I would like it if he put effort into clean designs again.  The cherry bombs and huge fonts are a major turnoff.  Was planning on buying this year’s release until I saw the busy styling.

Same! I actually love 2020 special select line…currently rolling a NP2 with a midsize iomic grip, and the feel off the face is much more responsive than the new double milled 2023 lineup

If this was already talked about in this thread I missed it, but how do people feel about the new textured stock grip? I haven't had a chance to try it in person.

Love it. Doesn't get slick like the last one.

I wasn't going to try and snag one of these but I changed my mind and will try and get the 2.5+. Will definitely change that sight line to white though.

There is something about a slant neck just helps me setup to the ball without the toe being up in the air.

I just read this entire thread. Funny how back in March and April nothing but bashing Scotty's 2023 releases (before anyone hit them), and then that transitions to lots of people actually loving these after giving them a try. You can include me in this group.🙂 I am no Scotty fan boy, in fact the last Scotty I owned was a Catalina back in 1997. I loved that putter, but sold it to fund my wife's engagement ring. 😢 I haven't owned one since.

So here we are 26 years later, and I've gamed just about everything except Scotty's, mainly because of the stigma attached and wanting to find my own favorite that was not so mainstream, I didn't want to follow the herd. The last few years that has included many different styles and brands; mallets, double wides, blades, putters with and without inserts and 5-6 Bettinardi's that I loved the look of but truth be told, did not perform that well for me (although I still love the looks of them the best). I briefly gamed the Ping PLD Anser but it felt very unforgiving to me. I really wanted to like the Ping PLD Tyne 4 (which I gamed for a year), but alas have given up on fangs, mallets or anything spaceship looking. They feel nicely balanced but I never have a feeling of finesse or good distance control with them, it always feels like the putter is controlling me and not the other way around. I also find practicing with a mallet is dull and boring, practicing with a blade is much more fun so I'm motivated to get out there and spend a lot of time on the practice green. I've accepted the fact that I'm a dinosaur and prefer a traditional blade - but which one?

My two favorite blades thus far have been the Mizuno M-Craft I and the Odyssey Stroke Lab One, but I still wanted something that felt like it could be THE one, something that I wouldn't get tired of and leave me constantly thinking there must be something better out there. I've grown tired of the search and wanted to make a firm commitment, something with fine craftsmanship and staying power, which lead me to giving the Scotty's a try once again, and I'm glad I did.

In the past when I've tried Scotty's in the store, I never really liked them that much. Maybe it was my own personal bias, but the feeling just wasn't there. Perhaps it was the face milling or the balance, I don't know, but none of them felt like they were meant for me. They say the putter chooses you and not the other way around, and none of the Scotty's I've tried since 1997 ever felt like they were for me. That list includes the more recent Special Select version. While many of the SC's I've given a glancing try in the past felt too soft because of the deeper milling, these Special Select's with the mid face milling felt a bit too hard. None of them were in the goldilocks zone of "just right".

Enter the 2023 Super Select. First SC I've tried that felt in that goldilocks zone. The face milling is perfect. The double mill cutting off the peaks of the first deep mill nailed it - perfect feel - not to soft, not too hard and you can see the effects of that double mill clearly on the face. Anyone that says there's little difference between the Special Select models and the Super Select version is flat out wrong IMO - there's a world of difference if you're someone that can appreciate the subtle but yet very noticeable difference between the two.

I bought the 35" Super Select Newport 2. Traditional and pure, yet the length of the blade feels like it's adding some additional MOI which is why I chose it over the Newport. I had it adjusted 2 degrees upright to better fit my upright posture and stroke and am loving this putter, it could be THE one. I initially thought I'd be replacing the grip immediately, but the stock grip has grown on me and I'm liking it.

Sure, the SC names, branding and marketing hype are kind of dumb, (and why no magnetic headcover?) but I'm all about performance and feel, and this putter has that in spades. Distance control and accuracy are spot on, and I'm the one controlling the putter, not the other way around. I'm glad I let go of my bias and gave Scotty another shot. Maybe it's karma since the last Scotty I owned and liked I gave up in 1999 for my wife's wedding ring, I don't know but it was worth the wait.

Don't care that much about the Scotty headcover anyways since I've got this awesome one, but really, why don't they make them magnetic? Bettinardi is still velcro too, perplexing why these high end putters don't come with magnetic which everyone seems to prefer.

Sweet cover ...

You want to know what's worse about Scotty's covers? His mallets now come with the same covers as the blades. I got the Golo 6 ...same cover as you got. Worthless. Never made it to the course or practice green.

That's weird! You sure the guy at the store didn't give you the wrong one? I can't believe they'd try and stuff that into the same blade cover. If that's true... bad on Scotty.

Ya know, that's what I thought, so I when I got home I did some online Sherlocking on the Googles ... Sure enough, all the 2023 mallets come with that cover. Appears there is only 1 Supper Select cover.

Nice writeup. I’m also not a devoted Scotty fan but not for any particular reason, I just didn’t play his putters. But his work is beautiful and it’s hard to keep doing what he does. The Super Select line does feel excellent. Very nice with soft or firmer golf balls. I rolled all the blades and found myself returning to the Newport 2.5-plus. Something about the way it sets up, seems to hug the ground with that hosel, is a look I find appealing.

These are very smooth putters and they look elegant. Feel as stable as a mid mallet to me but I prefer the blades for a weight forward feel. I don’t mind a weighting that enhances MOI, but I don’t want too much of an emphasis on MOI. I want the putter to feel right. These strike a perfect balance.

Has anyone compared the Newport 2+ to the Squareback? I found the Squareback a bit sluggish if that means anything. It rolled nicely but I found that it took my a bit longer to find my pace than with the 5.5 I have.

I have a NP2+ coming in a couple of days and I’m excited for it. My local shop didn’t have any in 34in so I had to order one. I liked the one I saw in person and the shape was a bit more compact.

I felt the same way about Squareback. It is a big block. I just could not go for it standing over the ball. Owned it one week. I like the plus models a lot more. Head size and depth suits me.

Yes I tried both when demoing them, went with the NP2+. Much happier, buddy has a SB and after my purchased tried it again to make sure but I was happy with my decision.

Thinking about getting back into a Scotty. Only one I ever owned was a classic Newport from like 1998 when I was in high school. Man, that thing was beautiful. Not even sure what happened to it. Read this whole thread and am considering between Super or Special Newport. Sounds like Super might be a little softer? Both look gorgeous at address, which is really the only view I care about.

The Super Select line is definitely a softer-feeling putter. I'm not saying the Special Select is clicky but it's a firmer-feeling face. You can tell that the milling is lighter and gives more response off of the face. If you like a responsive putter, Special Select. Softer, go Super. Both are great options and I could game either.

Nice, thanks for the feedback. Got to roll a Super N2 today in the shop. Just a beautiful, classic, great feeling putter. In addition to being torn between Super and Special, I'm also torn between Newport and Newport 2. Probably any of these combinations I would be happy gaming.
