Worst one time PGA tour winner ever

Instead of worst 1 time winner IMO some other phrasing should be used. That said I'll go with Fred Wadsworth. Won the 1986 Southern Open as a Monday qualifier. Mini Tour player. Took his two year exemption and played 70 events at the end of 1986 through 1988. Played his heart out but the overall numbers aren't pretty. I wonder if Pat Burke (rangersgoalie) knows him. He played in more than a few events when he did not have a tour card. Over parts of 19 seasons he played 143 events, made 39 cuts, 95 missed cuts and 9 w/d. Made a little over 235k for his career. 63k for the win and a total of approx 167k from his win through 1988. Still he is a PGA Tour winner. Not many can say that. Played some on the Web.com and Champions tour as well.

Don't know if this qualifies, but Bill Rogers. He won the British Open back in 1981 and earned next to nothing after that until he retired 6 - 8 years later. I think he earned less than $8,000 in that time. I read about him quite a while ago, so my numbers might a wee bit off. I know google is my friend, but... :-)

Bit harsh as for about 2 years he was probably best in world...Did ok til 84 and got the takeaway yips. He just couldn't swing and hence retired...but he was a top player in his era

Jim Benepe!

Won the '88 Western Open, 126.000$, career earnings around 395.000$. Not impressive, but he won one more than the most of us.

Ernie Gonzalez

Pensacola Open 1986, 40.500$, career earnings 275.000$. Not impressive, but he won one more than the most of us.

I was just going to post Benepe. I had moved to Chicago the fall before, and remember well when he won the Western Open.

However, he may be the greatest player ever from Wyoming.....

I feel like we're gonna stumble upon someone who has like $500,000 in career earnings from their one win and like $48 for the rest of their PGA tour career.

Someone has to have one win and then nothing else.

John Morse - 1995 Hawaii Open winner (the year Wie played): $216k for that $1.3mil career

Michelle Wie was 5 years old when that tournament was played.

I grew up in Columbus and was on property when the "hometown boy" won the Southern Open.

If we're going to ignore Majors for a moment, Angel Cabrera. I found it funny that he's won two of the Big Ones, and had a playoff, yet has done really badly in comparison in the normal events with just the one win

Angel is the best and anyone who plays this fast should get a medal.

Hits before the applause stops.

Very cool. Must have been a great time when he won. Especially being a local and Monday qualifier. Just for the record I don't consider a winner of any tour event or a major to ever be a "worst" anything. Even then it was very difficult to win a tour event. He tried. He won and got to be a touring professional for a while. Congrats to Fred.

Nah it's just a fun conversation, don't be so dramatic.

It just needs a rebranding Thrill:

Which Tour Player did the best job maximizing his single PGA winner's cheque, vis-a-vis his career earnings. Or something like that ;)
