I don't think JP is very hands on with the green reading, and lets face it ... Rory's putting has been pathetic. The timing of it does seem strange following his comments after the Open ... but something has to change, Rory isn't getting any younger.

I went to The Open and you could sort of sense it, very little talking or walking together at all. I'm not sure if this is Steve Williams' thing but he was 50 yards ahead of his group every hole, might see them two link up?

 

I also think all the praise Greller was getting made Rory think he was missing out a little, did JP do much?

 

Speith has got Rory fired up it seems could be a great year for golf if Rory starts dropping putts.

Rory putted better than OK in his early years with JP. Now he can't putt or spot his wedges and giving JP the boot and blame isn't facing up to reality.

 

Now, if a new caddy can motivate him and get him to take responsibility for his own performance, that would be great but I can't see it.

McIlroy will remain an overpaid showpony IMO.

Rory's putting was decent at The Open. Been ok for a lot of the year really, he is + Strokes Gained Putting. Putted great in South Africa at the start of the year. Rory will never be one of the best putters but he doesn't need to be, just needs to be solid. There is, however, improvement to be had in his green reading. His stroke is mostly fine.

 

The big problem is wedges and short irons for Rory, I remember a time in his early days when I considered him one of the very best in the game with his wedges, peppering flags for fun. Now he'll hit a 350 yard drive, have 100 yards to the pin and hit it to 30 feet. This is happening way too often. Similarly, his short game is just not as sharp as what it needs to be.

 

If you compare him to younger Rory at his best, I'd go

 

Driving then = Driving now. Slightly longer but maybe a touch more crooked than he was

Long irons/woods then > Long irons/woods now. Not a big difference but was slightly sharper with those clubs

Short irons/wedges then >>> Short irons/wedges now

Short game shots then >> Short game shots now

Putting then = Putting now

If you guys think Rory is going to grab a new looper and suddenly score better your going to be dissapointed.. JP wasnt causing him to miss putts.. and JP wasnt hitting the rancid wedges hes been hitting lately.. nor the big hooks off the Tee... misclubing him..lol thats the least of his current worries... He has to put his head back on and go to work.. period... just being Rory isnt going to get it done...
