Go to YouTube and watch his driver and iron swing from 2017 and compare with swings from last year ....ZERO difference.....

Unfortunately I can't find the Golf Central breakdown where they showed the difference in his steepness, most notably with the irons. Did find another source on it, though.

This guy seems to think JT's 2023 swing was getting too steep, but not quite sure he's enough of an expert on the guy to take at face value. Let me know your thoughts.

Cue the kvetching about him winning.  Sour grapes IMO.  Sponsors have the ability to invite anyone they want.

Seriously, he gets rewarded for a lousy approach shot from the fairway with a free drop on to the green.

With Malnati's drop on 16 and Clark's river dance to mash down his drop area last week, it's time for the USGA/R&A to clarify/change the rule on sprinkler heads.

I understand if you're going to hit a sprinkler head with your club you should get relief, but we're pretending guys can take stances like Jimenez below, but somehow if their toe is touching a sprinkler or they take a funky stance to show they would touch it, they need to be given relief.

It's nonsense.  And to give a guy a drop out of thick rough that allows him to then putt it on the green is insane to the spirit of the game.

Nearest point of relief not nearer the hole is the fairest way and thats the rule - I'm sure smarter people have considered this and it remains the same which is telling.

A rule that is a "free drop; nearest point of relief not nearer the hole but if you are in the rough you remain in the rough" may sound good but I'm certain in reality it would be farcical so rule as it is may occasionally work in a players favour is the trade-off

Also zero relevance in the comparison with the Jimenez shot and the Malinati scenario.

I think it should be ruled similar to temporary immovable obstruction.

To your point on the Jimenez shot, why is relief granted if your toe is touching a sprinker? What is the genesis of the rule?

The point of that picture is that these guys are INSANELY talented.  There isn't a guy on Tour who is really impacted by a sprinkler head unless their club is going to hit it.

If your swing path is going to cause you to impact the sprinkler head, by all means relief should be granted.

If the ball isn't on that path, but your toe is going to graze the sprinkler head or you'd have to take a 1" wider stance to not touch it (if desired), you shouldn't get relief.

I'm not saying he wasn't entitled to relief under the current rules or that his drop was illegal.  We should want people playing from the lie that it ended up in from the previous shot as much as possible.

If their toe is touching a sprinkler in the situation you describe they are 100% entitled to relief.  The reason is obvious.

In my weekly match play league if I asked for relief because my foot was in the vicinity of a sprinkler head, which would allow me to putt instead of chip, I would be ridiculed and called a cheater.

Because "vicinity" isn't part of the rule.

Anyway, this has all been hashed over and over last week and in the Rules forum.

It’s simple to understand really. One is part of the strategic design of the course to intentionally impact play, the other is a feature meant purely for maintenance of the course and was NOT strategically placed by the designer to impact the way the course plays.

Sometime Thursday or Friday, Golf Central was just showing some range stuff, and had a camera behind JT.  Bones was using an alignment stick to push against JT's right shoulder at setup, and was trying to push his shoulder thru the backswing to get it to rotate.  Someone was off camera taking video or photos, and could be heard saying "still too steep, really need to get that shoulder turned more.  Apply more force with the stick Bones."  They would do it a few times, then Bones would back off and JT would make a full swing.  It seems pretty obvious he and his camp are working on this issue.

As there should be.

He's a cheater.

Tampled the rough before drops at Pebble and The Players and clearly moved his improved his lie at Bay Hill.

Regarding Bay Hill. The ball most definitely moved and did not return to its original position. But it actually moved further down into the rough resulting in a worse lie IMO.

*just an observation based on no bias or meant to reflect on any other perceived infractions
