I just read the US dropped out of the top 20 happiest places this year.  Finland was number one again.  There is a warning so I will say nothing about why I think we're out.  During my brief stint in Helsinki as a tourist I can say the folks were so nice and polite.  On a weekend afternoon there were comedy troupes on stages and buskers, etc. throughout the park by the hotel.  If we asked to try something they would try to give it to us free of charge, it was just a good place.  Don't think I could do the winters, but really a great place to visit.

how can you not be happy in a place that has a word (Kalsarikänni) for staying home in your underwear and drinking?

we haven’t been to a restaurant in quite awhile. just don’t feel like driving downtown to some of the good ones. we’ve been disappointed so many times at the others.

 

ordered lasagne and a small side salad from a place close by last night. i went and picked it up. we split one meal not because were cheap, it’s enough food for us.

 

it used to be about $20 6-8 months ago and pretty good.

last night it was $33.

portions were about 1/3 less

salad was pathetic with some weeds like i have growing in my backyard

recipe was different and bland

 

and worst of all, i had to camp out in the bathroom starting about 4 this morning. i know, too much information, but what the hell?

So I know you guys are dying for a mini me update.  ( sarcasm but I’ll post  it anyway !) 

 

 

The boy is really hitting a sweet spot of the season.   And fingers crossed has remained injury free.  Saturday night at a big regional meet in Columbia he broke out of the 4.50s in the mile.  To run 4.49.  Last night back at home for a meet he ran 4th overall in the 800m behind his two senior teammates and rival schools seniors star.  He ran another personal record at 2.08 for the 800m.  The 3 leaders just in front of him went 2.06 2.07 and change.  So he was right on them.  Then.  His 4x400 relay team pulled out the hammer and destroyed everyone.  They ran a personal best by 15 seconds.  To finish 1st and win the meet overall.  They went 3.28 .  Thats 4 boys doing 1/4 mile each. 
 

im getting to the point that non emotional me is having a hard time , at times with his success. Im just a bag of fluff web in watching him grow.   The best thing on earth is seeing hard work pay.  There is nothing  better.  And he’s gotten a sniff of it now. And I already saw the drive ramp up.  He’s just a sophomore.   And he now has 12 D1 D2 coaches following his strava and NCSA accounts where his workouts and races are posted.  He got invited to wake forest to camp this summer  and yesterday morning he got an invite to western Carolina to camp.  These are no pay invites.   Meaning he’s their guest.  Most of the campers pay through the nose to be there.    This week was spring signing day for seniors going to college to compete.  5 male and 3 female members of his team signed full rides … two of them are boys that he was pushing in the 800m last night.  I’m simply beside myself excited for him.  
 

The cherry on top.  He says to me yesterday .  “ I want to go where the strongest biology  lab is in this area.  I’ve narrowed it down , and I just talked to my counselor about applying for academic money if i dont get a  running offer from the school /s I want”.
 

She told him that from her experience, on his path ,he’d have no issue getting acceptance or money.    The kid finished All the math the school offers this year ( 10th grade and AP calculus was the top )  .  He’s not at all , relying on the chance of a physical driven scholarship.   Thats his backup.  He brought me paperwork to sign last night after the meet , for him to signup to take math and a biology lab at the USC Spartanburg university campus next year on a dual enrollment program they have. Where he’d go to a university course in the morning and come back to his high school for classes afternoons.  Who am I to say no ?? 
 

what bothers me is this.  Where the hell did he get this ?  Certainly wasn’t from this dumb guy.  I haven’t helped him with homework since 6th grade.  I’ve literally followed a path of opposites for him.  Telling him what I did wrong. And to do the opposite.  
 

I can’t wait to see what he becomes.  And I cast a wide net on that guess. Anything from farmer to ophthalmic surgeon.  
 

sorry again. I held it in as long as I could 🤣. If you knew the backstory on this kid. You’d understand that this isn’t a simple brag.  It’s more a testimony for what is possible. A couple here know it. Some know small pieces.  But it’s a true miracle story.  And one where following your gut has led to the greatest blessing in my life or wildest imagination.  I might type it all into a book one day.  But for now I don’t  have the energy to do so here. And it would take months.  
 

I better go back to work.  Before I get the hammer for longest novella of the week.

The wife has been working hard all week and wanted a steak tonight so I booked the best place in town which is good but not super high end. 

I have no doubt that with the wife and I, daughter and Granddaughter (who at 5 can destory an 8 oz filet) it will be well over $150 maybe $175. If I have a couple of extra dirty martinis it could push past that, but you know I don't really care. Not that we have a lot of money, but I am still working and that's why, so we can enjoy a night out and not break the bank.

Our main league and the Spin off league have 7:30 through 9:00 tee times Monday through Friday. If I do not choose to play the league then I can go off at first light if I desire. Our Tournament dates are set up one year in advance and if we need more tee times like we did this week then the other tee times are pushed back. With my membership which I paid up front it works out to basically $100 a month. Which for me works out in like 3 1/2 rounds at local rates for 18 and a cart. I average 3 to 5 rounds a week in good weather not counting the Shootout which I do not play much anymore. So really a no brainer for me

We only have certain places we eat out anymore. Most of those are locally owned and operated. Yesterday morning the wife was working and the coffee maker did not come on WTH??? The external timer was on and so I clicked the switch on the coffee maker itself. Fire flew out the side and it popped. Of course I unplugged it and in my best firefighter training promptly threw it into the yard. I could have cranked up one of the old school pots but I said to heck with it. I was out early since we had a league tournament. I went to the Waffle House. Had a Cheeseburger bowl and coffee with a plain Jane waffle on the side. Cost me $19. Ok I paid and tipped the waitress $5 you know it ain't her fault. I said never again. I can go to the Circle K and get a big Bacon Cheeseburger, bag of chips and my senior coffee for under $10. I can also go to Kroger and buy some fruit for a lot less than that and then get my .99 Coffee for Under $10 too. The wife and I can eat at the Moose club and eat good for the both of us for under $20 not including the tip. I hate it because I love the Waffle House but no more. I am not cheap but neither am I going to throw money around

Basically it is a chopped up hamburger patty grilled with cheese on top of hashbrowns in a bowl with no bread, It is good but man it has gotten too expensive. All the chain restaurants have gotten too expensive for the amount and quality of food anymore

I play at a nice semi-private course and my annual membership is around $2500, 10% less if you pay by mid January which is what I do. In my neck of the woods it is a great value as the course is well cared for. Members can book tee times 10 days in advance, the public 7 days. We are treated very well.

 

I rent my apartment above the Proshop from the golf course and joke that I have the most expensive club storage, but it has all the perks including bedroom, kitchen and living room.

 

Today was our usual Hickory Friday. We were scheduled to go at 10:20 but the rain was expected to last until 11:30. No problem, we just rescheduled to after 11:30. It was cloudy for most of the front nine, then the sun came out. The only negative was that I finished out of the money in our $3 game.
