RECAPS: The TaylorMade #TwistFaceExperience. 7 GolfWRX members visit The Kingdom for an exclusive M3

Recommended Posts

Forecast calling for 53 degrees tomorrow, no rain but gusty winds. My club is open and our men's group will have at least 4 foursomes. I'm looking forward to playing the new M4 on my home track and I'll report back with results...

I'm bonding hard with the M3 440. Today was much nicer, no layers needed.

I didn't miss the center-ish much today. I two hit high toe side shots but not as far out as I was missing yesterday. One ended up drawing more than I'd like but left me with a shot at the green on an easy par 5. The other was a straight push that just stayed on line.

I tee'd the ball down a bit on a few short par 4's I'd normally hit fw or hybrid on. Caught them a little low and loved the results.

My main thought today, which was obviously a better swing day, is this driver is good enough for me to bag with or without the new tech in the face. This probably has more to do with the fitting. But I'm finding this set up to be perfect for me. Besides the one miss a little left, I was in the fairway or just right all day long. That's big for me. I think my 440 is just as forgiving as my LST was. Which is saying something. A big improvement over the M1 440 IMO.

One of my main playing partners was with me today and his input is something I rely on with my equipment. He's the kind of guy who notices when a club is off one sw or the wraps are wrong on the grip. It's freaky.

My biggest concern this entire time was the weight, He picked it up and said it wasn't nearly as heavy feeling as other drivers I've played recently and he liked how it felt. And he likes a lighter driver. Hearing that kind of help me relax and just trust the fitting and lead to a good swing day. I let the shaft kind of get in my head.

I love how this head sets up behind the ball.

Playing again tomorrow.

Decent mid-winter day here in NJ...low to mid 50s with gusty (but thankfully not cold) winds. This was the first round I've had the chance to play with my new M4 on my home course.

I striped my first drive down the center of #1 (420 yards downwind) to around where I'd normally hit a good one in-season leaving a PW to a back pin. The greens and tees were soft on top, but were still frozen once you got about 3/4 inch down. It was tough to get a tee in the ground on the front 9 and the first 6 greens were pretty bouncy. As the round progressed they softened, but then became more difficulty to putt as they were a bit lumpy with old holes.

I'm mixed on my driving results. I'm so used to playing my home track that it's tough to adjust/change my regular lines and shot shapes for certain holes. This can make things difficult if the ball doesn't curve (or not curve...lol) as expected.

This was my third round with the M4 and I've yet to miss one left with it, which is very rare for me. I did however, miss a handful to the right. This set-up is definitely anti-hook. Most of the shots I intentionally tried to draw went pretty straight, and most of my fades over-cut and missed right, only one really getting away from me on #4.

I had several excellent drives with good distance. Our par 5 7th played around 510 today, into a left to right hurting cross-wind. I ended up with 219 to a back hole location, hit the pickle to the middle of the green and subsequently three putted. ?

Our 9th hole is short, so it's either a 5/6 iron layup to about 140, or thread a drive with a draw to an upper level fairway for a sand wedge approach. I hit a good one here turning it over slightly right to left leaving me a lob wedge approach. It was nice to see that little draw as expected.

In the end I shot 77, with only one birdie (the scat held up for $50!) and three double bogies. We halved our four-ball Which was lucky considering neither my partner nor I played particularly well. I came out ahead winning all but one of my indies which was also nice!

The verdict is still out on the driver. I like that it's anti-left, but I don't like that I'm missing it right more than usual. I may just have to adjust my lines/alignment and stop trying to fade it and just blast it straight. The flight on good ones is what I like to see, high, but pretty flat.

Twist Face is very apparent and welcomed on toe hits as they don't dive left. It's harder for me to tell on fades, but I did hit a nice one on our 16th, another par 5 into the wind. I hit my usual line and could tell I heeled it a tad. It held it's line though and was pretty long for being into the wind.

If it doesn't rain we're going to try again tomorrow, otherwise my next round will be at Punta Espada in Cap Cana Dominican Republic Friday afternoon!

We were open today, which was a nice surprise. 50 and light rain on the front. It stopped around the 7th hole. Very soggy but just happy to get out there and test some more.

I'm getting more confident each time out with this set up. I had one miss left today. That's about 2-3 less than normal. I was about 10 yards off the fw but in good shape. My playing partner was impressed with this one. He's seen that swing before on that hole and I showed him where I hit it on the head.

Most shots were straight or slight fades. I push healed one on 7 that ended up one fairway over but considering the wet conditions, I surprised how far it went.

It's anti-left for sure. Again, probably more about the fitting but I'm really excited about the early results.

If you're considering these heads, and need help with spin, give the 440 a chance. It's very playable.

The 440 scares me. The best player at my club is not very technical and I got him hooked on this site and set up with trackman time. He literally picked up 35 yards of carry with last years 440 but his miss was a penalty stroke almost every time, was playing an old 910. I feel bad about opening the can of worms ?. Good to hear its working out for you, I’ll be following along because he wants this years 440 and so far I’ve been tempted to steer him towards something more forgiving.

FWIW I had no problem with the new M3 440 and could game it easily. I barely noticed any forgiveness difference in my fitting, just a slightly flatter launch. No intimidation at all, and it did not seem very penal on my miss hits

How would you m3 440 guys compare launch angle to last year's m1 440? (Or m1 460 if you didn't play m1 440)

Higher launch. I was around 14-16 spinning at 1800, once he dialed in the setting. More forgiving, especially low on the face.

I enjoyed hitting last years 440...but it could kill a round. I could never rely on it long term. This years head is a completely different animal IMO. For me so far, in terms of playability, I'd compare it more to the 16 M2 with better sound and feel.

Editing to add please keep in mind the fitting we had was as good as it gets. My fitter Perry was incredible. I didn't trust it at first because I don't see myself as a great candidate for the M3 440 and the shaft was a bit more than I would ever think to try.

When we played the next day I was pretty beat up from the fitting. But even then, if I didn't do something really stupid, I got really good results. It's get better each time out.

My buddies and I were thinking exactly that! And throw in proper fitting in there, too!

Doesn’t matter what new tech you have on the driver and which shaft/head combo you have if you can’t swing properly! Big Cat had the TM van at his disposal, I’m sure, and they couldn’t help him hit more fairways.

And no, I’m not advocating lessons either. Not everyone can afford what these teachers charge for a lesson these days ... ?

The M4 is dubbed as neutral, but I've found mine to be pretty anti-left. I'm not sure if it's the weighting or the face angle, though it does seem to sit a little more open at address relative to my Epic SZ when I grip them the same. I'll say for certain the M4 looks awesome at address, perfect shape, deep face, and not closed at all. I like the sound/feel too. It's loud indoors but not as noticeable outside.

I literally have not lost a shot left with the M4 so far in 3 1/2 rounds, and that's my typical miss. I've hit a few that felt like they were going to be leftward gonners, but they hung in there and curved less than expected.

I'm not sure if you had the same conversation with your fitter Dewey but I asked Perry to please help me take the left side out.

The left side of my course is death on most holes. I'm so used to setting up down the right side since my natural flight has always been a draw and I fight hooks. But with the M3 I've been able to start it more center and most misses have been just off the right fw. I'm finding myself holding off sometimes so I don't don't pull it and those have been my bigger misses right. When I trust it, it's been so good.

I've been so happy with the new ball flight that I haven't tried drawing the ball much yet. Trying to draw a ball usually became a hook for me. I'm hoping the more I play, I'll be able to move it left when needed. If not, I'll tinker with the settings.

True but very difficult to blindly trust your swing for many that play the game. I've never hit a bad shot when I trust and execute my swing; I've hit the wrong shot plenty of times but that's another story.

This has been more about trusting the fitting, than the swing. I've spent most of my golf life holding off a bit, especially with driver. With the M3 I was fit for, if I don't commit, it's a push. It's nice to go after with confidence.

Welp, went in today and got fit for the new M3. Was pretty excited after reading this thread and hearing the podcast so I went in and had a fitting done. Really liked how it felt. Ten more yards? Not likely, but I do like the concept of the help on mishits and loved the shaft offerings. Really really felt good to me. Very excited for it to come in.

Mid 50’s today. Sunny and dry enough to play. I worked 11 hrs not including my 45 minutes of drive time each way for a total of another 1.5 hrs. Weekend is calling for snow/ rain and dropping temperatures. That’s just not right!

Dumb Question- Can you pay to go get fit there by the same guys?

yes, I remember Jory told me that you can schedule a fitting @ the Kingdom for around $500, right now you'd probably have to book it a few month prior due to the product launch and west coast swing coming up, from now to April is their peak season.

I'd love to get more information on this. My buddy called down to the Plantation and they told him you couldn't get a fitting at the Kingdom unless you were a PGA Pro (or GolfWRX member :) )

In not sure if you can schedule a walk-in, but they most certainly have packages where you stay at Reynolds and go through a Kingdom fitting. I'm not certain how far ahead you'd need to schedule, but sounds like your friend either received incorrect or perhaps partial/incomplete information.
