😂 I accept this post as well as I added to it. Was watching Seinfeld yesterday. The fro-yo and Kramer n Newman return empty bottles to MI episodes. 🤣

*thanks for slapping me back into this is just sports/entertainment talk mode! I’ll save my comments concerning Tiger’s mental health and internal struggles for PsychWRX 😊

I have no issue with them giving the exemption, but TW is cooked.  He cannot compete with these guys on these set ups when you play once a month.  Honestly hope he misses the cut or in the event he makes the cut he finishes DFL like the Masters.  I never was a fan, but with that said, he shouldn’t lower himself to ceremonial golfer.

Driver - Testing in Progress

7W - Taylormade Ti Bubble II

4-5 Hybrids - Cleveland Halo XL (21*, 24*)

7i - GW - Titleist T200 7-GW

GW - Taylormade MG3 52*

SW - Sub70 JB Forged 56*

LW - Sub70 JB Forged 62*

Putter - Sled 01 (for thr moment)

Ball - Srixon Q Star

He is done (I've said that before and then 2019).  He just hasn't come to grips with that yet.   That said, he needs to "park it" until he hits 50 and when he can ride a cart and he likely will win again on the Sr. Tour.

Youre thinking playing in the US Open is some big thing. And it is…to you

To TW it’s just fun week and teeing it up at a course he really likes

Plus he really got a lot of merchandise to move yo! Gotta get the gear some air time 🤣

Nah, Tiger sees how badly these young bucks are hitting their wedges into green and say to himself.............." I can win again"

Golf doesn't need to "wean" itself off of Woods, as it didn't need to wean itself off of Arnie, or Jack, or Tom. These people weren't, and Tiger isn't, "distractions".  They are legends. They were all extended invitations by the majors not only as an acknowledgement for their contributions to the game, but because (like it or not) a lot of fans still love (and loved) watching them, and because the current up and coming players love playing with them. The youngest generation on tour grew up watching (and being inspired by) Tiger as kids. Imagine BSing with him in the locker room, or even being in a group with him.

Exactly. That dude (amateur college player IIRC?) who played with him on Sunday at The Masters? 50 years from now, that guy's grandkids are going to be rolling their eyes at all the times Gramps tells the story about how he played with Tiger Woods on Sunday at The Masters, and beat him

To the grandkids, Tiger Woods will just be some other old golf guy they don't really recognize as anything but a name in the history books, but they'll see how freakin' proud Gramps is to tell that story.

Never been a Tiger fan, but I've got no idea how anyone can argue he doesn't deserve/shouldn't get an exemption.  He should get an exemption every year (assuming he's not otherwise exempt) until he decides to retire.

Yeah and doesn't matter where he's finished in any tournament, even those he won, if Scottie is in the field winning at -15, even as a massive Tiger fan he's not getting close to that score at this stage of his life.

If anyone finishes -15 on an Open setup at Pinehurst, I'll personally bow from the ankles. Kaymer played out of his damn mind and couldn't reach double digits.

Even if his chances are low, I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t want one of the top two players ever to play. Rather see him hit a good or bad shot every once in a while and his insights on the course in an interview or how he fared against the best in the field. Although he has some shots, his overall play seems to have dwindled since his last car accident.

The more exemptions they hand out, they less open the tournament is.

Are you sure that's how it works?  Honestly interested to know how that works as to US Open qualifications.

Hmmm…The USGA runs the open, they have nearing 10,000 people attempting to qualify.  They also set the qualification rules, and also give out a few exemptions.  So Tiger gets one exemption, and one aspiring pro or amateur doesn’t get in , if that aspirant is any good he’ll break through at another event.  If not , that’s the way it is.
I don’t recall anyone complaining when Jack and Arnie were given exemptions, nor Hale Irwin,  on a special exemption, went on to win.

I'd love to see 0.  Make everyone go through the qualifying rounds.

But I know thats not realistic.

Lets see

Out of 156 spots more than half look like they are exempt

The biggest categories are:

Top 60 OWGR, past 10 years US Open winners, past 5 years Open, PGA, Masters winners, top-10 from previous years US Open, past 3 years Players Championship winners

Then there’s exemptions for about 5 top amateurs, and then about 5 more for winning other events or winning multiple pga tour events.

Whats that? Prolly like 90 exemptions more or less.

Youre right, that’s quite a few.

Most would say a top 60 owgr player has qualified. And players who win should be exempt for a number of years. And certain amateur winners should be exempt.

But should the entire top-10 finishers from last years US Open be exempt? And if you won the PGA 5 years ago should you be exempt?

Definitely debatable.

But the bottom line is

TW should definitely be exempt 🤣🍻

And of those "exemptions" - they all earned them.  Some not most recently, but they all earned them.  It's not like they are exempting @bscinstnct because of his stellar WRX postings.

Tiger has earned every honor golf has to offer, no question.  But, at some point, he has to acknowledge that he cannot seriously contend playing one tournament a month.

As long as the guys still want to have a go and the crowds want to see them the only harm is for the handful who would have just made it in at the bottom of open quals with next to zero hope to win. Arnie, Jack, Tiger, et al aren't keeping golf's next big thing from making it in.

While there are a pretty large number of exemptions, I'd find it hard to argue letting in a few more qualifiers with feel good stories that most will forget by the end of the day would make things more competitive. Feel goods certainly won't see a bigger draw than a field with those who have been to the big show and have a better chance to make the cut and win rounded out by known Tour players who still have a following.

If the public ever shifts and the least-capable Ams become a bigger mover than the some of the former best from the Tour then perhaps the model will change.
