Smylee Kaufman tracker

Today my wife and I were enjoying a day free of kids at the Greenbrier and unexpectedly saw Smylee in I believe the 13th (par 5) fairway. He had a long iron in hand for what was about a 220 approach shot. We couldn't believe it, he absolutely hit a worm burner about 100 yards dead right and one of the players (not sure who) in the group in front of him had to jump to avoid the ball hitting him.

I've been to a lot of PGA events, and have never seen a skull like this one. You could tell from his body language he was not only embarrassed but looked like he just wanted to go home and hide.

We felt so bad for the guy as he seems like a nice kid who is just steering the ball and who has lost his last vestige of confidence!

Good luck Smylee!

Chris Kirk topped a drive a few weeks ago and it less then 100 yards and he still made par

Man, what is wrong with this guy

Missed nine putts inside of 10 feet today, with 5 of those being from 6 feet and closer.

Guy has made just ONE cut since October. One!

Im personally shocked he hasnt just put the clubs in the corner somewhere and taken a bunch of time off to get his head and/or life straight. Its clear he needs it. Hopefully whatever personal demons are eating him up get taken care of, because its clear his focus isnt on his golf game.

Could a legit 4hcp who plays on tough courses (72+/135+) beat SK?

No. His scoring average is 74.5, which most likely means he's still a + hc on PGA courses. What's a 4hc scoring average? 80?

That may be his average for the season but no way that’s what he would post for his last 20 rounds. Best 10 out of his last 20 and he might seriously be like a 3 HC.

I remember playing junior tournaments against Smylie in Alabama. Kid was always a great golfer and he was always playing exceptionally. I think he may have just burned out. His mental game is gone and I am not sure how he gets it back. Those early morning rounds with Smylie were always a treat. Alabama junior golf was so strong back in the 2000's. I am not sure about it now since I have moved and stopped following. Hoping Smylie pulls it together.

I've seen a lot of horrific shots in my days of going to the CDN Open by lesser knowns in the field

And when I played in a Nike event, I swear there were cats on the range hitting it like 4 cappers

At the same time you think of misfortunes that happen to other golfers and think that Kaufman doesn't have it too bad. If he's good enough he can regain his card. And if he isn't, well, on this board we often whine about underachievers -- and he would then be celebrated as an overachiever.

Can he get out of the basement of the leaderboard?

Another miss cut

I grew up playing junior golf with Smylie (well, we played at our home course a good bit growing up). He was four years younger than me. I think we played up until I was 15 and he was 11. I think I beat him twice.

Nice guy. Great family. Married life, injury and high profile friends aren't always a good combo. He was least equipped to handle the "Spring Break" fame. Once he really decides to turn things around, I have no doubt he'll play some good golf.

That makes sense actually. Seems like he needs to get out of his own way.

From that Golf Channel article it sounds like media coverage and social media comments are getting into his head, not a good sign.

I don't doubt the injury but based on the article I'd say his mental state is in as bad a shape as his elbow. These kids all flock to social media for instant fame but don't realize that people are fickle and will turn against you if you don't live up to their expectations. Kaufman needs to focus on golf and not being a social media star.

He had a good showing at the Sanderson here in Mississippi, think a top 5 that made him a little money. Wonder how well he has to do in those 5 events the tour is going to give him when he comes back. Also wondering if he misses full status if he would have enough to get into the web playoff or whatever it is at the end of next season.

He came to my course with his old teacher a couple times to play in a tournament they put on. I went and watched him, Mullinax, Shelton, and Bobby Wyatt one day. Smylie has a good swing and hits it plenty far enough, hopefully he can get it all back together.
