If you had to buy a driver by SOUND ONLY....

For years I've played a driver -- to remain unnamed -- that feels fine to me but the sound at impact is... let's say... a bit "unique." Whenever I see/hear somebody else hit this model driver, I can't help but think "Man, that noise is brutal." So here's my question: what's the Best-Sounding Driver Of All-Time? Let's try and keep "sound" completely different from "feel," even though we all know that these sensations go hand-in-hand.

 

We're not talking about Longest, Most Forgiving, Best-Looking or Most Adjustable... just best-sounding. This includes how the driver sounds when YOU hit it as well as the noise you hear when smacked by someone else. I'm no expert but I've always thought that late-model Titleist drivers had a nice muted "pop," not too loud or harsh.

 

Your thoughts? Which driver and WHY.

 

510TP. Just a nice smush sound. Not too metallic, not too thwacky like a persimmon wood. It just sounded like compression.

The 2016 M2. I can find nothing wrong with this club and will likely play it until I lose it or it breaks. Sounds great, feels great, it's forgiving, and it's as long as most.

Does anyone know what it is that makes the sound of a driver muted vs that loud, deafening crack of some drivers? Is it size, material, both, something else?

 

To me the best sounding driver I ever played was the Callaway XR Pro '15 I had. It's a 440cc club and had this muted thunk that I loved.

I could never go back to my loud-as-Hell R11s after that.

I loved the sound of my Wilson Fat Shaft Deep Red. My friends eventually shamed me away from that driver although it is still in the garage, if it ever quits raining maybe I will take it to the range.

Yes the vapor fly pro has a hotmelt port towards the heel. Beware the vapor fly pro is already a heavy head especially with the all metal nike adapter. If your playing 44.5 or less it will work fine.

It is a great feeling head very 510tp like. I had mine bent to 56 lie and 3open,just under 8 degrees. Launches too low for me now. Sound and feel are top notch.

The 510TP and 983K were the paramount for me - absolutely wonderful feel, sound, and appearance. Have a 510TP in my trunk that I need to take out on the course soon. It's the steal of a century - $20 for a tour issued head with a Matrix MFS shaft installed (the one popularized by KJ Choi, but in black instead of orange).

Mine is a hotmelted Head from the oven and it’s hard to describe the solid sound at impact. It just feels fast off the face.

The PXG X driver has that perfect solid dull thwack. Hoping the new one performs better but retains that nearly perfect solid sound and feel.

 

Agreed. M4 blew past it on a launch monitor but the sound and feel was the best since the Callaway FT Tour

+1 for the Wilson Fat Shaft Deep Red. Still in my basement. But for a currently available model, my hotmelted G400 Max sounds good to me, although it could have a lot to do with the fairways that club finds.
