Adding a 25 degree hybrid to the bag

I replaced my 27* ap2 with a 27* g25 hybrid. It was a little longer, so I put my iron shaft in the hybrid, and it fits the gap perfectly. The control is better too.

As I get older and lose a bit of clubhead speed, my longer irons are hard to hit consistently and the top of my bag is getting a bit tightly bunched.

I currently play 3w, 3&4 hybrid and 5-G plus 54 & 60. Looking at some new irons and am considering dropping my 5i and 4H and replacing both with a 5ish hybrid, either an adjustable 4 or a 5.

When I dumped my 3&4 irons for hybrids 10 years ago, my 5 iron was lower lofted, today my 5 is essentially the 4 I dropped years ago, but is a bit easier to get up.

I will probably experiment this year with a biocell 3w I just bought, maybe dropping the loft a touch, 19 hybrid and something in the 24-25 range rather than 22, drop my 5 iron and see how that works out.

Just not sure what I would add in.

What's wrong with your 5 iron? If you can't hit that club you need to fix your swing and not band aid it with a hybrid. Of course, imho.

I play regularly with a +1 handicap who has 8 iron as his longest iron. In his bag is a 7, 6, 5 etc... hybrid. :He could strike good shots with a 3-iron is he wanted to, but he doesn't want to.

OP, don't use loft as a direct replacement; as stated above, if you want to replace a 5i with a hybrid, you're probably going to want to have a loft closer to your 6i.

Also, the Titleist is very long!

Ultimately it's going to be about the specific distances you get out of your 5i and the new hybrid. You can take your 5i into a retail store and get some RELATIVE distances against the hybrid you're considering. Ultimately tho there is an element of "buy and try" or at least buy and hope the yardages are what you're hoping for in real conditions.

A 909h 24 sits in stock for the rusty first few weeks, if needed. Just pull the 4 iron.
I usually can't wait to pull it, as I start missing a 4 iron or maybe 3

So says the guy whose witb shows a 7 wood. What's the matter dude, can't hit hit a 2 or 3 iron rather than a high lofted fairway wood more commonly found in ladies bags? Time for a swing fix instead of a band aid?

I though golf was a friendly leisure activity. Why would someone chirp somebody for wanting a hybrid to replace a 5 iron? Way to be an a**.

To the OP...hit a bunch of hybrids versus your 6 iron and 4 hybrid and see what works best. I find that hybrids are fairly equivalent to irons for me maybe a half club longer at most.

  • 5 years later...

Reviving an old thread because it showed up in my search. I am replacing my 25* lofted 5 iron with a Titleist 818H1 25* and set it to 26*. The hybrid is much easier to hit for this old mid capper. I may keep the 5 iron for low running shots since I still have room for 1 more club. Next long club is a 22* hybrid.

Ha... I was curious why he was looking at Adams! Granted, my bag is full of Adams. Hybrid still holds up... I’m probably going to pick up a sub 70 utility and figure out some sort of hybrid to round out my bag.

need to figure out my distances first!

Saying In My Humble Opinion after an A(*) comment makes you more of an A(*)

imho

I play a 25h and a 26i they gap well.

if you are wanting to replace your 5i you are looking for a 6h

I’m losing enough distance at 66, I planned on replacing my 5i with a 5h. When I went testing, I hit my favorite 5h about 10 yards longer than my 5i. Both are 25*. So, for now, I’m putting both in the bag. I played Saturday before they shut the state down and am convinced the testing and decision are correct.

I carry 3 ping k15 hybrids 4, 5 and 6 . Yes, they are ugly, but they work like a charm. They replaced my Mizuno 5, 6 and 7 irons. The Mizuno are stronger lofts and the hybrids are weaker so they were not direct # replacements. Took me awhile to figure that out. I'm a high single digit and can do anything with those hybrids. I had the k15 3 hybrid but replaced it with a 7 wood.
