I maintain anyone who talks about bad basketball or boring play in the NBA hasn’t watched more than 5 min of basketball in decades. It is great play and entertainment and is as good or better than it has ever been.

As a sport, I love basketball.  I think it is a great sport to play.  I think the folks who excel at it are tremendous athletes as well.  Here is why I don't watch it as opposed to other sports like soccer, hockey, golf, and even baseball if I had my druthers though it's laughable the coaches wear game day uniforms.

Basketball and football are two sports I struggle with as a viewer.  The sport is too coach-centric and takes too long.  In most every sport the decisions are made by the player, and even though the decisions get more important as time winds down, they rarely go the coach.  The players decide the outcome in crunch time, not the coach.  I would love basketball on TV if each team was given one timeout a half and a running clock for fouls in the last 2 minutes of each half.  But I don't need, or want, to see some 50 year old screaming over pumped in 80's pop music while drawing lines on a white erase board 5 times in those 2 minutes.

My sports viewing is pretty limited, here’s what I fit in when I can.

Love the NBA. I don’t watch college hoops.

Love Clemson football. I don’t watch the NFL. Time constraints mean I seldom watch college FB other than Clemson.

Love pro soccer. Premier League, Scottish Premiership, Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga, love it all. Again, time constraints mean I mostly fit in parts of games here and there while doing something else.

Minimal interest in baseball, and didn’t grow up with hockey so no knowledge and limited interest.

And yes, my sports viewing is full of conflicts. Pro basketball, not college. College FB, not pro.

Not following the NFL makes me a straight up pariah round these parts! The power move is an empty golf course when the stillers are playing. 🙂

I will agree, if I have to see a sport live, it's going to be an NHL game.  It is just so much faster, physical, and nuanced than it looks on TV.  But, the rules are a little difficult to grasp if you don't know them prior to going.  Particularly the offside rule.  I have had friends say they didn't enjoy it because they never knew when it was going to stop since they didn't know offside, icing, etc.  Back when I was still in PGH we had season tickets to the Pens from 89-94, so how could you not enjoy Lemieux, Jagr, Coffey, Francis, et al.?  But apparently it's possible.

Second best was an EPL game ManU v Charlton, in CHarlton.  Charlton got roped, but I was absolutely astonished how much quicker it is live than on TV.  Night and day.  After the game we were advised to tuck into a pub while the police on horses escorted the ManU fans to the trains that were waiting to get them out of dodge.

Not super hard, just the puck or the carrier has to be the first to enter the zone, no cherry picking. I suspect they just don’t want to get it. Skating also isn’t something people can much relate to, like pushing off to the side to go forward.

Line changes in actual playing time is interesting, you can see how gassed they get but they have to clear the zone first before getting to the bench for a breather.

I grew up playing so it was never difficult for me, but when trying to explain it when the guys are moving 20 mph and the puck is moving 70 mph the rules get a little flighty to the unknowing who are just there to see the game and see what the fuss is about.  Of course, beyond hoping to see Mike Lange who was, and perhaps always will be, the ultimate PGH sportscaster and/or listen to Vince Lascheid pound out Drunken Sailor or Three Blind Mice on the organ when there was a call he didn't like.

Used to be like that in Charlotte when the Panthers were playing. Here it can be like that if CCU is playing at home. I do not play golf on Sunday anymore but they tell me Sundays are slow at my course in Pro football season. Saturday shootouts can be limited fields especially if CCU USC or Clemson is at home.

Me personally I do not keep up with any of it not even NASCAR

Put me in the camp of not understanding hockey rules. But we do go to minor league games on occasion and I can certainly appreciate the speed and skill. Just don’t always know what exactly happened!

The NBA?  I’m a basketball junkie. I love both watching and playing (at 60, im still playing, although on a timeout until the “good” knee feels better). But heres the thing for me Along with being a junkie, I’m EXTREMELY old school when it comes to hoops. And I don’t like where the NBA has taken basketball. The blatant traveling and carrying are just too much for me. No one should be able to go from half court to the basket on one dribble. It’s all one on one and 3 point shooting now.

And I’dreally like to know when a “gather” became a thing.

That’s all well and good if that’s what someone likes, it’s just not my cup of tea. Until the extreme overkill of Caitlyn Clark this year I watched a lot women’s college. They still run sets, picks off the ball, old school stuff.

Just a matter of personal preferences. I watch a lot less of the college men now because it’s become similar.

About as bad as we went to a fight and a dirt track race broke out.

Back in the 90s we had like 6 or 8 dirt tracks in upstate SC and in the lower part of NC. Most of them ran on Saturday night I think like 2 ran on Friday night. We had a local site sorta like here on all the tracks. This one guy did a fight report and it was detailed and hilarious actually had fights and also arrests for DUI etc connected to the tracks. He would do a quick recap and then if you were so inclined the details

Oh yea. Can confirm.  You didn’t go up on the hill at riverside unless you had backup , or a badge and gun.  🤣.   Absolutely a rough deal.

Thank you.  This is me to a T.  At one point in my life bball was the top thing I was interested in.  But I too like the old game.  Big men inside and the post  game.  Now it’s just a bunch of 7 foot “ guards “ throwing  up 3s. If they’d call fouls on moving screens  , traveling and carrying , alot of the nonsense goes away.  And personally I’d like to see the flagrant abolished , and I’d love to see it go back to two hands on the ball means offensive man has freedom to swing the ball or elbows to clear a path.  I was taught  that offensive man can’t foul a guy with two hands on the ball.  Short of a kick I guess. You’ll get thrown out for it.  Pretty soft in my opinion.

My son & I have this discussion all the time. I too prefer 90's style ball. His argument is that it's tougher to play defense with new rules and they have to be better athletes & smarter about it. He has a point but it's why at times a game looks like a shooting exhibition. Great team play and all that coordination can still be seen in the better though. I've watched 100's of bad games as an AAU/ NCAA Dad and when there's talent that is well coached is still a great treat to take in. Yet, for me it's not unlike Golf, wish we could revert to 3 piece wound, steel drivers & spiked up greens. But things move on. The raw talent in Pro ball is very deep, it draws players from around the world with a maybe the biggest participation pool of any game. The guys from Europe are really well mentored, it's a bit a shame, youth ball in US is not as well-disciplined as theirs's in teaching team play.
