What was in your bag 30 years ago.

Recommended Posts

As I look at my current golf bag('s) I see 2 sets of clubs that I'm sure a lot of you vets were playing 30 years ago. I see Ping Eye 2 woods and irons in one and Hogan Speedslot laminated woods and 73' Apex irons in the other. And I'll tell you, I've had more fun this year playing the "old" stuff. Even play better with them, so much more that I sold my Speedblade iron set. Nothing like going driver, driver, 5 iron on a Par 5. So I ask what were you guys playing 30 years ago. Myself, well, I was 5 going on 22 probably banging around a rolled up sock with a wiffle ball bat pretending to be Pete Rose or Dave Parker without the slightest inkling I'd wash out at baseball and pick up golf at 25.

Ping eye 2 irons, red dot, my first set (they were stolen the first summer I had them, bought another set the following season) Mac M85 driver, 3 wood, Louisville golf 4 wood, Wilson R90 sand wedge and a Bullseye putter.

My first metal wood was not till around '89 if I remember right. It was a Taylor Made 13 degree spoon. I'd kill a lot of worms with that thing now. I loved that Mac driver.

Driver 10.5 Taylor Made Burner 2.0
Ping 3 and 7 woods
Component 5 and 6 hybrids
and 8 and 9 irons (SGI)

Scratch 47 degree PW

Alpha SW

All graphite shafts
Putter: uh, I have a few

Hmm, I can't remember what set I had when I joined this forum (another thread), but I DO remember my bag in 11/1985. That's a tell isn't it?

Macgregor mid 60's TA693 driver with the solid red insert, a ca. 1954 H & B 3 wood blond with solid red insert and a 1980s Powerbilt Citation 5 wood.

Irons were the reissued '83 - '84 Mac Colokroms 3-P, SW Wilson Staff with my trusty Ping AYD (bought new in 1976).

The irons lasted until 1989 when TA 845s replaced them (most of the time) the woods stayed in until '93 and the putter lasted till '96. I played the Colokroms from time to time straight through the '90s sharing bag time with the TA's.

I really loved that setup.

Ladies "Lady Campbell" 1&3 Laminated woods, matching 3,5,7,9 irons, and a Walter Hagen brass small mallet putter, all in a dark green Atlantic vinyl bag.

No, these are not clubs I need to get to relive my youth.

These were in my bag in 1985.

Toney Penna Driver and 3-Wood
Hogan Apex (1977) 1 iron thru E
Wilson R-20 Sand Wedge
MacGregor Nicklaus/GeoLow Putter

I still have all of these clubs and could tee up with them tomorrow if I wanted to re-live the past.

Hogan Apex 2 irons
Wilson R90 sand wedge (still have it in closet)
Powerbilt persimmon Driver with brass back weight. Loved that driver. Took long time to settle on good driver. Was a good find.
Daiwa persimmon 3 wood
Some old Wilson laminated 5 wood with aluminum shaft my Dad let me use.
Went back and forth putter wise. Remember I had Ping Pal, Ping B60 an 8802, a Bullseye LaFemme... I remember in those days putters were sorta community property between myself and a few friends but mostly stayed with the Pings.

My set as an 18 year old in 1985 was a Petron Metal driver, Petron Laminate 4-wood (awful club if I recall correctly), John Letters Gary Player Mark 4 Master Model blades 3-9, John Letters Powermaster 18/70 Sand Iron, and I think the putter was a Palm Springs 7 (Bullseye style). I still have the sand iron and the Putter ... only the putter was bought new (£25!) .. everything else second-hand.

The woods got replaced with Callaway Warbirds at some point in the mid 90s, and the irons lasted until 1996 when I bought some used but mint Maruman Conductor 31-EXs. These saw excellent service until 2011, at which point I joined golfwrx and discovered that I needed 800 more clubs ...

not exactly 30 years ago (I officially started playing golf in 1988):

Browning laminated 4 or 5-wood
Slazenger Ben Hogan Precision 4-Exploder
Acushnet Bullseye putter

"Upgraded" to a cheap set of MacGregor Golden Bears 2 years later (choosing the cheap MacGregor's over a set of BH Redlines or Apex (can't remember which one, probably the Redlines), or actually my parents choose the MacGregors as they were half the price of the Hogan's). MacGregor's got replaced by my current set (and now I am thinking about reshafting the Slazengers to put those back into play (and I just put an offer in to someone selling a set similar to the one I am playing now (which would make it my 4th back-up set...)).

1985:

Wilson laminate 1-3-4 woods, 3-PW irons. Bought as a set in 1975.
Northwestern chipper, bought in 1975 also.
Spalding TPM putter, bought in 1985.
MacGregor tan small staff bag with fake lizard grain trim, bought with the Wilson clubs and a dozen balls, for $146 total.
Ajay pull cart, bought in 1976.

A nice kit, couldn't break 90 if my life depended on it, back then.

1985 -- This was the first time I ever played. The clubs I used would have been whatever I rented at the resort course in Venezuela! I think I played one more time that year with my SIL's clubs. I didn't play again until '89 or so at my college reunion with another set of borrowed clubs.

I bought my first set not long after that and they are what comprise my vintage bag in my signature link -- used Spalding Executive woods and Precision II Dictator BeCu irons. Those clubs got used at most once a year and sat in the basement up until this year I only started to play golf regularly in 2007 and at that with a modern set of clubs that my wife bought me.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Lego, a handful of soil, some biscuits and maybe a worm or two.

Loving this so far. Started reading it, and was thinking this was an internet show-off session and there was no way everyone could have had such nice clubs... but there were a lot of nice clubs back then eh?!

As a comparison, Grouville senior would have had a set of Wilson Fluid Feels, Cleveland Classic driver (which I now have), non-descript "Europa" five wood which I never remember him hitting, an Australian blade one iron which I remember him hitting a lot, and a Golden Goose putter, maybe replaced around this time with the Anser he has not been further than about ten feet from ever since.
