Best WARM winter golf jacket

NevinW

Recommended Posts

I played in a tournament this week where it was 47 degrees with wind and some rain.  I froze.  I clearly don't tolerate cold like I used to.  I thought I was dressed appropriately for the weather but I was clearly wrong, and I need to amp it up another level.   I am looking for an insulated golf jacket with arms that will keep me warm but will still allow me to swing a club without getting in the way.  Any suggestions?

I live in Nova Scotia and play as long as there is no snow on the ground. The  Arc’teryx Atom is the best golf jacket for cold weather. Obviously not marketed for golf but it doesn’t limit mobility, keeps me warm in cold temperatures and is a nice looking jacket as well.

How warm are we talking in how cold of

temperatures? I’m always looking for that unicorn winter golf jacket!

And you said it doesn’t limit mobility… does it have stretch built in? Or just the design seems to allow for movement?

When the weather drops into the upper 30s and low 40s here in Germany, I reach for these in my rotation:

J Lindeberg Mathis sweater

Ping Norse jacket

Galvin Green Lanzo jacket

Galvin Green Duke 1/4 zip

Kjus Gemini jacket

My favorite is the Lindeberg sweater. It's lined with a windproof lining so I'm warm with just a thin merino wool baselayer and this sweater. I'll keep a down vest in my bag if it's really cold.

Ping Norse is also warm but it's a little loose on me. I prefer a more slim/athletic cut.

Lanzo jacket is also warm with a merino baselayer or midlayer.

Gemini jacket is thin but really warm if I layer with the GG Duke.

The key to staying warm when playing in the winter is thin layers. Start with a thin merino wool baselayer, maybe a midlayer, and a waterproof/windproof outer layer. Add a vest if needed.

The UA Coldgear Reactor Hybrid golf jacket is darn good. Living in Northern MI it’s essential if you want to prolong the season as much as possible. I have two and just wore one this past weekend with temps in 40s with wind and rain. No issues at all and actually took a layer off underneath after a few holes.

In the age of layering, most companies who manufacture jackets for golf go down one of two roads:     1) warmth -- so they give you insulated chest area with reasonable stretch for warmth, but the arms are designed to be thin and stretchy so that the natural golf swing is easier;   2) windproof/waterproof -- not much warmth, focus is on just keeping the chilly wind out.

So, the design is such that you buy BOTH a jacket for warmth and some type of other jacket/sweater that is windproof.    Not gonna find very many selections or brands that offer both warmth and windproof in one piece in the golf garment market.   That's why some people often venture out to the outdoor garment market for those things, although sometimes those garments don't offer the same level of stretchiness (is that a word?) that golf specific garments do.

The GOAT in this category is the Mizuno Windlite Flex.  Its both windproof and stretches. Its a sweater on the outside lined with a windproof material on the inside providing me the best cold weather protection.  It does get to warm if wind isn't blowing and its above 45 degrees though but just shed it and put it back in your golf bag.

I wear a windproof/waterproof outer layer, middle layer, with a base layer, and, I adjust the middle layer depending on the temperature. I have a couple of insulated golf jackets, but, I get too warm wearing them (I am a walker).

The Ping Norse is a nice jacket, as is the Adidas Frostguard. I own both, but, I only use them at the driving range. I prefer the ability to shed layers, when, I get too warm.

The first 2 versions of the Norse were perfect. The newest ones are too bulky for me to play in.
I wear the original Norse with just a base layer when it’s in the 30s. If it gets over 45 it’s too warm unless there’s no sun or very windy.

I have an adidas frostguard vest that I like and a sun mountain one I picked up from tgw on sale for around 60$

I wear those in the 40-50 degree range.
frostguard is maybe a little warmer but more stiff. The sun mountain is pretty good for the price.
the ping Norse vest is very warm for the weight just didn’t fit me right

All these golf jackets I’ve tried are too tight across the shoulders in the address position and interfere with the swing.  And a lot of them up have insulated body, but the arms are not insulated.
Still looking.

If the jacket is too tight across the shoulders then size up.

Love the Sunice Hamilton.  Torso has more insulation to keep the core warm, but the arms are thinner to let out heat and aid flexibility.

Gotta throw another vote in for the Arc'Teryx Atom for the best singular jacket. Though if you're more of a fan of layering you could also go with an ultralight softshell like the Arc'Teryx Gamma Lightweight (previously Gamma SL) that you wear over other layers you might already have like a fleece and/or insulated vest combo. This is what I do with a Marmot alternative to the Gamma SL.

Yup. Here’s my solution.

Base layer, best option has been the tight fitting synthetics.
Thin sweater, wool or cashmere.
Vest. If it is really cold, HEATED vest!

Beanie hat.

Walk the course with this setup and I’m good. If it is windy I will trade the vest for a windbreaker. With the exercise of walking and pushing or carrying, if this does not keep me warm then it is cold enough the ground is frozen and I’m not playing golf.

I do the same.    Also Eddie Bauer windproof fleece lined pants from Costco. $25.

I use the Atom vest as a mid layer with a Patagonia nano-puff on top.

Patagonia down sweater works for me, kinda slides nicely so it works well for my swing.  When it’s really cold i like a covered cart with a heater.

For me I use wool base layers - both pants and shirt.

And I love my Arc'teryx stuff.  Nothing is going to come close to warmth to weight.  Most golf stuff is not well insulated enough IMO.

32 degrees. Any of them. Here is the Mix Media with thinner arms which is fantastic for swinging.

Dollar for dollar there is nothing warmer than 32 degrees.

Yes, I bought a  32 down vest at Costco about 10 years ago, still wearing it, Great.  Their website doesn't have any info about shipping to Canada and returns procedure costs.  But thanks for the info.
