Making A Hole In One On A Temporary Green By Yourself

Saw a post this morning where a guy made a hole in one on a temporary green and was playing by himself... Would you classify this as a legit hole in one or not considering it was on a temporary green?

Even if he was solo, it still happened. Unless he’s a liar. 
But, the temporary green ruins it. 
Still it’s way better than the guy who wanted to claim an ace for a shot he hit on a simulator.

Unwitnessed - not an ace. Temp green - is there a rule about that?

 

When I made my ace that didn't count It was witnessed and on a green I'd played an hour earlier and too late to play 17 more holes.

This guy popped his ball into the hole with his tee shot.  Of course it was a hole in one.  What else could it be?  

 

Ok, it wasn't one for the record book, for winning prizes, for opening  a bottle of whisky for - but we're not into an existential argument about a tree in the Amazon forest falling with no-one around to see or hear it.  And, by the way, the Rules don't make any distinction between a temporary and a permanent green.  There is one putting green per hole, and if you knock your ball into the hole with your first shot, you have scored 1. 

 

 By all means put it into the context of the solo, casual round but why rain on the guy's parade? 

 

My only hole in one was in a casual round and I couldn't  make any claims for the handouts you get for the "achievement" but nobody can tell me it wasn't a hole in one.  In truth, the shot itself was a sorry affair, a sclaff that barely lifted six inches off the ground, pitched halfway to the green and rolled the rest of the way into the hole.  But no matter.  I hit my first shot off the tee and the ball was in the hole.  That without question was a hole in one.  Even I can count that number of strokes.

I wonder what is so difficult to understand what a HIO is? I hope Colin has made it perfectly clear to all readers of this thread.

HIO is a HIO. This stuff about not "legit" is garbage. Temp green is irrelevant, solo play is irrelevant. One stroke from teeing area into the hole is a HIO. In this case, this is the only guy that knows it is true but he can still enjoy the experience that no-one can take away.

I started playing the game in 1967 and 6 weeks ago I had my first HIO. Yep, that's a long time coming. It was a club comp, it won nearest the pin (5 golf balls prize) and that was it. The game itself was a bit ordinary otherwise. My playing partners were a bit excited to watch a good shot that went in but nobody else gives a toss. Over the years, I've holed a dozen full shots from the fairway for eagles and even once a second stroke on a par 5, but I'd never done it on a par 3 until now.

I'll wait right here for anyone who can find a Rule of Golf that defines a "legitimate" Hole in One.  You know, a Rule that says "unwitnessed" isn't legitimate, or that says on a temporary green isn't legitimate.  Actually, I won't wait here, I know nobody will find it, I'm going to go play golf.  Its an ace, the player holed his first shot from the tee, to the only hole available on that hole.  Ace.

Totally agree that this is legit. A hole in one is a hole in one. The course may not give you any free stuff (pin flag, etc.) without a witness, but who cares?

 

I have four in my life… one during a competition, two on guys trips, and one playing by myself. On April Fools Day, of all days. For that last one I went into the bar after the round. Found some friends at the bar and told them what had happened. They immediately said it was not legit since it was not witnessed. I pointed out that meant I did not have to buy them drinks and their tone immediately changed. LOL

I think is funny when  people say a HIO isn’t a HIO unless there are some external forces at play that validate it. Your total score in golf is the sum of strokes + penalties. If your first shot off the tee goes into the cup on that hole what is it if it’s not a HIO? Maybe you won’t get a plaque or feel compelled to buy someone else’s drink, but those things have zero effect of your score.

 

On the topic of HIO’s - in one league I play in we’ve had a long gap since the last one. It’s probably been 18 months- 2 years, and then 2 weeks ago I looked at one closest to the pin signs and saw someone had gotten one. I go to the clubhouse for my free beverage and find out there were 3 of them. I wonder what the odds were for that to happen.

Some years ago on this forum there was a story of a youngster who in a competition hit his ball into the hole on a par3 but got a penalty for slow play on that same hole. Now, is that a HIO as on the score card it says 2 ...?

If I'm the youngster, I'd still claim an ace.  A year or two down the road, nobody will remember the penalty.

In all fairness, it is an ace.

 

However, there are HIO clubs in which the membership is only granted against a certified score card and the score must be one (1). Perhaps exeptions can be made in exceptional cases, I have no idea.

Yeah, having an ace, and receiving any recognition or compensation under a club's rules are two different things.  Those "rules" vary from one club to another, golf clubs, HIO clubs, HOI insurance at events, all kinds of different criteria.  And none are "official" under the Rules of Golf.

Agree.  And if I was the temp green guy,  I would not.  I mean,  I'd write down  a 1 but I'd regard it as at least a big fat asterisk in terms of being a "hole-in-one" and if I never had one previously,  I would still feel like I didn't have one.

It was not his fault that there was a temporary green AND he made it with one single stroke from the tee into the hole. What else is needed?

Why is a guy playing by himself writing anything down?

I guess it depends on perspective. It's always been attested, eighteen holes for it to be counted here. And by counted I mean getting the little trophy with the ball mounted and your name on the board in the clubhouse. 

We had a similar debate come up recently over putting the course record up. However clean and place through the green has been on permanently so I said there hasn't been a course record. 

As someone who hasn't had one, my greatest fear in golf is playing by myself 😂
