new grass has just taken hold.

It is impressive, but a year is a long time. Plus they have the budget and the crew plus contractors to move that much dirt etc. In this industry a lot can be done with the necessary finances.

our club is doing a similar reno ....over 3 years

would be great to have a virtually unlimited budget !
