Brutal death march at Ruffled Feathers today as a twosome in between 2 other twosomes. We weren’t being held up much, but it’s cart path only so we were all doing the 50 yard back and forth walks across fairways with a fistful of clubs.

 

Unfortunately, the course isn’t walking friendly considering some of the considerable green-to-tee hikes. I’ll stick with walkable tracks this time of year and early Spring.

The last time I played at Ruffled 2 summers ago, we made the turn in just over 2:20 minutes and when we got to the 12th tee there were 4 groups waiting because of course all of them were going to drive the green. Two guys with our group quit and one of the 4 groups in front of us quit too. We finished in about 5.5 hours and I have never been back.

What time did you tee off? I teed it up around 1, played 1-6 jumped to 10-18 then 7-9 in about 2.5 hours. Obviously, as a single I had a little more freedom to move around.

 

That being said, while it is nice to get out it reminded me of how stupid I am living here. Played decently bunch of pars, 4 birdies, handfull of bogeys.. 47 and windy isn't fun, I need to move. January 20th and Phoenix can't come soon enough.

It's a shame that course plays so slow. I like most of the layout, but it's like getting kicked in the crotch every time I play, which is maybe 1-2 times each year. I just keep trying to find good times to play when the pace is better. It's like I'm in an abusive relationship and can't get out

 

As for the conditions, 47 & breezy isn't ideal, but as a native Chicago guy, I'll take that any time this time of year. This is the latest I've ever played golf, and I can't complain about the weather.

 

That said, I do look forward to relocating somewhere warmer once the kids are out of the nest.

I usually get out at RF around 4pm and have no issue. That is a couple times a week. Now, I would assume that is peak slow time of the day before people get off work and morning rounds finished already. I don't think I have ever played there on the weekend/prime time. I like the course, it has gotten a little beat up with the more play they get which is unfortunate. And a couple of goofy holes.

With the rain and limited maintenance, good conditions might be tough to find. Whisper Creek, the Arboretum, Highland Woods ane Pinecrest all showed up on GolfNow.

Maple Meadows in Wooddale? Not necessarily top-flight, but I think it's a decent track and it has fewer trees than most courses so leaves will be less of an issue.

Palmira was drenched. Since it’s run poorly it wasn’t CPO and, of course, the carts had chewed up large chunks of fairway. Seriously, eliminate every functioning golf cart or force places to actually enforce CPO and the world would be better off. Anyway, with no roll in 34 degree weather it was playing super long so overall I’m happy with how I played. I had quite a few good birdie looks and finally made one on 18 for a 76.

Ace Golf on Irving Park Road and Elston will remove grips. They just use a grip remover, solvent, and a vice but everything comes off clean. It was super cheap too. $2.50 per grip.

Golf galaxy in Vernon hills will pull grips as well

Just know that pulling used grips isn't always a certainty with air, especially if they've been installed a while. Older grips are 50/50 at best in my experience.

Mine are 2 years old. They are a discontinued Lamkin grip with plenty of life left. They are corded which I’ve heard is a little harder to pull.

... Wow, plenty of life after 2 years. I change mine twice a year. I have never blown off grips but pull them all the time and corded grips are actually much easier because they do not stretch like some thinner rubber grips, Lamkin REL 3Gen's for example.

Yeah, some of the super rubbery grips tend to get thin in spots and blow up like a balloon if you catch a tough spot. Corded grips sometimes have the cords "pop" a little bit and the material can be more noticeable on the surface, but they also tend to hold together better when removed.

I have Lamkin Crossline Ace 3Gen Cord grips. They’ve got 50-75 rounds under them with 100 range sessions and it’s like they are brand new.

I forgot to mention that two weeks ago when I was packing my clubs into my travel bag for the trip to Florida I fished 57 golf balls out of my cart bag. WTF? I generally find more balls than I lose, but d*mn. I really should consider contacting the producers of Hoarders.
