Can you win your club championship?

Recommended Posts

I don't have a chance at my club, too many good golfers to win a 27 hole stroke play tournament. I played championship once and finished top 10 of about 20-25 golfers and I played solid golf. Every since I stick to the first flight, at least I don't need the round of my life to win that.

In Quebec they all take place labor day weekend for the most part. I'm not one of the top 10 players in my club. So its not likely....but i usually do OK when i've been able to play

You must be in a good club Jeff, a one handicap and not in the top 10. I bet your CC is a fun one to watch.

I'm a 1.5 right now, and just based on index alone i am in a tie for 15th in the club (just checked). There are 4 people at 1.5, so that means 18 people with indexes of 1.5 or better. It's a pretty good club.

Our course has a tough rating and slope, i think 74/140 or therabouts, and the winning score is generally +5 or better. 2 years ago a guy shot +1 for 3 days, last year i think it was +5

I'm not quite that good, i can do that in fun rounds but under pressure and stroke play unlikely

We just have our "city" championship at the muni where there is a qualifier and the top 15 and last year's champ go into match play. I managed to win it twice but my last win was a few years ago. I was going to play this year but something came up. Played last year but I really had no business playing. Managed to qualify last year but I wasn't much of a match for my opponent.

It takes a bit of luck to win at match play but you also have to play well and smart. When I look back there were a couple matches I won and a couple matches my opponent lost.

Over the years I have won a couple and choked away several more. I am now too crappy now to contend, and I tend to choke. My wins , both involved severe choking on my part. In one of them, I was well under par and had a 5 shot lead. I managed to double two of the last four holes, but won by two. The other one, I bogied the last three holes and won by two also. Now I am at a club that is not that competitive but my game is not sharp enough to compete, even though over par can win it.

Quite honestly no. We have a ton of good players in my club. For example played in a flighted match play event a month ago (6 people per flight, 16 flights, flight winners advance). My index was a 6.2 and I was in the 4th flight. AND this was only the guys who signed up to play. The single-digits went all the way to middle of the 9th flight. Plus we have quiet a few scratch and + caps.

Yes, I've won two in the past. Semis last year. Finals the year before.

Of the 8 guys in last year's match-play bracket at my club. 7 had LI's of at least +1.

Realistically, no. My game isn't consistent enough right now to stand up over 54 holes of stroke play. I would need the perfect storm of my best and several of the top golfers all playing poorly. I'd like my chances much better if was match play.

Still, I can't wait to try!

This! I have been in the match play finals a few years ago and was up 3 before losing 4 of the final 6 holes. I'm dangerous and have a chance if I can take a hole off here and there. I'm too much of a mental midget for 36 holes of stroke play; I am what I am.

A spin off thread from Larrybud's thread about finally winning his CC.

For those of you who play, are you going in with a realistic shot at winning?

Ours is this weekend. It would take a "perfect storm" of events for me to win. The club's best player left last year, and player 1A only plays every so often. Then there are another five to ten others who would be in the mix, with me maybe being at the very tail end of that grouping. I would have to get pretty hot to pull it off. For reference, I'm a five which is the break point for championship flight.

How about all of you out there, expectations?
[/quote]

I had been through 25 years of club championship events and my closest at winning was 2010 when i came within 1 shot which even to me was kind of shocking because i had never been within 5 shots of the champ before 2010 or after that either so that year must have been a anomoly ..... there were years before 2010 where i had played much better than that season but it never equated to playing the same in that event .... i just had always just figured it was due to choking at the moment of truth ..... bad drive ..... 3 putting from 5 feet ... ...or something inbetween

I have only been a member at two courses. One when I was in high school through college. I either won or finished top 3 every year.
I was a member before my kids were born, I won it 4 out of 5 years.

Since my kids were born I have taken two 2+ year time frames off, the first was three years from when my first daughter was born. My second was a year old before I played again. Just a smidge under three years. The second time was when I went through my divorce and right after it, I didn't touch a club for almost 2 years, I had more important things on my mind.

Now that my kids are older and I am playing more often my swing is back and my last 15 rounds produce a handicap somewhere right around +1. This year(tracking it best I can online) my handicap has dropped from a 3.8 to a .7. So I may try and join a club and get back into tournament golf. Last tournament rounds were in 2011 in the Georgia Amateur and the Georgia Pub Links.

As as 14? Pffft... no. I've never even broken 80 before, and the winner is usually no more around 148 the two day stroke play tournament. If I had my two best ever back-to-back rounds I'd be looking at something like 165-170, or at least 20 over par.

Thankfully my club championship is flighted, and there's a net and gross division in each flight. So I play because I definitely have a chance to win my flight.

We play 36 holes first day (two courses) and 18 holes next. And btw we do not have flights so I really have no chance, but it will be fun, I hope.

Just as an update with one more day before ours. After my last two rounds I don't think I could win our fourth flight. At this point I'm seriously considering not even playing. I just don't see the point of increasing the frustration in a tournament setting. I guess we'll see how tomorrow goes. :fie:

Yep, 4 times(1987, 1988, 1993 & 1994) with 6 runner-ups, my last in 2012, where I had a 36 hole total of 139(Par 140), falling 1 stroke short to a college Player's 138-

Championship Flight goes one medal round for the low 31, immediate past Club Champ gets a bye into a 32 Man Match Play down to the Final Foursome, where we play a 36 hole medal final-

I've made the Final Foursome 17 times, and probably what I'm proudest of is the fact that I've never come in 4th in 17 trips. Along with 4 Championships & 6 runner-ups I had 7 third place finishes.

Don't ask my why that meant so much to me cuz I mean hell, that year the foursome is the top four for the tournament however I was just determined that I would never finish last in the foursome, lol.

You Gents know that I've got issues, hahaha-

Possibly the net division, but I would have to play my a$$ off. I'm a low single digit hdcp, so it would be hard to beat the double digit hdcp players that sandbagged to get their hdcp. The gross division would be basically impossible. We have several Web.com pros and several +4-+6 hdcps. I would have to shoot under par every round to beat them and that doesn't happen often.

That's a heck of a record Richard. I hope to at least make it to the top 8 this year, but it will be tough. I know of several +4-+5 guys playing as well as a dozen or so scratch or better. I'm a 3, but trending downwards. I'm a better match play player, because I make a fair number of birdies. It's the others that kill me in stroke play. Lol

We play 54 holes of stroke play. There are probably 15 guys that could win with 5 or 6 having the best chance. Our members bet on us like horses. I will get money bet on me so yeah I guess me and some others think I can but I will have to execute and play my best golf to do it because who ever wins will be the guy that made the least mistakes. It is more a battle of attrition and out lasting the other guys. Just keep plugging and making pars. The winner will shoot somewhere between 8 under and even par depending. I'd take 4 under right now and see if it wins.

Not a chance. I am happy if I manage to shoot mid to high 80s twice again (ours is two rounds medal play from the back tees), and I am always surprised how far up the table that puts me, as many of the mid and high single digits at our club always seem to have a really bad score in one of the rounds. I am worse overall, but more consistent
But for the 4 or 5 really good kids (15 to 20 years old) in our club, it is more about two sub 70 rounds, and nobody can keep up with that.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.
