When did that happen? Many tour events get a few of the top players like this one. Rarely if ever did the Honda Classic get a full field of top players. Unlike the API, Doral, Players, etc.

2012 as an example:

POS PLAYER SCORE
1 R. McIlroy -12
T2 T. Woods -10
T2 T. Gillis -10
4 L. Westwood

-8

2016 as an example:

Pos Player R4 Thru Total
1

A. Scott
E F [F] -9

2

S. García
+1 F [F] -8

T3

B. Barber
E F [F] -5

T3

J. Thomas
-1 F [F] -5

5

G. McDowell
-1 F [F] -4

T6

V. Singh
E F [F] -3

T6

R. Fowler
+1 F [F] -3

T8

B. Horschel
-1 F [F] -2

Just an example of some final leaderboards there, but they used to get a good mix of leading players at the Honda in years gone by. It seemed to drop off a bit pre covid and now here we are (obviously LIV hasn't helped).

This

Previously on a "down week" event you'd get maybe 10 of the top 30 guys to play and at least a couple of those guys were always in contention or winning, but now we are getting so many rookies winning because guys are just gearing themselves toward the Premium events and majors unless they need to play a tournament for majors prep or happens to be a sponsor requirement, etc.

Makes me think of the member here who asked during the bad weather at this years AT&T “why does the PGAT schedule these events at times of the year they know it can rain?! ️

Come on! Get ur act together PGAT!!! 😠

Even the idea of there being a time of year when it doesn’t usually rain is alien to me 😄

Admittedly it can get a little weird. For example, the PGAT schedules the West Coast swing during the time of year that we're the most likely to face inclement weather, and this year the luck just worked out that it hit a bunch of tournaments. They could schedule that in the summer and it would be warm and sunny EVERY single day. Even Pebble or Torrey might start the day with the marine layer, but it'll get warm and sunny by noon and almost zero chance of rain and nothing serious enough to delay a tourney.

The problem is that they have to schedule the West Coast swing in Jan/Feb, because the rest of the country is completely unplayable at that time of year. C'mon, you see these guys out there in 55 degree weather bundled up like they're making an expedition to the South Pole as it is... Can you imagine if they had to play in actual cold weather?

I found it hilarious.  I play in those temperatures regularly in shorts and a polo.  Good to about 45*.

There's also the issue of it being easier to keep areas around the green viable in most of Cali. Still dormant if you go far enough out at some of the venues, but the fairways and a decent area surrounding radius is still active. Most everywhere else in the country it's nothing but brown and possibly wet & muddy everywhere but the green and fringe.

Arizona seems to like reminding us regularly that through February the temps have no problem dropping, but at least the courses still present relatively "fair" conditions. They're doing their best to give us pretty much 12 months of golf.

Grats to Eckroat. Shame MWL couldn't get a few of those long putts to drop, but it was really the double bogey early yesterday that let him slide back just a little too far. Nice finish by Knapp as well with only one bogey on the day.

The great season continues.

Congrats to Eckroat on his 1st PGA Tour win.

Followed him on the PGA Tour's The Turn with Ryan Palmer, Harrison Endycott and Wesley Bryan.

He seems to have a good head on his shoulder and a very supportive wife.

The rare example of the PGA Tour doing social media well! Having watched these, whilst I was not glued to the TV, knowing a little bit more about Eckroat through watching him on this, I was keen to see some more of him out on the course which is exactly what I did over the weekend and Monday.
