Where does Europe go from here

This/Last years Ryder Cup was a real eye opener from the blue and gold. After the thumping we gave the American's in Paris we did carry the momentum and the US just didn't like the European course set up and throughout the year there were cracks in the US dressing room with Bryson/Brooks and Reed not being picked (Which was a good thing). Now imo the teams have completely flip flopped. The US team was extremely strong both on paper and on the course and Europe just couldn't keep up off the Tee or importantly on the greens. Stricker had planned everything right from the start and the course to be fair was a challenge for all. I agree with some other posters stating that the US do have much more younger talent coming through the ranks with amazing college system while the European's don't have any young players coming through.

What hinders the European's is the lack of pathways for the junior/ younger players to develop into world class golfers, for example one of the main paths through Europe is Europro, Challenge and then European Tour and the lack of Team events hurt us.

Now there is still a bright light with the core players Rory, Tommy, Victor, Rhambo, Hatton are going to be around for a few more years, but sadly if young players don't start coming through then I believe the RC might just become another Presidents Cup which would kill the RC which is possible. Roll on 2022/23.

Higgo and Bezuidenhout would be a surprise.

LOL, Higgo and Bezuidenhot are south african. I'm no expert but they might have a difficult time making the European squad.

I think there is a talent gap right now and was completely wrong on how this would go. The US team is young and stacked.

The Euro stalwarts are all older now. Westwood, Poulter, Garcia, Stenson, Molinari, Rose etc are all just about done.

I think the main hope will be that 3 of the top 5 amateurs on the planet right now are European. If the team gets really lucky maybe 1-2 of them makes a Morikawa type rise onto the team in the next 2-4 years.

Alex Fitzpatrick (Matt's younger brother), Ludvig Aberg and David Currius are all top flight younger players who could represent some hope for Europe in the near future.

In Europe, Golf is competing with Soccer, Rugby and Tennis (just to name a few), all promising young athletes would rather play something else. I can't see how we could compete with the talent coming from the US, with its well established College system and a very attractive PGA Tour.

Football, baseball, basketball to name a few in the US.

Agreed, you do have a few appealing sports as well, however the prospects of a golf career in Europe aren't so glam, except maybe in the UK.

In France for instance, we have very very few juniors programs, Golf is still very elitist and unaffordable, there is no chance we'll ever get the talent pool you guys have. All the kids here are about soccer, rugby, handball, you name it... any sport is cheaper than Golf. Marseille, 2nd city in France has one golf course... and a few more in the surroundings but it's nowhere near as available as in the US.

There's always a new influx of talent coming in, they just caught the US in the perfect storm....the US team was very good, the US team was a better fit for Foursomes than they have been in quite sometime, Whistling Straits fit the US style of play much more strongly than other RC courses in the past and the Europe team was in a slump.

They may not get it back in 2023, but sooner or later they'll be strong again.

  • 1 year later...

Hovland does not like the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.

https://www.eurosport.com/golf/ryder-cup/2023/viktor-hovland-critical-of-ryder-cup-venue-says-he-s-not-a-fan-of-marco-simone-golf-and-country-club_sto9286057/story.shtml

“It is a bit disappointing, I must say,” Hovland said. “I'm not a fan of the design of the track itself.”

“It is up and down a large mountain, so it will be difficult to walk,” Hovland said. “Honestly, I think people will struggle to play 36 holes, and especially the caddies.”

There has been few really top notch prodigies emerging in Europe later years. Rahm has been around for a while now as have Matt Fitzpatrick.

From scandinavia We’ve seen Hovland and the Höjgård twins and Ludvig Åberg has been in the upper region of the wagr long time now. Most surprisingly British and Irish talents have been rather sparse in emerging later years.
