UST Dart V iron shaft

Recommended Posts

Have not seen much buzz around here about a new graphite iron shaft that UST is releasing, Dart V. Looks like they are incorporating high tensile modulus material M40X from Toray. Will be available in 3 weight classes: 90, 105, and 120. They will be .355" taper tip and constant weight. Torque values are very low, especially the 120 gram weight class. (1.5*-1.8*). Right now I see $75 per shaft and release on 5/1.

Could be a good competitor to the Fuji Axiom shaft coming out. If you aren't interested in sanding down the parallel tips on a $125 iron shaft, I might check these out.

I am interested in these.  Just built a set of irons that I’m experimenting with the shafts and if they don’t work out then a set of these would probably be next on the list to try.

There was a thread I started in in the WRX Club Techs forum about the Recoil Prototype iron shafts being discontinued a few months back.  The regular DART shafts were announced, but only with lighter weights.  UST told me at the time that the DART V was coming with heavier weights.  Pretty sure these are a TSPX fitter only shaft, though I'm sure there will be shaft sets available on eBay.

I really want to like graphite shafts. I played steelfibers all last year and had some good rounds. I am just not sure the consistency is there yet.

90 and 105 overlap with regular DART 90 and 105, so what's the diff? Stiffer profile? Lower launching?

Yes to both.  Similar to the regular Recoil and the Recoil Prototype shafts.  The DART V will have significantly lower torque and launch lower.

Any idea of a steel equivalent in terms the launch/spin they're going for in the more traditional steel weight of 120?

I don't have access to EI profiles for these shafts, so it's pretty subjective on my part.  I thought the Recoil Prototype 125 F4 (stiff) played pretty comparable to DG S300/S400, but others disagreed.

  • 2 weeks later...

I spoke to their head of TSPX and the thought behind Dart V was to stiffen up the middle of the Recoil Prototype shaft to give a more one-piece feel as feedback had been that the Recoil Protos felt soft.

Just got fit today for new irons, and wound up with Dart V 120's.  For being a typical WRX'er who is equipment junkie, I have never heard of these.  I stated with X100, $Taper, and then into the Dart's.  I was pretty blown away of how good they felt.  My fitting goal was to gain height and they shinned in that category.  They were the highest, longest and tightest dispersion of all the shafts I tried.  Plus they felt the best and the solid black shaft with black logo looks fantastic.  Ordered them on the spot.  Will report back in 2-3 weeks once they get built.

Could you share some club and ball numbers? Assuming you tried the 130X in the $ taper, would love to hear how they compared specifically

I should get my set of 105 f4 shafts tomorrow. I've been on a large and expensive graphite shaft journey. I like recoil 95s a lot but wish they didn't have the heft I need. I tried the 110s and strangely wasn't a fan. Let's hope the dart v shafts are the answer.

Initial testing is very promising. From a build perspective, the shafts are excellent. All shafts were within 1g. Far superior to my LA golf shafts which are not as impressive in weight quality control.  I built the 6 iron to 37.5" without factoring in the grip cap (my preferred method) and got a d2 SW without any tip weights and 50 gram grip.

The shafts don't feel as tight as my LA L series but seem tighter than the standard 95 recoil. All of that is exactly what I am looking for. My LA series perform well, but seem to take a lot of work to swing.  The Dart V seem to be just right.  I'm not sure if the stiffer mid section or the low torque are the driving factors in these results.  Dart V provided a mid launch with a more linear feel than recoil 95.

I'm currently exploring ways to buy individual shafts as I want to buy a 90 and 120 shaft for testing. Either way I'll be doing some more testing hopefully Thursday.

I play Recoil 95 Prototypes in my irons, any firsthand comparisons between the DartV and those? I'm still liking my current shafts, but they've seen a few rebuilds, and I want to have a backup plan in case they bite the dust somehow. They're Recoil Customs, too, so practically impossible to replace if one breaks or otherwise becomes unusable.

I'm back with feedback on the Dart 105S, and the Dart 90 R and S, and the Dart 105 S and X are all the exact same shaft as their Dart V counterparts, just with a different paint job. I hit them the other day head to head with my Recoil 95 Prototypes

Compared to my recoil prototype 95 F4's, they feel stiffer and heavier specifically in the top half of the shaft. They feel harsher than the recoils, in the vein of a steel shaft type of harsh feedback. I could feel the head more with the recoils, which is to be expected with the weight difference, but I found myself trying to jerk my way through with the Dart. Guy said they probably used a different mandrel to make the Dart than the Recoils, which would explain all of those characteristics if it's thicker in the butt of the shaft.
