i have to say that it’s good to see a real competition this year at the masters. none of the 3 guys at the top are going to give an inch. pedal to the metal.

sad when even japanese enjoy fine southern cuisine and atmosphere more than some people from the northern states of aggression. 🙂

Not sure what you mean by this.  But we enjoy BBQ up here in the northern states.  Lots of joints around.  Jack's Roadside started with a food truck parked on a vacant lot.  Now's got himself a restaurant half mile up the road, along side Dixie Highway, in little 'ol Davisburg Michigan.   Does BBQ right in my estimation.  

 

 

And I enjoy bluegrass/Americana music.  This kid continues to do alright for himself, a survivor and native Michiganian.  Being from 'down south' isn't a prerequisite to appreciate the genre.  Appears that Del approves.

A friend of mine on another site told me about the Classics section here. Some how I hooked up with @Conrad1953 and we had a lot in common being truck drivers. He along with @Fellaheen51 turned me on to the Old Confessions threads. After that bad split Rad PMed me and told me about the Grille and invited me over.

In all my time here I only received one warning. August Golf (Augie RIP) and myself were discussing Macgregor FC-4000 irons. Those irons have the black ceramic coating on the faces. We referred them as the color of their face Macs. That is common slang for them in the Carolinas and the Classic World. We got a warning. I reached out to a mod at the time who is also a classic club guy. We got the warnings rescinded. Come to find out the person who reported us knew squat about classic clubs and was browsing and reported us. There was nothing racial implied on our end and no intent meant. No harm no fowl

Help you out Stu with a pic of the FC's.  Found them all rusty and covered with dirt, in a back shed at a Habitat for Humanity store Up North.  Buck per.  Didn't know much about them, the Classic section and yourself gave me the story.  Gussied them up just because.  Darn near broke my wrists when a 7 iron dug into the ground and stopped.  They were lookers though, in a "they don't make them like they use to" sort of way.

 

 

Should have hung onto them just to salvage the splendid leather grips.

i believe in simplicity starting when you take your stance. the thinking part is reading the break and elevation, then deciding on the start line. the start line depends on the speed, so that’s still in the thinking bucket.

 

good putters use a line on the ball, the line already on the ball, or even the logo.

 

after that, i prefer getting out of the thinking bucket and align the face or line(s) square to the start line. once that’s done, you’re done

 

the only thing left is the feel, the intuition of speed. that’s it. your vision goes blurry about about alignment.

 

poor putters second guess the line or read while over the ball. don’t trust your eyes, that’s why you used a line.

poor putters take too long of a backstroke. good putters are shorter.

most people over read right to left breaks and under read left to right breaks. but that was back in the thinking bucket.

poor putters don’t adjust for speed when the putt has a fair amount of break. ball travels along a longer path.

 

if you can make free throws, throw darts, throw a beer can in the trash without thinking, you can hit the putt close to the speed you want.

 

you aren’t going to make ‘em all. speed is all feel. you don’t think feel, you feel feel.

 

can't think of any better drill to get in touch with your inner child feel than hitting a few 10-15' putts while looking at the hole. it's like a calibration for feel that day or for the greens that day. not thousands, just a few.

 

grip types, sizes, type of grip with the hands, etc. is a giant bucket that only the player can decide by trial and error.

 

 

 

Well said as SOP for you Solly. I will throw my .02 in FWIW. As usual for me this only pertains to me and may or may not work for anyone else.

I used to be a good putter. After my accident I have became streaky as heck. With all the putters I have I have tried maybe too many combinations of putters and club grips plus hand position. We did find out that more than likely due to my accident and maybe age I have a dissociative eye thing going. That has been confirmed by my Neurologist and an eye doctor. During my accident I did have a bad concussion along with my other injuries. I went to the line on the ball some time ago. It seems to help. Another issue due to the permanent nerve damage in my back I have lost feel too. I was always a feel and instinct putter and player. I had been putting with the Broom Stick for a while due to my back hurting. Now as far as structural my back seems to be healed up as long as I do not push the issue too much. I had went back to my beloved Rusty Scotty with mixed results. I had been practicing some in the house with an old Forged Wilson 600 special with what ever stock grip that was on it. That grip looks like an old Lamkin slightly oversized but wrapped with gauze. I tool it out on the putting green the other week and putted well with it and it has great feel and I like the way it sits. I took it out the last day of one of our tournaments and putted lights out with it that day. The next play day I took the Scotty out and did not putt as well with it. 

Now we had rain Thursday so we did not play and I did not go out. I did not play yesterday due to it being CPO. I did try to practice putting some because our range was closed. The wind was bad here as in the Masters. Our putting green is exposed and with the grass being in the transition phase the greens are sort of sparse and slick. No need to really practice because on gusts the ball would not stay still. i went back home and watched the struggle at the Masters. 

Today the wife and I are going to play the small Par3 up by the Airport and right on the ocean. Those greens are small with much undulation. They are fast anyhow. I am doing an experiment I pulled out an old Macgregor Ironmaster I have had since I was 14 years old. Just a bare balls old putter with a real leather wrapped grip. My goal is to see how my feel goes there because I know with the ocean winds those greens will be lightning fast. I am going to try to go back to MY basics of being instinctive instead of mechanical. I have also been experimenting with left hand low. 

I got the idea of doing it how ever I deem to do it by watching the telecast yesterday. The announcers were talking about Theegala changing his grip sometimes twice a hole. They said he was searching which I can relate too. But then I came to my conclusion that he was doing whatever he thought at the time that would get the ball into the hole. I am going to mess around on those lines today since this is a fun round with my wife and the score does not matter. LOL I even have my 1955 Hogan Precision irons in the bag 7 thru 9 irons no wedges since the old 9 iron is only 45*. And of course I will play a balata and wound Dunlop ball. 

That old Ironmaster holds a special place in my heart. A guy named Kenny gave it to me back when I was 14 or so. That thing was a no miss special for about 3 months. Kenny was also the man who instilled the love of Macgregor clubs in me. He was a long time City of Charlotte Fireman and we lost him to cancer in like 1990. So it will be a fun day. I am laughing now thinking Kenny may be looking down and saying "Good on the old putter but WTH? on the Hogan irons." I just got into one of my moods and got set on playing the Hogans. BTW of course I call the putter "Kenny"

Saw a commercial yesterday that reminded me of you. It was a Workday commercial that always has Billy Idol in it. Yesterday they had a drummer also beating on a table and he had massive art work like you do. Do not know who the drummer was though. Those commercials are always stressing the misuse of the word "Rockstar" The funniest one was with Rory with Billy saying "Billy Idol just stole your golf cart" as he hauls buggy away

Yep those are 62 or 63. I have 2 sets of them. One was the Old Man's which he got in 62 when he was a Mac Staffer. I grew up playing those. Only irons he ever held on to. In fact he played his last round with them in the fall before he passed the next May. The other set our friend @stickfish sent to me free some 5 or 6 years ago now.

Hahaha seen that one. That's Travis Barker largely known from Blink 182.

 

He's a stellar player. I don't really care much for the bands he's been in but super respect for him.

i’m the lone ranger at home. the wife is from the pnw, so i have to endure disapproving contorted  smiles when i eat, let alone mention things like bbq, biscuits and gravy, hush puppies, pecan pie, pimento cheese sandwiches, etc. she thinks they’re all made from roadkill or possum.

 

her idea of a masters snack is a single, tiny canapé in a small italian crystal bowl, sitting on a small gold embossed french plate on top of another larger charging plate with a tiny silver lid on top. served on a tray with a linen napkin perfectly arranged in a ruby encrusted napkin ring. and the appropriate wine at the appropriate temperature in the appropriate glass.

 

and if i said that’s not enough, she’d recommend an olive. one olive. no wonder she weighs 110 lbs.

 

she would be horrified if she knew that i really wanted to watch the masters in my inner bubba. unshaven, in my underwear, a t-shirt, eating a big old bbq sandwich and onion rings.

I am young enough that I don’t remember golf Before Ping, and I’ve played Pings of some variety my whole life. I remember the first time I hit my buddy’s Hogan Personal (I think) irons I had the same experience. Ian Woosnam type divot, ouch, only it did not start in front of the ball…..😂…..hey man give me that Eye 2 back, please!

Agreed. I expect Morikawa and Cam Smith to be real contenders as well. Battle tested, but I am not sure I trust Morikawa’s putting as the surfaces get crispier.

I'm a line user. To my simple way of thinking it solves half the putting equation by establishing a start line and immediate feedback on how well you strike the putt. I putted without one for 35 years and was a decent putter with a consistent miss left. One day the tech/fitter at a SAM Putt Lab session asked me to try a few putts with a line on the ball. With the ball's line properly aimed on the 12 ft. putt it looked like I was aimed a half cup left and said as much. He asked me to trust the line and concentrate on the speed. I listened to him, stroked the putt, and after holding my gaze a second or so on the impact point I looked up to see the ball roll the last 3 ft or so end over end until landing dead center of the cup. I've been a believer ever since.

 

When guys ask me how to adjust to the line I have them do a simple drill without a hole involved. Go to your practice green and find a 10-12 foot straight (preferably uphill) putt that will stop at the fringed edge of the green. Place your putter head cover in line with your straight putt about a foot past the edge of the green. Using 3 balls, take your time and align them vertically, 6-inches apart, as well as you can to the head cover. On each ball, do your pre-shot thing, step in and align the line on the ball with your putter (make a "T" with the line and a square blade), and focus on delivering the center of the putter blade to the equator of the ball. This last part is what makes the ball roll end over end and is honestly the most important thing to learn. Speed and distance control is A LOT easier to learn. Most folks don't have the patience to learn this end over end thing. But once you can learn this skill, you're well on your way to becoming a better putter and a better scorer.

I'm a pretty good putter and I wish I could practice what you just explained. My problem is I have the attention span of a gnat so the simpler I keep my putting routine, the better off I am.😂

I'll have had 39 years of matrimonial bliss a week from tomorrow.  Certainly cannot lay claim to knowing any more or less than the rest of y'all when it come to this business.  Usually it's better to keep my mouth shut, acquiesce, and go with the flow to keep the peace.  (No revelation there.)  But once in a great while, a "wait a minute sister" moment occurs.  And I play my hand.  Not going to kowtow 100% of the time.  

 

Wasn't attempting to offer advice.  Although in retrospect, sorta reads as such.  We've been around long enough to know how to play our own individual game.  

 

Don't slob up the davenport with sauce and suds while watching the Masters.

That whole clothing line is pretty bad IMO. It just does not fit.

This drill sounds fantastic. I am definitely going to give it a run.

 

I especially like your attention to detail regarding the "T". Stan Utley's book is very much set putter to target line with dominant hand (so right for righties) and form grip and stance from there. If you listen to Faxon, who is a well known committed line user, he doesn't even set the face. He just settles in comfortably and pays no attention to the face. We all know Tiger aligns the putter face open. Personally, I like the T like you mention, just for peace of mind.
