Just had the weirdest round of my life. 46 on the front and 36 on the back!

Recommended Posts

Started off hot, despite a worrisome 3 putt for double on 4. However, the wheels completely came off on the par 5 6th with 5 strokes inside 120 yards. Followed up with bogey, double, triple (palm tree on 9 ate my tee shot so I had to hit another). Told myself it was a new 9 at the turn, and played the back 9 of my life. I hit a long putt with about 5 feet of break on the 245 yard par 3 15th, and it started to sink in that I could realistically shoot under par on the back. It was a challenge to deal with the nerves, but I finished strong despite the bogey on 18 (my drive was stuck by a bush and had to be punched out, but I still gave myself an 11 footer for par).  I’m still absolutely pumped about the back 9 as a 13 cap!

Might need a clarification on that one. ☺

He recovered to have an 11 footer for par. He missed and bogeyed the hole.

If a 10-shot difference between front nine and back nine score is the weirdest your golf ever gets, you must be what the USGA handicap material used to refer to as Steady Eddie. I have a 10-shot difference between nines at least once or twice a month (admittedly, I do play every day). I don't know what my all time biggest difference has been but there have been plenty of times I've shot 38 or 39 on one nine and 50-something on the other.

Probably at some point I've been nearly 18 shots different front to back (or back to front, it's equally likely either direction).

That sounds stressful! I can definitely jump 10 strokes over a day or two, but my nines are usually pretty consistent. Typically my biggest swings are only about 5/6 strokes, but even then it’s something like a 47-42. I don’t normally go from complete trash to lights out (or vice versa) at the turn. The stretch of 8 pars or better in a row was the longest I’ve ever had!

You just tell yourself “great nine” and conveniently try to forget the other side😇

I can relate, but in reverse.  Three weeks ago, shot 39 on the front nine and then proceeded to triple 10 and 12 and finish 50 on the back for an 89 total.

I did the exact same thing this week:  39/50. Reversed it pretty much on the same course two days later: 45/39.

The 10 shots swing sums up golf in a nutshell to me. It’s like watching PGA Tour pros win one week and miss the cut the next. Golf is a funny sport. My strangest 10 shot swing was a 43-33 in a tournament about 18 years ago now.

Had a similar story but mine came with a moral- Started last Wednesday double, triple, double, bogey, bogey, bogey. 10 over after 6.

Ok- this round is shot right?

Wrong- I played the next 12 holes 1 over. 2 bogeys, 1 birdie (kick in, missed a HIO by 4 inches) and par everywhere else. Golf became briefly easy that day my friends...I pulled off almost every shot I tried. Crazy.

Never ever ever give up.

This weekend was similar, 42 and 36.

Going out, I couldn't seem to find my swing, which is regularly done with in 3–5 holes.  NOT until teeing off on 18, did I realize I had been playing with a chicken-wing, killing my distance?  I was thinking age is slapping me in the face.

But on #18 412yds, I realized what I was doing, adjusted and using 2 iron, hit a pretty shot down the right side of the fairway, then again, 2 iron fade around the right bend to short of the green, baby pitch to 10', made putt.

Walked off 18 mumbling for the next few hours, "it took 18 holes for me to realize chicken wing." grr.

I agree with @McMunch NEVER give up.

Happens to me all the time.  48/40 this past weekend (48 was +13 on par 35 and 40 was +4 on par 36).  Last week was 47/40 and 44/36.  A few months ago I shot 51/34...LOL.

Large differences in scores between 9s for me are largely influenced by how bad my big misses are punished.  I generally hit the ball consistently in terms of distance, but my dispersion pattern left and right can be awful.  Sometimes my misses are OB or water...and sometimes I'm just hitting a wedge into the green from another fairway.  A lot of times I'll look back on my round and the actual quality of my golf shots are not that different between two 9s that I scored very differently on.

I remember a round playing with my uncle years back when I was off about 9. I went double, bogey, bogey, double, and I honestly thought about walking in because I couldn’t keep the ball in play. Decided to laugh it off instead and played the final fourteen holes in -1.

I learnt so much about attitude and keeping going from that round.

Once 34 front 9 then 45 back nine.
I had lots of confidence front 9. Then I chunk a chip on the by the green on 9th.
after that I was full of self doubt in the back nine. It’s hard for me to reset

The other time it was reverse when I shot better back nine.  Was cold day and I really didn’t feel like playing. Played poorly first few holes and then once I was swinging the club few times really got into my game and play much better back nine

I will admit that the first time I shot even Par at my local, it didn't start well. I went out in 40 and figured, "Well, that's that..." Essentially, stopped caring. Proceeded to birdie 11,12,13,17 to come in with a 32. The whole back nine I didn't even LOOK at the scorecard.

I figured that's how I would look at golf for the rest of my days. I never know where I stand (in general). I may mark/fill in scores every 3,4,5 holes and never check totals. I am blissfully UNAWARE that "if I shoot X on this hole, I break X... etc..." Never enters my head.

A few years ago, I was playing with my usual buddies and as we got off 16, he remarked "jeez, you're irons are on fire, you're 1 over..." I nearly decapitated him with a 3 wood... "NEVER tell someone that!". Of course, I proceeded to bogey the 17th, probably the easiest par 3 on the planet. But recovered with a birdie on 18.

Can't count how many times I have been mid forties on one side and mid to high thirties on the other.

Dozens of times minimum.

My biggest swing ever was during a club tournament with a bad hangover.   50 front  37 back.   Had 3 water balls, an OB, and a couple 3 putts on that front 9.

We played the 9's out of order, so I opened with 44, seriously considered going home at the turn, ate a sandwich instead, and played very (relatively) uneventful golf on the back to end the day with one only 4 career even par 9's.

The only things I changed was saying "Im not going to go after driver on the back" and "Im going to hammer putts now" (most of the big numbers on the front were either drives into jail or leaving it short and 3 putting the slow greens)

Weirdest round? Oh I can top these.

A few years back at The Bear Trace at Tim's Ford I shot 62 on the front, ordered 3 double jack and cokes at the turn, and shot 36 on the back.
