Ping i200, i210 - difference?

gvogel

Recommended Posts

Owned both. The i210 look a bit better IMO. Feel? Not sure how much different but i210 could feel a touch thicker/softer off the face while the 200 I perceived to be a thinner/crisper feeling. Performance? Not much.

The 210 long irons tend to fly higher.

Ping definitely set out to make the 210 feel softer and they succeeded. I like the looks of both. I owned the 200s and only tested the 210. The 200 felt more firm to me in a good way. Feel and sound both were pleasing. So it is whichever you like. Very fine clubs that are easy to play. Performance was same or very close to it.

It’s a bit interesting- While the statistic that tends to jump out is the lower MPF of the i210, the only significant difference is the VCOG, or vertical center of gravity, which is significantly higher in the i210. One hit against the i200 was lack of distance, which raising the CG will address, at the potential expense of impacts low on the face and lower overall trajectory.

Is the i210 hypothetically longer than the i200, or have you tried both and concluded that the i210 is longer?

Also, for someone (like me) who is only hitting his 7-iron 140 theses days, would the difference be significant?

By moving the mass concentration *at all* they’re changing the trajectory, spin characteristics, and force concentration. As @BogeyParBogey points out, it will effect players differently depending on their swing mechanics. If you strike down and through the ball with a ‘proper’ weight shift, Ping has biased the i210 more towards you. If you’re a sweeper, or tend to hit thin, they likely believe that you’re better off with the g410, g500, g710, and have moved the i210 further away from that type of player/club.
IMO if you’re 7 iron is 140 yards, you won’t be able to take advantage of the change in flight characteristics provided by the i210 vs. the i200 regardless of your swing profile.

Yeah, I am surprised by reviewers who rave about the feel of the PXG 0211, which is also cast. I thought it felt pretty average and that the i210 blows it away.

I did power spec my i200s to lower the flight and that put the trajectory in the perfect window and gave me the same distances as the TM P790, which I compared it to head to head in same sessions, but the Ping was more to my liking. The 210 flew at the same lower flight without power specs, but I actually like the solid feel of the i200. I do agree the way 210 included some tweaks aimed at Tour players, but it’s also just as easy to address trajectory and distance with loft adjustments because there is plenty of bounce in the Pings.

You made a great point about the “perfect window”, and that’s exactly what I look for in an iron set. It has to launch at a certain angle with the right amount of spin to hold greens.

I bounce back and forth with my Apex MB and i210, but I’m very impressed with the feel and tight shot dispersion pattern; and my hands aren’t sore lol

Both companies offer a variety of shaft options which is a deal closer for me.

I have i210 5-U with AWT R shafts; the irons are awesome but the shafts aren't that efficient for my swing. I found an i200 8 iron and re-shafted with a TT Elevate 95, love the i200 as well, just as accurate, feels great. I scored some i200 heads and plan to build them w/the Elevate 95... The i200s may be a bit more forgiving for me. I may have some 210s for sale in the near future. Both Great sets!

So, I actually have two i210 7-irons, one with the AWT shaft ® and one with the XP 95 ®. I also have two 6-iron, G410 and G700, both with the AWT ® shaft. I ordered these last year during the winter. I also injured by shoulder that winter, and when I tried to hit these last summer it hurt like hell, so I couldn't come to any conclusions. I had shoulder surgery in November, and the good news is that it might ache a bit after hitting balls, nothing serious, and it doesn't hurt at impact.

The XP 95 feels a bit easier to hit than the AWT. At 67, I'm looking for long term ease of use. I might order a G410 6-iron with a graphite shaft. The G700 is pretty darn easy to elevate as well. I think that as I get stronger in the back and shoulders, and also put more miles on my road bike, that I can get back to hitting 7-iron 145.

Fun. I'll end up with a combo set at some point. As of today, I like the i210 7-iron with the XP 95 shaft the most. Wish I could try an Elevate 95, and an XP 105. My Titleist's have a 105T shaft which has served me well for 10 years.

This is good stuff. Great that you are back! Ping offers a nice graphite shaft (and options) that you might like. It does make a difference in dampening and may be a help to you, though I would say the Elevate 95 does a nice job reducing vibrations and it is steel. Still, I have been dabbling in graphite and the feel of both the KBS TGI and Fuji 95 is excellent. And last week I was hitting a Yonex EX310 graphite shaft in a 5 iron and I was impressed. Have always heard they make nice shafts. I think it was an 86 gram shaft. I always had a bias against lighter weight shafts but times and technology have changed. They perform and don’t feel flimsy. There is no doubt you can go to lower weights in graphite and get the same stability as heavier weight steel.

Thanks, that's good information.

I think that I'll pick up 6 - Pw in the i210 with the XP 95 shaft. That will leave me with two i210 7-iron heads that I can use to try a graphite shaft from time to time.

I tried to play a set of AP1's with Steelfiber i95 shafts, soft stepped. Even soft stepped, those things were like rebar, and ruined my tempo when I played with them. Heavier and somewhat flexible tends to work better for me, as my bad move is to get too fast from the top. Which is why XP 105 might be workable.

Gamed both, love both. I prefer the 210s. I do enjoy a softer feel. The 200s felt acceptably soft. I had pro soft inserts in DG 300. The 210s are softer, noticeably. For me that’s preferred. Short irons are deadly in 210s.

It’s interesting because Ping says 210s are softer, and most people here are also echoing that, but I had the 200s and was really excited to get fit into the 210s then was incredibly turned off by the feel of the 210s.

The minor aesthetic changes (smaller appearance) didn’t bother me but the feel change really got me.

I generally fit out for GI clubs with lighter shafts. That said, I tried out the i200 at two different demo days, and the irons flew quite well for me with the AWT 2.0 R-flex shafts. The AWT had lighter shafts in the longer irons than the shorter irons, which I think helped.
And like @gvogel, I hit a 7i about 140 yards. People like us, I think, would benefit from the i200 lower center of gravity.
Going back a decade, this reminds me of the Callaway progression from X20 Tours to X22 Tours. X20 Tours had MPF = 716, while X22 Tours had MPF = 594... surprise! due to higher CoG.
I ended up getting the X20 Tours - they just flew higher and felt smoother, plus about $150 cheaper because they had just ended production. The Hot List praised the X22 Tours as being a "true better golfer's iron," but those of us with double-digit HDCPs much preferred the earlier X20 Tours.

So, I have i210 7-irons with both the XP 95 shaft and the AWT, both regular. At this point, i think that the XP 95 is a smarter option, at age 67.

But I can see that I am going to have to purchase an i200 7-iron with the XP 95 shaft before I order a set, a set being 6-iron to PW.

And then as soon as I do that, I am going to purchase G410's with the same shafts, and play both for a year or so until I figure it out. On the other hand, been playing AP1 712 with a few AP2 714 short irons for 6 to 8 years, so I'm good to go on new irons.

I just got a new set of i200 4-U with the AWT after a 12 month stint with Srixon Z765’s. The 765’s were great irons but I always eventually come home to Ping.

After several range sessions and a round with the i200’s, I forgot how solid Ping irons are and how I miss that unique Ping feel. The i200’s have a different feel than the 765’s but to me, feel just as good. Distances and overall performance is similar between the two sets.

The last set of Ping irons I owned was the i20’s and the i200’s beat the i20’s in every category. I have pretty much owned every set of i irons going back to the i3 blades and the i200’s are the best I’ve played.

I did have have to add some lead tape to get the sw up to D2/3 because they were a little light for me but now they feel perfect.

I also scored a set of Glide Stealth wedges to go with the i200’s and they are incredible. I can see why they get so much love.

So glad to be home with Ping!

The discussion on whats soft or not can be a complicated one, but I would say the i210s offers something different than a soft Mizuno iron would. Its like a mix of feel (great feedback), and stable and soft (its hard to describe). You can only get that feeling from Ping irons. I love it cause it feels like Im being able to control the ballflight. Ive played a number of players irons in the past but my i210s are really great and will stay in the bag for a long time. Love the LZ shaft as well. I think I get a very true flight but with a touch more help than I was getting from my previous set (Wilson Staff V6) and the loft are a touch stronger so they get me the distances Ive been used to over the years. I could play the i200s as well, but head to head I prefer the i210s.
