Largest group you've ever played in?

I played in a charity 3 man scramble event with 2 threesomes in each group.  Doesn't sound that bad except that there were only two carts allowed per 6 players many of whom were not golfers but seemed to be excellent drinkers.  It was a long 5+ hours.  A friend of mine teed off an hour and a half after us and he was out there for 7 hours plus.

5-somes were fairly common at the munis I used to play down south. I can handle 5, but don't like it.

The biggest group I've ever tried to actually play in (against my will) was 7. It lasted about 3 holes.

There were just waaaaaay too many balls and players to keep track of. It hurt both my sensibility and my head.

"I can handle 5, but don't like it" was the name of the adult film i starred in while in college.

Like a few others---I've played in some 6-somes, often as part of a 2 team (of 3s) playing in like a vegas or something for money, so the other team is needed to verify score

I play in 5-somes semi-regularly.  The retired guys at my club, playing weekday mornings, will play up to 7 in a group, and do that in about 4:30, but its really distracting  to me.  The good part, they're all mostly deaf, so nobody cares if carts are starting up in their backswings.

Played about 16-some on an executive par three during a golf trip to Orange County National. Late in the day, played a quick closest to the pin money game with closest to the pin having to verify with birdie or par to collect the win. Played about 9 holes in 1.5 hours, with significant drinking.

Course had no issues, as we were pretty much waiting on the group in front of use most of the time... and course was not crowded.

8 some in a big money scramble. Each team kept the score for the other team.

Never played a full round with more than 5. Although I'm a member at a private club so if it was a slow day and we wanted to try and play with 20 I doubt anyone would care as long as we didn't hold anyone up.

A few weeks back it got so slow on a Saturday morning during our normal weekend game that we played the final 3 holes as an 8some. We had been waiting on every tee alongside the group in front of us for about 5 holes at that point and just said "F it". The crazy part was that even as an 8some we still had to wait on every shot coming in...

5 in a full round...but a group of us used to do a Thursday eve 9 hole event every week (btw 8-16 guys & incl 1 or 2 of the Asst Pros used to join in) - we played as 4's for the 9 holes...but as darkness was falling we routinely continued and played our holes 10 & 11 (out & back to the clubhouse) as an 8-12"some". To break ties, or sometimes we just throw extra skin money in...I can remember a great streak I had where I birdied 9 to win a bunch of $$$(in near darkness), then birdied 10, and then on 11 (in complete darkness) the maint staff had already removed the pin...1 guy said "oh it was left, slightly back" so I hit a completely blind shot (~6-7 iron) and got up there and it was 4'!

Won a bunch of extra $$$ that day 😀

Played in an charity outing (mostly amateurs but lots of occasional golfers) this year where they had groups of 8 go off on each tee. It resulted in 6+ hour rounds and was the worst experience I have ever had on a course.

The key is, when they do the 8-somes (assume 2 scramble groups so they score each other), is you still have to keep the same max numbers. You can't jam extra groups in like they are normal 4-somes.

But of course, if its a charity the main purpose is to raise $$, so you can't really complain about the pace.

I played in a club member-member once. I am not sure how many teams there were, but our MGA at the time had around 700 members. At the end of the event (2 rounds) there were 7 teams tied. So we teed off as a 'fourteensome' playing alternate shot (sudden death) - so there were only 7 balls in play.

It was a long time ago but IIRC it ended on the 4th hole (we were out on the first).
