Driving iron with most forgiveness?

Rodder

Recommended Posts

I know the title may sound like a bit of an oxymoron but I'm looking for suggestions on a larger and chunkier DI for a tee club. The courses in my area are pretty short making driver pretty useless off the tee most of the time. As much as I've tried I've never been a fan of hybrids or fairway woods.  I'm a 16hc but my irons are the best part of my game and am currently gaming P790's with the 3i acting as my current tee club. Swing speed is 101 with the 3i so I have the speed for a DI but would rather look at something more in line with my P790's than a blade.

If I wasn't a lefty I would probably pick up the P790 2i and call it a day but that's unfortunately not an option. I would love to try a few different clubs out but there's not much in stock within an hour of me even if I go the fitting route. At this time the G425 seems to fit my requirements but I'd like to hear of any other options if they're out there.

If you want forgiveness from a driving iron, maybe you should try a hybrid?

I was after a similar beast.

The early favorite was the SIM DHY.

I tried one on the simulator at my friendly local dealer and hit it pretty well off the tee.

Then, on a whim, I tried the Cleveland XL Halo 4 iron i spied in a corner (20* loft).

It has less offset than the DHY and most other driving irons.

I hit it 10 yards longer, noticeably higher and more consistently.

And it only costs $120 or so.

It's ugly, but it works.

I picked up an Adams DHY in 18* and so far it has worked better than the GAPR Lol and Mis I had. I should have kept the GAPR Lol, but I honestly don't miss it.

I will be getting a Haywood driving iron shortly for fun.

If you feel like the P790 3i is forgiving enough, but you need more distance/lower launch/whatever else, you could bend it 1 or 2 degrees stronger. You can even go as far as putting a graphite shaft it in very easily. That will basically turn it into a left handed P790 2 UDI. Ventus HB, Project X Smoke Black, Graphite design....lots of options to chose from and would blend into your set like you are wanting. You are already familiar with it and would be cheaper (depending on the shaft you install in it)

Being a a little steep at impact limits me to not being able to hit some of the more desirable offerings out there like a UDI, Zx or the U505/10. The Srixon/Cleveland V-sole is my savior so I've gone for the Srixon Zx-4 and put an accra tz5 95g in there and it works phenomenally. I also have an cleveland UhX 3 iron that is 18* and have a tour ad di 95g shaft in it... it's not a pretty club, but it's silly easy to hit and has great feel. The v-sole on both allow me to hit them off the deck nicely when needed. I swap them out depending on wether I havr a 3 hybrid in the bag at the time or not. If you're steep at impact, these are both worth a good look.

As a lefty:

one of the original ping crossovers

tm gapr mid or tm dhy

(i have an old OG crossover 3 in LH if you’re interested or you can probably find them for cheap on the bay.)

I was going to say Ping Crossover for sure but can be fugly.  699 Pro I have in a 4i with a Evenflow 80g and love it.

Flies super high and I am considering a whole set.  But have some D7 Forged coming I want to try first.

MC18 Flihi's was my favorite and could elevate a 2i even with a KBS Tour.  I am NOT a high baller so this was awesome for me and I am considering trying it again.  But love 5w and 7w as well as hybrids.

- Something that continues to go long off the tee in the fairway
- Something that is a fairway finder when needed and long
- Something that high, consistent and helps with par 5’s
-  Something to help with long par3’s and short par 4’s

-  Something metal, lots of them and go the gaps I need
- Something metal, 2x of them and helps me 120y and in
- Putters - limited rotation because I cannot afford misses

Golf is what you make of it.  Play grateful and accepting. We are all lucky to have it.

Rather than expecting lets all try and appreciate instead.
Treat people the way you want to be treated

There is. I'm current gaming a 20* version vent to 19*, had the OEM Recoil shaft that I swapped out for an F5 version, then reshafted with an x100, and will be reshafting with a Ventus HB 10TX once that shaft comes in. Already a sniper off the team, hoping to get a bit more of a penetrating ball flight with the Ventus. Highly recommend.

Love my Srixon ZX utility 4 iron. You have to hit them before making any decision. I would say all clubs nowadays are really good with unique feel and technology but only 1 club will perform better than the rest in your hand. Only way to find out is to try them with launch monitor 😉

Titleist U505, designed for 8-18 handicap.  The only other forgiving club that I know of is Titleist 718 T-MB 17' blade which is no longer in production.  I have been using it since introduction.  It's probably my favorite club.  I still play 6200yds using it, and leave driver and 4wd in the bag.
