McIlroy fires caddie.

I said in another thread McIlroy needed to do this. Good move by him. JP seemed like a wet blanket. Of course, JP wasn't to blame for McIlroy's bad shots, but sometimes a player just needs a fresh start.

 

Now he needs to learn how to read greens properly, which I'm confident is at the root of his putting woes.

 

I suspect Spieth's Open win has given McIlroy the kick up the backside that he needs.

If you guys think Rory is going to grab a new looper and suddenly score better your going to be dissapointed.. JP wasnt causing him to miss putts.. and JP wasnt hitting the rancid wedges hes been hitting lately.. nor the big hooks off the Tee... misclubing him..lol thats the least of his current worries... He has to put his head back on and go to work.. period... just being Rory isnt going to get it done...

Based on what i have heard this is true. I have seen comments from other players that Rory badly misclubs frequently because JP doesn't have a clue. The players have been saying for years that Rory should dump him but they say Rory has kept him out of stubborness.

 

I'm liking the notion that JP badly misclubs him 30 yards off line with a medium iron .... :)

 

 

Rory's strokes gained on approaches is .834 which would rank 3rd if he had enough rounds to qualify.

I think what JP did for Rory in the first round of the Open is the type of caddie he needs all the time. Also, for Rory being one of the greatest ball strikers in the world, IMO there were too many times where he had a mid/short iron into a green after a gorgeous drive, only to fly it by 10 yards (re: 2017 Masters). Then they both look at each other in astonishment. Don't know how much of that is the caddie's fault but I'd say giving a distance, lie, wind, club selection recommendation falls at least partly on JP. Maybe the next guy can do better.

Unfortunately I think the caddie is the least of Rory's problems.

 

Rory's "struggles" have been exaggerated.

 

His rib injury has been his big problem. He played in only 9 PGA tour events. His scoring average in those 9 events is 69.21. He has 5 top 10s even though he hasn't been able to practice like he normally would.

This is a bit like Lydia Ko's situation, where she made a lot of changes in one year and it took its toll. New wife, new equipment, new ball, why not a new caddy? New coach next?

 

I'd say there's a very good chance McIlroy gets a new coach soon as well - hopefully someone that will make minor improvements to an already great swing (as opposed to a complete overhaul which would clearly be unnecessary). Someone like Butch Harmon for instance.

Rory probably saw how great MG helped Jordan and realized its time to get that help on his side. A Rory Spieth rivalry would be awesome and you kinda get the sense they don't like each other.

I think Ferguson has been given an involuntary vacation from wrx. The mods seem to not tolerate any nonsense to help get wrx cleaned up. I know a couple that got nasty with me and others and they were banned...one was a semi prominent poster.

Agreed. Not much more I can add...except this: If anything JP challenged him to be "Rory" and he responded for the final 3 1/2 rounds of the Open. That said, I personally don't think he liked being called out by his caddie to play better and frankly, remember who he was and get him back to playing that way.

butch would be great.. but not beecause he needs swings tips.. But because Butch has the patented tool for pulling large heads out of their respective backsides...he tells it like it is and if you dont like it GTFO...

people are just holding him up to play at the level he is capable of... its not a "dis" its actually a compliment.. you dont hear anyone worrying about what Poulter or Hoffman are doing do you ? Both are good players.. great journeymen.. but neither are Rory, Spieth, DJ, Day level... when the big guns misfire for a while they get heat... just the way it is.. be glad the heat is there.. otherwise you are just another also-ran..

Totally agree! The look Rory gave J.P after his tee shot on Friday was telling. Then he was in the same bunker the next day. There has definitely been a vibe the last few events they are working as well together as in the past.

It pains me to say it but Rory could do with someone like S Williams, a really good green reader who has the b@lls to speak up when he needs to, sometimes a player can be too friendly with the caddie, if a caddie saves you half a shot a round because you didnt do something stupid, or you holed a putt instead of lipping out, it can make all the difference
