Have to say, I find Pinehurst more appealing, both visually and as a layout for exciting golf now, compared to 2014, arguably the most boring major of the millenium. It was with some fascination I saw the Oil Scandinavian's face go from hopeful to more and more disgustful. A bit brutal to show him in the broadcast all the time. Playing alongside Bryson, in some kind of featured pairing supposedly. 

But Pinehurst was even more appealing when Campbell won, Pines all over the place makes it a bit monotonous.

Put this in the unpopular golf takes thread - but to me the whining about coverage being on streaming is exhausting.

 

When we had 3 hours of coverage a day, people complained. When it went to 4 or 5, people complained. Now you can watch roughly 10-12 hours FREE on the USGA website - with all sorts of featured groups - or USA *plus* add in the Peacock coverage - and thats not good enough for people. Its a few bucks, if you're browsing these forums, you can afford it.

 

Things cost money. There's a reason I dont get to watch all the MLB or NFL games I want to for free.

Yeah it’s the way the sports world is going.  It’s annoying but there is nothing we can do now.  NFL games including a playoff game on Peacock, Amazon Prime, etc.  The greed of the owners knows no limits.

 

That being said it is absolutely awesome the amount of coverage we are getting here.  Being able to see Pinehurst at dawn and watch the first groups go off is fantastic.

Folks already pay for cable to get GC.

Putting it on a NBC streaming service is greed.

Also you can't DVR Peacock. 
 

It's not the money for most of us it's the principle of it.

Why would you want to DVR it, you can go into the app and watch it afterward, they literally record it for you.

 

But exactly - its not the money, for most people they just want something to complain about.

The course setup is perfect I think. It will get harder as the tournament progresses….doubt we will see either a -15 winner or a clown show where no one can make a birdie. 
 

I hope I’m right and this will solidify #2 as one of if not The premier host of our national Open. Love it. 👏🏼
 

The amount and variety of coverage is tremendous. Nothing is perfect….the announcers can’t use five words when fifty will do, some are just plain ignorant, and the commercial breaks on the USA coverage are too frequent and too long. But those gripes are balanced out for me with the sheer amount of coverage. 👍🏼

It's not hate, but I do know why. 

 

In fact, I remember the exact moment, sitting there watching Sunday golf and it came over me like a tidal wave.  I suppose trying to describe now it is difficult. Perhaps it could be compared to the inspiration that hits an artist for a new painting or an archeologist's discovery of something previously unknown or the guy that invented snow tires.  

 

Whatever happened on that seemingly ordinary Sunday afternoon, from that point forward, I was not a fan of Scheffler.

The fact you have to defend their decision where to broadcast it speaks volumes but you're right we shouldn't complain about greed and just remain silent. 
 

I guess I better not complain about hole #2 either. lol.

I appreciate that we have the ability to watch both, but why put the actual full coverage on Peacock and only the featured groups on cable? That's the opposite of how it was yesterday.

That shot (and Svensson's too) got me worried that we may be heading for an unplayable circus setup.  We'll see how it goes when more players get there. 

 

Later players will have the benefit of seeing how it's been playing before they get there so they can adapt.

Why is Pinehurst so tricked up for this major? I’d say it’s embarrassing for the course that a pro can almost hole his ball only to see it spin back off the green. Mark Hubbard Rd 2 Hole 1.

hey, all professional sports are businesses in the entertainment industry. have to dispel the romantic and nostalgic notion of the u.s. open of old. it’s a new world of maximizing every dollar, wrestling as much as possible from advertisers and filling screens, tv, websites and apps, with optimum dollars per pixel.

 

unless you’re betting on a player, you don’t get a penny if they win. they aren’t going to send you a check for being a “fan.”

 

muting the horror of tv analysts is one way to appreciate the golf, the good and bad bounces, the course and the way players approach holes. or watching in person. how do people on site survive without someone telling them what they’re looking at? blah, blah, blah.
