Where does Europe go from here

amish

Europe will be just fine (strictly talking golf).  The team looked in fine spirits as they knew it would be a tall order to win, but they are pros and gave it a go.  In a way it was the send off for the elder statesman.

Change it up to match US strategy of 6 captain's picks, get some fearless rookies on the team and see what happens.

Teams have to go through transition.  We all have seen how long it took the US to get there young guns in the at the right time.  Who's to say Europe won't have some firepower in two years?  Lots of talented and hungry golfers everywhere.

I’ve a feeling the Euros will find a way.
As mentioned Willett, Rose, Noren, Molinari, Stenson. Cam Smith in that list.
The Cup has an ebb and flow to it. It was America’s time.

The Euros have a long memory.

Cam Smith is Australian. Willett is a shell of his former self and played horribly in 2016. Rose and Stenson are has beens by 2023. Heck, Stenson has already graduated to vice captaincy. Molinari is old and inconsistent. Noren could play in 2023, but he’s as good as the weakest young American.

I think personally the European team should be relatively fine when the Cup is played in Europe. I agree the US team will be favourite in years to come but that was the case since 1999 based on individual players.

It is unfortunate that this season that most of the ET players were playing average to poor going to Whistling Straits. The ET since Covid-19 has lost a lot of established events and tour seems weaker.

McIlroy, Hovland, Hatton, Lowry and Fitzpatrick are all still young enough to find their games again, whilst Rahm is a machine.

Europe has always required their lower ranked players to do well. If people remember, players like Gilford, Price, McGinley, Levet and Walton over performing to earn crucial points.

End of the day its just the cyclical trend of sports.

Sat here in Scotland, please tell me more about golf being a country club game? 😂

Really not in Ireland either…

But there is some truth to it in continental Europe sadly, I know a lot of French people and none of them like or know about golf and none could tell you the Ryder Cup was even on in 2018. That’s how unaware they are of it. And France would potentially be a fertile land for players (still some good European Tour pros) but the interest simply isn’t there. In fact there’s a general disdain from it for a lot of people that consider it that country club thing that goes against what they think of France.

Ditto a lot of Western Europe. Eastern Europe it’s a dot in the ocean is golf, maybe 1 or 2 courses in entire countries, only played by the elite of those countries.

If only we could import more of Irish and Scottish style and attitude to golf to the rest of the continent.

Europe just going through a lull in talent .. looking at the OWGR, you could pick a USA B-Team and a Rest of the World Team that both have better average rankings than we were able to field at Whistling Straits. It will come again ... hopefully the likes of Perez, MacIntyre, Migliozzi, Wallace and the Hojgaard twins can kick on to the next level ... and McIlroy, Hatton, Fleetwood, Lowry, Rose, Noren etc arrest their current slide down the rankings ...

Whilst qualifying means that we can’t guarantee a major clear out of the guys the guys that effectively form the pool to select from, the focus really needs to move on from the Dad’s Army who have, give or take, formed the Vanguard of the Team for the past decade:-

Westwood

Poulter

Casey

Stenson

Rose

Garcia

Molinari

The next decade needs to be about Rahm, Hovland, McIlory (hopefully with a chip on his shoulder) and then the likes of Fleetwood, Lowry and Hatton realising that there time is becoming finite and pulling the finger out to gain some consistency.

Then it’s rookies. At the moment, the pool doesn’t look amazing but after the last Ryder Cup, Hovland was barely a blip on the radar and now he is one of our best players. The Hojgaard’s have potential, MacIntyre a good mix of chippy and talented.

Add in some mid-career guys whose trajectory really looked like it was going to be better - talking about you Matt Wallace and Thomas Pieters - hopefully getting out of the troughs they have fallen into and hopefully we might at least be more competitive but if the US team stays as strong as it, being competitive is all that we can hope for.

Such a shame Thomas Pieters has disappeared from the upper elechons of the European players ... we could have done with his 2016 performance at Whistling Straits !

Really thought we had something special for a decade after his RC debut at Hazeltine.

Oh and we also instigate the Fitzpatrick rule. One that prevents him from qualifying or being picked. Ever!

Just can’t quite figure out what happened to him. To go from Rory saying that he would play with him in every Ryder Cup ever going forward to two T9’s being his best performances all year is quite the backwards step with the ability that he seems to have.

The principle is sound, albeit he only played twice on his RC debut, so is only 0-5-0 🙂

He needs to grow a beard or something, or drink a lot of beer to fatten himself up a bit ... he looked like a frigging Junior out there LOL ... and take the bloody pin out Matt !!!

The only thing we need to look at is the qualifying, the fact Westwood and Fitzpatrick still scraped through automatically despite being dreadful for the past 3 or 4 months needs sorting, cant see the harm in doing what the US does and only have 6 auto's

But even if that was the case we still would have got mullered, the better players playing great golf is going to get it done no matter what happens, thats golf, 2 years is a long time so could be all change in Rome

Fitzpatrick is one that we discussed whilst we were playing yesterday morning. I couldn’t for the life of me remembering him doing anything noteworthy over the season. Genuinely surprised myself that I had forgotten him finishing 2nd after losing a playoff at the Scottish Open.

Picks wise, Harrington tied at least one of his hands behind his back by sticking with 3.

Also because 19 seems an armageddon, but we won 17,5 point in Paris and we could have easily gotten 1,5 points more with a little more help from Rory ad Casey... So I think we are in the same situation as US in 2018: bad week, need to change the squad.

They'll be fine. Home Ryder Cups are a different animal.

Play on a course with some meaningful rough & trees.

Cut the fairways to a sensible width.

Don't put the pins in bowls where average shots feed to inside 10 feet.

So, make it a ballstriking exhibition...and that would have helped Europe how?

The US team was loaded with ballstrikers.

Stop what, you started with the unintelligent BS. Quite rudely I might add.

I would contend it's not that far fetched. You have the number 1 player in the world and one of the best ever Ryder cup players of all time. Both with good  form. You're outgunned and an underdog. Playing them together nets you at best one point per session. Separating them gives you a chance at two points per session. Each have the ability to carry a pairing, especially Rahmbo. Getting two points is better than one. Ya know, basic math? It's stupid not to consider it.

So you can stop unless you have a better idea how to maximize points from the two players carrying your team. I thought so...shut up.

Yep, it’s only math putting winning teams together. 🙁

Tiger can win with anyone as well -  except he can’t.
