I always figured that you made contact with the ball on the insert (unless you had the dreaded heel or toe strikes) - so, whatever was "behind" the insert didn't matter much. FWIW - my peers always admired my woods, and how I used them. They called me the white Calvin Peete -

These were refinished after each season growing up, and a couple of reshafts, as they started to show wear from the bag. We didn't have those new-fangled, carpeted bags way back then. Had me 2 bags: a green with gold trim Hogan Sun-Jet (one of Big Stu's favorites) and a PGA Staff bag - cherry red, to match my Camaro. (Gotta be color coordinated).

Haven't hit 'em here yet, but have made great progress at this golf course. Opening the clubhouse - which has been closed for many years - this week, with limited lunch menu. Taking baby steps towards dinners and breakfasts.

I'm enjoying this almost as much as playing. Reviving an old course what might have closed, and having the support of the 2 communities near me.

So I walk into PIA the other day, they have a set of MP29s (2 through SW) for $49.99. I traded in a set of Zevo lefties I salvaged out of the dumpster and they gave me about $32.00 in store credit, so got the whole set for about $18.00. Only the SW has rust on the face, otherwise in decent shape for Mizunos. I will post pics when I get them done up for eBay.

They had a nice set of Ben Hogan BH-5 Offset irons for like $49.99 that I left behind - I might trade some more stuff in for those.

I suspect the pattern for donation will change , or had been changed over the new tax law.

When I was preparing for the 2018 return, I kept running into warning of maximum deduction met.

The volume for donation will drop, when there is cap for the benefit to donate. This probably will also effect the new equipment sales since more older equipment hangs around a bit longer.

An even bigger problem is the change in the standard deduction. By increasing it as they have, fewer people can realize the tax benefits of donations, and may no longer do so.

What a way to move the economy ahead...… less donation, less sale in new equipment, maybe we'll create less landfill material for the better ?

But...….. we're golfers, so we're all supposed to be doing great and these changes in tax law shouldn't bother us one little bit.

I had already seeing signs of a big slow down in the golf industry and this Spring there are promotions and offerings for reduced green fees ( after the fees were hiked up, again from the previous year ). My advice to the managing companies is to drop the drawers all the way if you want to do it and get the money while there is the opportunity. Giving supposed discount with restrictions and undesirable tee time slots will only keep the status -quo which is a lot of empty spots on the tee sheet. Once it's gone, it's gone, Can't recover yesterday's tee time and can't balance the lose by raising the green fees . again.

The general population of golfers are not all well to do folks with gazillions in the bank account. Middle class has been put down in the last decade and won't recover any time soon.

The marginalization of the middle class started much longer ago than the past decade, had its genesis in the 80s.

But, that's really a topic for another thread. LOL

It's fairly cynical, but it's surprising how many people won't make donations, such as old golf clubs, without the financial incentives attached. It's a conversation I've heard several times over the past decades.

They one were one of those 'you get all the clubs out of the box, sets' - junk, essentially. But I tossed in a Bazooka driver as well (also salvage, and a lefty). They were out of lefties and there are a lot of lefty golfers here in my state.

But yeah, roughly $32 in trade - $18 cash. Nice set of Mizuno blades.

Plus the younger generation is not into the saving mode like those whom had went through hard times. Disposable is what they're used to practice. From the baby diaper they use when they were born to the water bottle these days. No wonder we're running out of space to bury garbage.

I believe my wife was one of the last few in her generation to use cloth diaper on our kids. We're going to quite buying milk and juice with laminated paper carton fo containers now since the carton container is not accepted as recyclable material.

Inflation also hits the thrift stores...…….. LOL, for pricing the merchandise which cost them zilch.

It's going to get worse, we had been playing the numbers game to delay the bust of bubbles, but not likely for much longer. Something will happen within a few decades.

I lucked in to a set of 1964 Wilson Staff Irons and woods today at one of my favorite Goodwills for $7.99 total. 2 through Pitching Wedge and 1-4 wood. The individual iron is the 7. All original leather grips still that are still tacky. This was after finding a 3-8 and 10 iron, MT by MacGreggor, then spending about 30 minutes trying to find the 9 with no luck at a different store. That made this find feel even better.
