West of the Mississippi...

Why do people selling clubs add $10, $15 or whatever to their listing if the buyer is west of the Mississippi? Is that the cutoff point for USPS or something and rates go up that much? Should I be charging people more if they're EAST of the Mississippi???

I dont know the specific costs, but generally yes if you live west of the river it costs more to ship USPS so I typically charge an extra $5. My last club shipped to CA cost $17. Club shipped to Illinois cost $10 or so.

If you subscribe to the BST and see all of the listings, you would already be seeing a ton. That's why I asked the question lol.

Works the other way to for us East.

I figure that in to the price when I list.

1 price, done. If someone sends an offer, I always ask where to. If they're close to me I'm more willing to work out a deal. If your far I'm not budging much. I've been beat in my younger days on shipping.

Yeah, I'm in the middle of the country and have noticed wide ranges of shipping prices but figure it evens out in the end.

For USPS it fluctuates depending on weight. First class is the same anywhere. I sent a watch bracelet for $2.66 to Hawaii and it got there in 3 days. I could send that same bracelet to NY for the same price. Priority I can send a packaged to Oregon for $7 and it’ll be $15 to NY. FEDEX and UPS seem to have closer rates, but they just take a lot longer

If you do it all online it’s much cheaper. I live in Iowa and have not shipped anything out over $10 that I can remember. Recently shipped to New York, California, Texas, Florida, etc. All single clubs but the last iron set I shipped I want to say was only around $15-$18. East or West of The Mississippi means nothing to me as far as price but that’s probably because it borders Iowa.

I’ve done it I think depending on what I was selling (maybe I said west coast not Mississippi)

For BST it’s suicide to post a list price “plus shipping”) or at least for me I won’t consider buying something if I don’t know the all in price) unless it’s a golf bag. I then have to find whatever box I have lying around to ship. Chances are I’m losing money on the transaction either way since I don’t flip on here. That $5 relieves the heartburn for when my shipping instead of being the 10 I estimated ends up being 20. With how quick postings get on page 2 and buried I don’t really have time to negotiate with a buyers based on their location and what my cost is all in as a seller.

Now if it’s clothes or something that can fit in a flat rate box that’s silly to me.

Tl;dr- when I’m already losing money on a transaction I try to stop the hemorrhaging wherever I can.

I will say for whatever reason, it's off-putting for me to see the West of the Mississippi thing on ads...probably partially because I fit there but not by much being on the border of KS and MO. So if someone is shipping from...say Illinois...I'm going to get charged extra for living basically one state over.

Shipping a full set of irons with insurance has cost me a few times almost $50 to send out West. I sometimes add a $5 West of Mississippi fee and I think that's extremely reasonable, especially for larger and heavier items. I recently sold two items (shafts), one to TX and other to KS. I did not end up taking any extra fee out that way because it was only a few $ more. I would not hold it against anyone who's out West asking for the same if shipping East.

I do not buy from ads that have the West of Mississippi rider. I do use shipping as a consideration if someone is negotiating.

I don't either. It's an automatic skip over.

I've always built shipping into the price (like most here do I suspect). But I'm thinking about changing that.

The buying "mind" is a funny thing. Often times I'll look at the shipping charge separately from the item. Weird I know, but I might feel better about paying, say, $100 for something, plus $15 shipping, then $115 total. Makes no sense I realize, and maybe I'm the only person who feels this way, but in my mind it's true. I feel like I made a better purchase value wise at $100. And treat the shipping as an a expense. Probably stems from ny business.

Plus keeping the shipping charge separate adds a touch more leverage in negotiations, which seem to be getting increasingly more difficult lately.

Shipping should cost $25 max for FedEx irons set coast to coast or $20 USPS Priority single clubs drivers, wedges and putters. You gotta cut down boxes and mess around with dimensions. $40 is a rip off.

$20 for single clubs, drivers, wedges and putters???

I don'y think I have spent over $12 to ship a putter from Mass to Cali. USPS priority on Paypals "Ship Now" section always has significantly discounted prices vs. in store.

when you receive funds through paypal - it gives you the option to ship through them via USPS & UPS. it's a little cheaper doing it that way as opposed to going to an actual USPS office and shipping through the clerk. it also notifies the buyer of the tracking information and all you have to do is drop it off.

Awesome! Then you won't waste others time when you try to low ball and also expect us to pay twice as much to ship out West.

Not sure why you're so hostile toward me - but I generally don't haggle at all. I pay the price asked, or maybe $5 - $10 off if it says obo.

I'm a respectful buyer and seller. I ship same/next day, I package well, I take copious pictures, I leave prompt feedback when something arrives, and I don't lowball. I'm fairly certain I've never offered anything more than 10% off, ever. If something is way too high, I move on.

And from my experience shipping all over the place for the same price (today I shipped to Malibu, CA, Circleville, OH, Bristol, TN, and Wichita, KS), it's never been double. The $5 extra wouldn't cover double, anyway.

The $5 is a principle thing, it just seems cheap and unnecessary, it's served me well to avoid people who add it.

Also, when you ship through PayPal you have the option to see if UPS is cheaper. I just sold a set of irons (shipping from KS to NC) and it was over $24 with insurance on USPS and only $19 and change for UPS with the same declared value.
