After at least a six week absence I got to finally play my favorite local golf course. Mike was told to bring up another Lindsay Land dweller/decent golfer and join Stan and myself for a 2:45 tee time.

 

78* with partly cloudy skies. Yes none of that 90 degree Spartanburg County, SC nonsense for this round ,no sir, plus the mountain breezes that often greet you when you play CCA were present.

Mike brought up a buddy that I hadn't played with in over a year. George is an excellent player who kills the ball and also has a solid short game. Big man that George is at 6' 4". The 30 year old baby in the group was a +1 handicap. He played from our tees and hit it to inside 40-60 yards on many par 4's. I had him tip it out though on the par 5's. Mizuno blades with a tiny worn spot dead center on their club face's wielding player this George is, P3P knows the type.  His Sim 2 driver went 310 yards. George looked to me for the breakdown on how to play these holes from our tees with his length. When I got to play with George a couple of times down in Tryon it was as if I was playing with a Tour player as he has the same graces on the course as one who made his living inside the ropes. Because he is such a great player, I was most curious to see how George would handle the track his first time out, Mike too. 

I was the last to arrive and Stan grabbed me in our golf cart in the parking lot. I asked was Mike at the range and he said no, that Mike had told him he didn't need any range time. Truth! I have never seen him hit a ball on the range at Tryon either. He plays multiple times a week but doesn't bang balls. Since I was both anxious to get the round started and the fact that my swing was fairly sound the day before I said screw the range, just let me roll a few and then let's get this battle on you Massachusetts hockey playing  f*@k !  I was really pumped for this round. I so missed this place. I have been fortunate to play the course a bunch and now possess a comfort level at times that allows me to attack some holes. I lacked that ability 2 years ago when I first started to play the historic old Donald Ross gem.  

 

I always have my best rounds when my entire day with driver is a confident point and shoot affair.

 

After the short downhill par four first and then the skinny par 5 second we all were even. After all getting fairways and greens to start out I wondered who might have the first blip. Number 3 is a downhill par 3 that played 168 yards. The others all hit to the middle of the green. I hit last and went pin hunting full well knowing it was a sucker pin on the back left shelf. Had to gamble because my swing felt grooved early and that is a rare occurrence for me. I carried my 7 iron 2 yards too far and my shot bounded down a bank. I failed to make the save and claimed the first bogey in the group. On the number 1 cap 4th's fairway where Stan and I are getting ready for our approach shots I tell him that this is going to be a very good round for me if I can stay with it all afternoon. He asked why? I said because I have not felt this pure of a swing in a long time and it's been with me all through the opening holes. I told him also that I needed of course the putter to cooperate. Stan said he too was feeling confident with ball striking early. I believe our early signs of confidence were just another example of playing up to the groups ability. This is such a fun phenomenon to experience. After 5 they all remained even and then there was me and my bogey back on the par 3. Number six is also a par 3. It is very short. It has a very well protected green with deep Donald Ross bunkers all around the green. It played 108. After two others put their's in the middle of the green it was my turn. I pulled P wedge for the number and knew just what swing this yardage called for because I spend time at the range often 😉 an  I knocked it inside a foot. Birdie one and now I was back to even. On 7 tee Mr. plus cap was 2 under, and the other three were all at even. Then Mike made two birdies in a row, and Stan made one, and George and I made pars. Number 9 (first photo) has a crazy uphill approach shot to the most complained about green on the course (it has a deep pit in the middle of it). I hit one pure laser 6 iron to inside 10 feet with the pin on the back edge above the deep pit. That was the best iron of the day for me so far by a large margin. I lipped out the birdie bid, but nobody in the group besides me made par to finish the front.

 

At the turn we had George with a 34, Mike with a 35, LP with an even 36, and our host one over with 37. The front nine is quite a bit easier than the back at CCA. The back 9 on this golf course (pics 2,3,4,5,and 6 ) is one of the more special golfing spots I play.

I am the only one that hit 3 wood on 10. I always do to take the creek completely out of play even though that choice is going to leave me 190 in. I was the only one who made par. The others except George doubled.

 

I will not continue on with a hole by hole breakdown of the action on the back in long winded fashion but instead make an attempt to cut short my recap with a summary of the play holes 10 through 18. 

Well no. 1 /our host got a bit sideways on a few holes while George got some more birdies as in 3. Mike lost his game for a spell and bogey'd a bunch. Me? Well the driver kept me in the short grass consistently and my irons were on enough that I hit a bunch of greens. And the final piece was my putter did end up cooperating. I shot 3 over on the back while playing some of my absolute favorite Asheville golf holes. That was a memorable round.

 I felt it on the 4th fairway. I knew I had a solid swing that could hold up.  CCA has provided me with some of my best golf memories over the last couple of years. I am fortunate to play it a bunch.

At the end of that fine September day in the western North Carolina mountains the results were.

Both Mike and George were rather taken by the beauty of CCA in that mountainous valley. It was a first round at a course the two of them will always remember. 

 

 

yesterday I gobbled up some home field advantage.   😅

 

I drove on home with possibly my biggest golfer smile of the season.

I cannot figure out which Senator to whom you are referring to.

As I see this photo on my computer rather than my phone, does anyone else see a Touch resemblance to Barry Melrose?  Or maybe Brett Hull?  I can't decide, but I do know I have never seen Touch and Barry or Touch and Brett at the same time.
