I've always played two wedges. Started in middle school with Cleveland RTG's in 53 and 60. Changed over to Nike in the same setup then went to the Titleist SM line. Made a decision to go 52 and 60 in the SM6 and been fine. Chipping and pitching have always been strong in my game. Adding a 56 would get in my head and never get used most likely.

Play 47-54-60. Works well for me and utilize the PW a lot from 120-100. It allows me to never really have a "full wedge." I used to have a 52/58 but liked the 54 a little better than the 52.

Β

I like less wedges as I have tried 52/56/60 before several times and always felt like I had too many options.

I’m moving to a 52/58 set up this year. I’ve been a 50/54/60 user for several years but did some experimenting at the end of last season with the 52/58 with good results.

Β

I used the 50 and 56 for full shots mostly, but I found I can easily choke down on the 52 and PW to achieve the same results I was getting with the 50/54. I actually found I was more accurate that way.

Β

Switching to the 52/58 combo has helped me fill the spot between my 4 iron and hybrid.

I'm considering adding in a 5w and taking out my 60* and 50* and going PW, 52, 58*. Although I do like having a higher bounce wedge in the bag for really fluffy or wet lies. However, I also really want a club that I can get up in the air and land soft in that 210-220 range, and my UDI is more of a lower flight that tends to run out. Guess it's a matter of what kind of shot comes up more... generally lean toward having more wedges since that's the more likely scenario. Right now... anything with a carry >200 I either lay up or take a tiny 3w.

I play pitching wedge (46) and 54,58 vokeys

Β

How do you manage 8* between your PW and 54? Short stroke the PW for the inbetween distances?

Β

Im playing PW (46) and just a 54 Vokey (left my 50 at the range a while ago and never replaced it)

Β

But the way I manage the difference is exactly what you said. I'll basically hit a smooth, knock down 1/4 swing with my PW from about 100-115.

Β

and if I find myself in the 115-125 yardage, I just do the same thing with my 9 iron. Then a full PW takes over at 130.

Β

I've always wanted to replace my 50, but I have also gotten so used to this style of play that I think I'll save the money. I've found I'm much more consistent when I'm taking a 1/4 swing with my PW than I am with a full swing with the 50. And on top of that, I get to keep my 2 UDI in the bag at all times.

Most recently 45, 50 and 56 when walking with 12-13 clubs. The 56 is PM grind which is easy to open, flop etc.

I add a 62 PM (60 bent) on tougher courses though, especially with greenside rough or deep bunkers.

Β

Part of me is tempted to do 45, 51, 58 (I like the 58 PM), but I have no gaps...could add a 2/3+ wood for backup driver but not sure it really helps.

Four wedges was a hassle to manage and practice. Also, my wedge matrix for partial shots had several cells with duplicate yardages.

Β

There's the rub with using only 3 wedges (including PW). Those "duplicate yardages" aren't really duplicate shots. They are two different trajectories and spin rates at the same yardage, which should potentially provide more scoring opportunities.

Β

I have been experimenting with 47, 52, 58. But I do sometimes find I don't have quite the right club...

I'm normally a 4 wedge guy but this weekend I'm playing in a tourney on a course that will be playing longer than I normally play so I'm swapping out my 50 and 54 for a 52 and adding the 2h.

I'm in the 2 wedges after PW wagon. Used to play 3 wedges but more often than not, I'd either hit my gap or lob. The 56 was merely there to take up space and keep the other clubs warm. So I went 50 58 and I'm glad I did! Takes one less club to think about using and for the most part, I don't miss the 56.

Oh yeah, played a 50 bent to 51 & a 58 bent to 57.

They worked very well & I played some of my best rounds while they were in the bag.

I think this was partly due to two reasons, :1. The wide gaps called for imagination & loads of practice trying to master all sorts of grip positions & 3/4 & 1/2 swings.

This had my short game super sharp & fired at the pin at will which helped the scores.

2. Obviously more practice gave me great imagination, & pulled off shots that my playing partners wouldn’t dare try.

The problem is that I just couldn’t keep that level of practice up so I opted for a more full swing setup, 52 , 56 & 60, I miss some of the shots though but unless I’m prepared to practice my short game every 2nd day, this setup stays.

PW = 46* - wedges at 52/58 for consistent 6* gaps. 58* has plenty of loft and I can open it up for any shots around the green I need.

I went back from 3 to 2 last year. Current set is PW 46, SW 52 and LW 60. 52 is pretty darn versatile and I rarely miss the 56 (the one removed).
