El Tucan Speaks..... (NO POLITICS)

Recommended Posts

"5k is a good week" is an idiotic thing to say. My god Matt.

It is a good week for Tucan. But it isn't a fair week.

Yeah, this is bad for him and he's single-handedly punching holes in his reputation. This could have been handled differently and quietly.

"Fair" is one word that I can not stand. Who defines what is "fair" and not "fair"?

Standard rates for Tour caddies is what determines what is fair, even for fill-in caddies

"Fair" could mean "going rate." And he didn't even want that.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

It appears Gillis took care of that previously. When he spouted off without knowing the true story.

Gillis was pretty close to the truth.

Funny, I never heard him say anything about Kuchar paying more than the amount they had agreed on. Which now appears to be the real truth.

You mean getting 20% more than he agreed to?

According to Kuchar, he got everything he agreed to because the $1,000 bonus for a top-10 was discussed ahead of time. Ortiz strongly disputes that.

Except fill-ins are not tour caddies. So throw that “standard rate” garbage out the window.

FACT. The reporters keep throwing that in the mix when it has nothing to do with local/one time caddies. Part of this got started with a “journalist” basically telling the guy he should have gotten 10% based on that flawed assumption.

Kuchar's from the South, most likely inbred and has visited Walmart on more than one occasion.

I don't know how else to explain him.

He said they agreed to a bonus structure that would have allowed him to make up to $4,000 for the week. Seems pretty clear cut.

Now if there was miscommunication because of language issues, that I could see.

Kuchar didn't pay him more than he agreed to. Read Kuchar's comments: $3k base plus $1k for a top-10. Your real truth is not what Kuchar said. Gillis was a little off, but his point was that Ortiz was underpaid and that is still a valid point.

No, I'm fine with fill-ins getting less than what a regular Tour caddie gets. The general consensus is that around $50k was acceptable. But that would depend on how much the fill-in contributed to the win.

Are we reading two different reports? Agreed to a bonus plan that would pay him up to $4,000. That seems to me to $3,000 + $1,000 for a top ten. Exactly what he said.

I'm thinking the claim of being offered $15k and turning it down is total b.s.

Not going to fault Tucan. He's naive, got in way over his head listening to others. Good one Gillis, dirtbag.

“Speaking to GolfChannel.com Wednesday at the Genesis Open, Kuchar confirmed the $5,000 figure as well as the report that he subsequently offered an additional $15,000 which Ortiz refused.“

Who came up with this general consensus?

For Holy Moses, apparently I surpassed the allotted amount of quotes to reply to.

Probably the same consensus that gives a normal Tour caddie 10% for winning

You claimed that Kuchar was a nice guy and paid Ortiz a little more than what they had agreed on, but they had supposedly agreed on $4k if Kuchar got a top-10 so Kuchar didn't above and beyond what he claimed to give? Maybe I am misunderstanding you.

To me it feels like if Kuch would have paid him 50k, there would have been rumblings, possibly not as loud, that he didn't give the guy the full amount as regular caddie. Remember Kuch has won millions on tour and could spare the money according to some.

I respect your opinion and agree to disagree on this one. Don't want this thread to turn nasty as evident by the comment above about being from the south etc.

BsC, I can’t believe you’d quote it that way, you know full well the next sentence of my post referenced a possible miscommunication.

I wouldn’t expect that of you.

The caddie was fine until at least one reporter, Gillis, Mr. Plaid Shorts, et al. started "explaining" to him what he "should" have been paid - as they were exploiting him as part of their own desire for social media "fame" - that's still what this is about. It was none of their business.

If the caddie was fine, why was Tucan pissed off at Kuchar's cheapness long before Gillis started tweeting?

Kuchar is going to be booed when he comes to defend his title.

What does he care? All sounds like KOOOOCH to him.

I still think there is....something missing in this story. The caddie is an experienced caddie. But he just shows up and agrees to the work without knowing what he was going to get paid? Or did he agree to the $5k fee regardless of how Kuchar finished? Or was there something else?

Was the caddie happy at first, agreed to the "$5k regardless" then whoops, Kuchar wins. And then reading all the social media warriors out there - over multiple months - he *then* decided it wasnt enough? He's "humble" according to his emails - but then turns down an additional $15k because he wants more money? And if its not enough for you - why didnt you agree to terms with your player up front?

I also dont know in non-US tournaments, what is the normal policy for local caddies that get used? I just cant believe that say all these guys on the Euro Tour are giving out 10% for wins if they use a local. Also - how many local caddies in cases like this would absolutely jump at that "$5k regardless" option?

Too much that I dont know. For me, something here still doesnt add up.

"Ortiz said he and Kuchar had an agreement for $3,000 plus an unspecified amount of the player's winnings. He was disappointed when he counted $5,000 in the envelope Kuchar handed him that Sunday night." https://www.golfdige...en-advantage-of

So they agreed to $3,000 as a base salary prior to the win. Tucan trusted that he would receive something fair as a bonus for any winnings. Kuchar gave him $2,000 on top of the base $3,000 for a total of $5,000.

Exactly. Kuchar just won over $1m and pays the guy less than 1/2 of 1%. Its a disgusting display of humanity and Kuchar should be ashamed of himself. Now he wants to give him a little more to hush him up and good for El Tucan for sticking to his guns to out Kuchar. Honestly, he is going to be harassed at every tourney and he deserves it.

In life, it's what you do when people aren't looking and this was a neon flashing sign that Kuchar just displayed that tells the world he's just another multi-millionaire underpaying his employees.

A little dramatic no?
