I can't contribute to the 1990 WITB, I didn't begin playing golf for another 8 yrs or so. :)

I may have owned a set of clubs by then, but I didn't actually start to play with any sort of regularity until 2007. Looking back on this thread my first contribution was a photo of the first vintage bag I put together, but the following might be a bit more accurate for 1990:

Should give this set-up a go at some point.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Carried over from '89,Titleist laminated driver stiff,Bob Charles 3-wood,Titleist '82 Tour Model blades 3-sw,Ping Anser.

During 1990 I had Mizuno Pro Original with S400,when I was good they were very, very good but when I was bad they were horrid!

It was the shafts and so (still in '90) I changed to TP-9's with R300 and on to a Howson copy of TM driver with dimpled head and a GOLD shaft!

The cheapest and one of the best drivers I ever owned.

1990 Birth Year ?

First off, I'd buy the December 1989 issue of Golf Digest for $7.95, which has the Equipment Preview article for 1990 ... "the complete buyer's guide"

https://www.ebay.com...hYAAOSwepZXTe66

Then I'd make my club choice and hit eBay !

The risk, of course, is that you end up with about 15 birth year sets :)

1990 I played (age 15):

a metalhead MacGregor driver (department store crappy driver tbh), the steel shaft was sort of S-shaped as i tended to throw my driver everytime I misshit it...

Browning laminated 4-wood

3-SW MacGregor Jack Nicklaus Golden Bear irons (from what i remember they had a muscle shaped a bit like the Hogan Precisions, but can't find an pics online, department store line of clubs i think) R300 shafts

Either a Ping Anser of a Bullseye putter.

Ah, the Mac-Cobra's, beautiful blades. A real purity to those clubs. Real demanding, but incredibly rewarding to nut.

For something more practical, surprised nobody mentioned Tommy Armour 845's

Hmm

I had Titleist tour model blades and a Tom Watson sand wedge

Two persimmon drivers. Slazenger and Power Bilt Thoroughbred

Persimmon 3 & 4 fairways were majestic persimmon block MacGregor blondes with the aluminum inserts. Made my albatross with that 3 wood !!

Wilson 8813 putter, oh baby, I didn't know what a 3 putt was back then

I can hear my spikes click clacking away as I walk on the path around the valley of the par three 12th hole of the local muni I was a member at

2 years shy from becoming a university golfer carrying Taylormade blades and a Bridgestone Whopper driver !!!

I moved from my Titleist tour blades to these bad boys

These were the rage for a while. The 1-4 irons were hollow bodied and compared to true blades, easy as pie to hit

The 1 iron is in a tour bag behind me in the office right now

I can tell you that compared to my peers in university golf I was a much stronger long iron player than most because of these

Palmer metal driver (white head with a white shaft, yep there’s nothing really new in golf)

Taylormade 3 and 5 metal

Ping eye two red dot 3-PW

Wilson R90 SW (this puppy had a brown shaft, you could spin the hell out of it out of a bunker)

Putter was either a 8813 or a Zebra (The former when I was rolling it good, and the latter was when...well, I sucked.)

Even better...these were the only clubs I owned. I maybe had an extra putter or wedge laying around, but that was it. I was still mostly living in NYC. My apartment had one closet. No room for extra anything, much less golf clubs.

Played Bethpage Black dozens of times, 24/25 bucks takes you all the way.

Driver 10.5 Taylor Made Burner 2.0
Ping 3 and 7 woods
Component 5 and 6 hybrids
and 8 and 9 irons (SGI)

Scratch 47 degree PW

Alpha SW

All graphite shafts
Putter: uh, I have a few

1990, I was playing Tommy Armour 845s irons and metal woods. The irons were great but, I wouldn't play those woods these days.

the original 845 driver was a small headed rascal wasn't it ? straight hitter like the Hogan Series 56, but no mass.

today's three woods are bigger.

currently playing:
FT-5 - D
Cally FT hybrids
Hogan Edge GS, 4-PW
Vokey Oil Can 52, 56
Ping Anser 2

TM FlexTech Lite/Titleist StaDry

1970’s PGF Status Mark 11 irons ( upgraded to foam filled TM burner mid irons around 94)

Taylor Made Burner driver ( horrible slice machine)

Greg Norman Putter

AND the love of my life.

PGF Little Slammer ( small plastic head with heavy sole and lead insert on shorter shaft) designed in 60s by Tom Crow of Cobra fame who later came out with the baffler.
