rawdog - I agree w/post #430.

But, didn't that guy mention that Varner asked for a ruling? I can't help but feel this was a "sloppy" ruling if I guy asked for an official ruling and then STILL broke the rule.

Am I taking crazy pills? Certainly I'm missing some important detail....

*Edit to add*

Before I get flamed by the rule purists out there I'm not blaming the official. I'm merely asking questions to help my understanding of the situation.

I think there is some bit of info missing or we don't have an accurate timeline of events.

No comment on your sanity.

Seems like maybe a misunderstanding of the advice given by officials? It's possible officials told him it was ok for his people to bring him an assembled club, but did not specify it had to be assembled before the parts arrived on course? Built then sent out to him is different than sent out to him then built.

_____

"Before the round started, Varner noticed a crack in his driver. He alerted rules officials and told them he intended to start the round with 13 clubs, with a plan to have a driver built and sent out to him while he was on the course. It is legal to start a round with 13 clubs and add one later.

His agent brought the clubhead to the course and a walking scorer brought the shaft. The two parts were then attached and Varner hit a shot with the newly assembled driver. He was then assessed a two-stroke penalty because a player is not allowed to use a club whose parts were assembled on the golf course by anyone, even if it's not the player.

I'm smelling negligence on both parties....

Rules again!!!!!!!!!!!

Explanation was a little unclear, but I was able to figure it out. People with him while out on the course had the parts. Had they been from the clubhouse, etc (see below), he would've been fine. I don't understand how this would prevent a player from having the tour van build him a club suited for XYZ conditions, though. Have options available in the truck and a few holes in, pick the club to meet the conditions.

Rule 4.1b(4) restricts a player from building a club from parts that he or she is carrying or parts that any other person is carrying for him or her. It does not restrict the player from retrieving parts to build a club or having parts brought to him or her.

For example, if a player is permitted to add a club (see Rule 4.1b(1)) or replace a damaged club (see Rule 4.1b(3)), club components brought from the clubhouse (such as the player’s locker), the golf shop, or a manufacturer’s truck, or other similar locations, are not considered to be “carried by anyone for the player during the round ” and are allowed to be assembled by the player or anyone else.

And to be clear-it was explained that it is NOT A NEW RULE. I thought they explained it quite well. It prevents a player from starting with less than 14 clubs and having someone carrying components for him. Then faced with a certain shot having a club assembled to fit the shot. It is really quite logical as a rule in this age of building clubs.

Paul Casey taking my strategy there

I'm missing so much.

What did Paul do?

2 in the water on 17

Have they at least had the decency to compliment Paul on his strong forearms?

It is really quite logical as a rule in this age of building clubs.

Makes sense to me. It's about having the parts readily available to assemble when needed. Imagine a few holes in when Phil needs his righty club...

10years it’s been on the books I think they said. Part of the problem, I think, was the guy they had in the booth. He seemed extremely uncomfortable (Faldo was helping with that), and wasn’t explaining things well. Gannon did a better job trying to help explain the reasoning gor the rule. I think he was really trying to help the guy and diffuse Faldo a bit at the same time.

But parts is parts

My guess is that it is how readily available those parts are that makes a difference. Ie, if the parts are right there on course with you, it would be easy to carry parts with you to assemble a club for that particular shot without incurring a slow play penalty? I'm just spitballing.

You can’t have your CREW or SQUAD carry everything for you when you’re a Nike big gun under contract. Not everyone gets that advantage.

Teddy carry these driver parts, Big D, you carry all these stimulants for me, Terry M, brotha I need you to carry the detailed green maps on you. And run like hell if they ask if you are with me!!!
