I'm trying to find a way to defend this or discount the test...but I can't. Hard to believe the PXG is longer and straighter.

PXG has come a long way from their original drivers, to be honest the first few generations were garbage. They are definitely competing if not exceeding some of the big boys now.

Definitely go towards your 34g weight vs the 19g weight you mentioned previously. A local shop could probably measure your current swingweight for you to provide more guidance. As guidance, each 1/2" of shorter shaft is about 3 swingpoints less, and each 1.5 to 2 grams of extra headweight increases swingweight by 1 point. So even if I assume your shaft is similar to something like the HZRDUS Red 50, with your 3/4" less length, you lost around 4.5 swingweights. The extra 6g from a 34g weight should get you back 3 to 4.5 swingpoints. Also, if you have a something to use as a fulcrum (balance point) and you're good with a tape measure, and a good kitchen scale, you can fairly accurately measure the swingweight yourself. See link below. I use a block of wood I cut into a triangle (almost like a doorstop). I'm not a fitter so I won't comment on the shaft weight or type. For me personally (my swing), I like a D3 to D4 swingweight. Some like it less and some like it more.

Personally, if it is appropriate, I would take your club and various weights and get fit (loft, lie, weight, swingweight). They'll help you dial it in.

P.S. I have not seen any heavier weights than 34g

I have a quick question for you. I picked up a 10k on the secondary market. It was built with the standard Alta 55g shaft at 45.75”. The person had installed a Ventus Velacore Blue 5 shaft measuring at exactly 45” installed. The original 28g weight that was built with the Alta 55g is installed. I haven’t hit it yet but what weight would be me close to that original D3 swing weight? Am I even that far off, I admittedly am not the most knowledgeable about swing weighting. Thanks!

You would have to measure the current swingweight as I could not exactly guess it. However, your shaft is around 58-59g (uncut) and it is not counterbalanced. Perhaps as a comparable, I'll use the HZRDUS Smoke RED shafts. The Red 50 weighs around 50-51g and the Red 60 around 60g. At 45.25" with the Red 50 and the Red 60, the Ping 10k has a swingweight of D3 and D4 respectively. At 45" (1/4" shorter), the swingweight should be around 1.5 points less. The weight of your shaft is very close to the HZRDUS Red 60. At 45", the Rd 60 would have a swingweight around D2.5. Yours is probably similar, between D2 and D3, which is just about standard. Only way to know for sure is measure the swingweight though.

Best $70 you can spend…takes all the guess-work out of the equation.

Thanks for that detailed response. I’m going to give it a go this weekend and see how it goes. If I need to make any adjustments I’ll head to Ping next week as I’m local. Thanks again.

I've never used a GC Quad, but do you know if what club is selected affects how the launch monitor reads the ball, or is it purely how the club gets labelled in the reports?

Not to sound like a tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist, but I noticed the 10K was set to 3 Wood, while the PXG was set to Driver (noticed the same in the AI Smoke test and the Callaway won despite being set to 3W so it may not be an issue).

My only other thought is that literally everybody in this thread has had to loft the 10K up a degree from whatever they were playing before, and I wonder if his insistence on testing at 8º hurt him.

Club selection does not matter.  However, sub 2000 spin shots will lead to exaggerated carry numbers, which likely explains the large gains with the PXG.

Did some testing today with 10k, LST, and PXG Gen 6. Got some base line numbers with all 3 and the PXG was clearly the fastest with best dispersion. LST just lost a lot on miss hits. Dialled in the shaft to a Diamana WB43X. And strike got a lot more centred, swing speed went up, ball speed went up, dispersion tightened up.

Went back and the PXG and 10K were neck and neck. I feel like the PXG might have had a touch more potential. But 10K had the edge on consistency. I think I will try and get them both shafted up, then dial in the settings and maybe look at golf ball as well.

10K to LST, I was on average lower spin with 10K as it controls the spin on poor strikes so well. That is going to be huge for some people.

FWIW I have a 10K with the 28g weight playing with the Venus Blue TR 6-X at 45” playing length and it measures D3.5 with a NDMC midsize grip.

Played 18 with mine this past Sunday.  I have a 9 degree with the Tour 2.0 Black 65X.  It was my first round in over 2 months and the driver felt great.  Very forgiving.  I normally play a sub 45in driver but this measures 45 3/4.  Definitely think the increased MOI helps.  Im curious about the shaft though.  PING doesn't give much info on them.

Alright, back from my fitting and it was interesting to say the least. I wasn't having a great swing day, so my numbers were a bit all over the map, but definitely saw improvements after leaving the Tour Black.

I ended up back in the RDX Red in stiff, and we'll see how that goes on the course. Weirdest of all was that when he checked the swingweight with the Black Tour it came in at D5.3 (!!). It was still coming in a bit high with the RDX Red (D5) and so he swapped out the back weight. He didn't have the 430 tungsten weights, so put in the 425 tungsten weight in 23g to get it to a D3 swing weight.

I'll be fascinated to see how it goes on the course on Thursday. I wonder a bit if that'll feel too light and not be as forgiving, so we'll see what it plays like.

Are you sure of that length on the 10k w/ Tour Black shaft?  If you didn't request longer build (or if you bought it off the rack), the Tour shafts all play 45.25".  The Alta shafts play 45.75.

Just curious.

You might want to have your head weighed. Sounds like you got a heavy one.

Another great driving display Ian. Well done PXG, the driver looks awesome. Hats off to Ping for its distance though. Did you have the reduced 22g weight in the back of the Ping again? Would love to know the reduced MOI number with the weight reduction.

@ianfrasergolf
The weight was 22g and estimated MOI was around 9700

My fitter ended up swapping the club entirely and the second head was still north of D5 in the RDX (should be D4 according to their website).

Mine swingweights at D3 at 44.75" with the Tour Chrome 2.0. Was supposed to be 45" but for whatever reason Ping sent it shorter, but not an issue for me.

Headweight is exactly 206 without the adapter. 28 gram weight.

That's strange as Tour chrome should be D3 at 45.25", should be lower swingweight at 44.75"

Mine is also 45.25” for the RDX btw. Looks like my head is actually a bit lighter than @dlow206 - as he said 206g not including the adaptor. Whereas mine would be 202g minus the adaptor.

I’ll be very interested to see how it feels with the lighter back weight. I’m tempted to order the 25g too which I guess would be around D4.

The math does make sense if the stated headweight on the website is 206g including the adapter. My driver at 44.75", if it was at 206g including the adapter would be roughly D0. But 206g plus adapter weight is roughly 212g. About 6g of headweight would put it back around D3.

Why would he do that? Almost seems like he was trying to give an advantage to the PXG driver? Was he playing a heavier shaft?

He was using VF 5X in both drivers. He’s trying to keep swing weight around his optimal swing weight range for all test clubs. Without reducing the weight of the rear weight it would swing ridiculously heavy.
