Probably a burner number like Google Voice. Almost 99.9999% of the time, scammers will always have green boxes when texting them from an iphone; no hate on androids but that green box brings up a red flag almost immediately now a days for me.

 

OP, hope to hear your chargebacks go through or at least some portion of it.

What a whirlwind. I agree with OP being too trusting of some folks - I'm the same way. However these types of threads seem to pop up almost weekly on Wrx. Isn't the first, likely won't be the last.

Honestly this whole thread has been exhausting. And to be honest, if you use F&F and get scammed that's on you and Paypal/CC shouldn't refund you. Why should everyone have to pay the fees when people who do stuff like this can just get bailed out. Warnings all over this site and scams are everywhere. Sucks if it happens to you, but hard to have a lot of compassion for something so preventable.

Was the F&F solicited or did you take it upon yourself to send F&F?  Curious cause if it wasn't and you used G&S, you would of had your money back 100%.  Seems maybe this post alerted the prospect seller and he figured now he is keeping your cash since you have no recourse.

You are focusing on one portion of my comment.  I was seeking clarification since it wasn't clear on my end.  I see he sent F&F, but does that unequivocally confirm he was not further solicited to send F&F?  My second portion was; had he not sent F&F, maybe the seller would of acted in good faith.. that's all.  But sure gad you are here to put that curiosity to rest.  Thanks Karen, you've been helpful.

Very fraudulent of the seller to demand more money after the agreed upon price. I would definitely ask for money back and have the administrators have a discussion with the seller. That in itself should not be allowed.

OP said there was PayPal credit involved  but not for entire amount. There is hope they could get something back, maybe not what they had in the PayPal account , but part of it. It’s worth trying and just know better next time.

Yea man. My CC company is issuing a chargeback.  PP support said they can “indirectly investigate” the matter once CC issuer initiates a chargeback.  So working out ok all things considered.

This is very interesting.

 

The seller has collected the money. Your CC company is charging back to PP.

 

So PP is eating the loss ? Maybe they ban the guy's account ? Interesting.

I had a similar-ish situation buying a set of clubs off Marketplace. Downside with G&S isn't the fee. It's that the funds are locked for the seller. Which I can understand is a concern. Especially when disputes are much easier for the buyer when using G&S. So an unsavory buyer could end up with your stuff and their money.

 

My seller kept giving me the run around. First it was shipping issues/costs. Then he was worried I was trying to scam him. Then it was he got in an accident. Which made his pain pill addiction worse. I tried to give him a reasonable benefit of the doubt. But after a week of back and forth nonsense, I simply articulated that I'd be pursuing criminal and/or civil action if he did not refund my money or send the clubs. 

 

At first he responded with something like, "we didn't even have a contract, shut the hell up." To which I replied, I didn't go to law school to provide him with free legal advice. And that he had until the EOW to refund or send my clubs. The next day after his stupid outburst, his attitude mysteriously changed and he sent the clubs. 

The funniest thing about the whole thing was that he sent me a picture of the shipping label (which was genuine). But he'd blurred out his address. The funny part was that the photo he took was one of those motion capture iPhone photos. So when I long pressed on it, the blur went away and his address was clear as day, lol. 

 

Live and learn, OP. Maybe it works out for you too in the end.
