I tip everyone, profusely, everywhere. Have a lot of money now, but when I was younger, worked a lot of grunt, hard labor jobs to put myself through school. Know what it means to choose between ramen noodles and paying the power bill in winter.

I do it because it is right - every maid in every hotel, every waitress in my favorite restaurants, everyone on my favorite courses.

Don't do it to get anything - but the aftereffect is that it does. Increasingly, establishments keep track of this. They record it. There's hotels that automatically upgrade me. Restaurants that will give me last minute reservations when they are telling everyone else they are booked.

I don't want to meet a bare minimum of what everyone else does, I want to make people feel like they are appreciated, lavished (because I genuinely do appreciate them). And I get lavished back.

I'm never going to comment on whether I have a little or a lot of money, lol, but people should tip as they feel is appropriate.  I've never tipped a maid in a hotel in my life, never will, never left anything unusual or weird in my wake that would make their job they get paid to do more difficult, in fact, we generally request no maid service if we are staying more than one night and have for years - don't want anyone in and out of the room.  Definitely you can spread money around and get things in return, whatever says "value" to you is what you should do.  I tip for the things I tip for and I hope appropriately under each circumstance and not a "piker", haha, but it's not something I keep a mental inventory about.

But, if money is your measuring stick for how you feel people are responding to you or encouraging those responses, that's pretty short-sighted, IMO. Don't always get what you pay for, and don't have to pay to get a lot of value in this life from human interaction.

Mission:  Define a humble-brag.

See above.

Mission Accomplished.

Congratulations 007.

Anyone else here watch "Billions" on Showtime?

The humble brag is his MO.

I've seen him post about his multiple homes and often talks about the success of his international career and travels.

I noticed he deleted a detailed response/reply to you....lol.

I think businesses should pay their employees an honest wage to begin with and not leave the financial well being of their employees to the random generosity of customers. Think about it, if a waitress gets Mr. Pink as a customer she gets nothing. If she gets Bob Foster she can fund a vacation to Aruba.

I do tip when culturally expected though because I don't want to be viewed as the a-hole (even though it's employers who are taking advantage of this scheme). That said, I don't eat at any exclusive restaurants so there would be no payoff for heavy tipping habits in getting a reservation when no one else can.  🙂

I love America but I much prefer the European view on tipping.

We have a fund that all members kick whatever they want into

usually it’s 30 grand and the men’s committee divides it up amongst the staff

Myself and our crew of ~16 also take care of the pro directly.   Haven’t needed to make a tee time in 20 years … just saying

I’m like Hawkeye, have never left a tip for a hotel maid. Really had never heard of it being done until the last few years. But we too always request no service if we’re staying multiple nights. Really prefer no one to be in our room.

We didn’t have starters or bag guys or locker room attendants (smaller midwestern club, pretty casual)One of the pros usually took care of grabbing a bag for someone out of the storage room. We had a few part time high school kids around, but it was more likely you’d only see them once or twice a season. I usually contributed to the yearly employee pool, but instead of cash for the pros, being I was in the car business, I always took care of their vehicle needs. Whether it was an actual vehicle purchase, repair work, or a loaner for something they needed. They took good care of me, but I figure I took pretty good care of them as well.

I miss the place.

Me too.   I have an issue with tipping somebody that I've never seen.

Same. I don't tip hotel housekeeping. I keep the "do not disturb/no housekeeping" sign on the door for the entire length of my stay. And I usually don't leave a mess in hotel rooms that requires them to do anything out of the ordinary to get it ready for the next guest. I leave the used towels in a heap on the bathroom floor, put my trash in the cans, and don't move the furniture around or anything.
