Rory -3 through 8 and losing strokes on the greens. Definition of superior ball striking

I would disagree, he is hitting wedge into every green but is not realistically close enough to make the putts at a high volume. Definition of a sub par wedge game.

Strokes Gained Putting is a reflection of "makeability". If you're losing stokes on the greens, you're missing putts that your peers (avg. Tour player) makes on average.

I understand how it works. I just dont think that it tells the whole story is all.. It is well known that he has putting issues. I just think that many of those issues originate on the approach shot.

Rory's proximity to the hole has him at T33 ytd. Last year he was T49...hardly one of the best.

Edit: especially if he supposedly has wedge or short iron into all of these greens.

2018 wedge stats

75-100 : 7th

100-125 : 15th

50-125 : 8th

125-150 : 2nd

The problem is both. Proximity to hole, and putting/conversion. It's all about conversion.

Not sure if I follow the reasoning then since he's +1.1 SG Approach so far. He's approaching the green very well, just not making the putts.

Again, for probably the 1,000th time (I’ve been involved in way too many of these stat discussions), the four and seven foot putts he missed are different than every other four and seven foot putt taken out there today. The stats want to lump them all together like they’re all the same, when we all know (let’s think Augusta) that two putts of the same length can have wild variations in difficulty, and makeability.

I’m not saying his today were anything out of the ordinary, just that simply comparing against the field just based on length doesn’t account for way too many variables.

When Rory does those very flat, cut off wedge shots, he's pretty poor.

And people keep asking him to hit more of those less than full wedge shots. In my unprofessional opinion he accelerates too hard on those leading to mediocre distance control.

Unless shot tracker is incorrect, most of his miss on the fourth hole was directional, not distance...missed to the right of the green.

Past two weeks, these featured groups have played like hot garbage.

Rory is still good, even though it always feels like he should be shooting much lower.

speaking of proximity stats from earlier, Jason Day has been poor for his entire career except for 2014 when he ranked 60th. Every other season has been around 150th. I remember the announcers discussing his poor iron play last season, but that has actually been his norm. Phenomenal putter though, makes up for a few deficiencies.

Also look like Phil has checked out mentally. He wont make it to the weekend. guess he cant blame it on Bay Hill's conditions after all.

I mean I know statistics have their shortcomings, but people are way too quick to dismiss them with "what-ifs" and edge cases.

For example, PGA Tour pros expect to make a 6 foot putt ~70% of the time. Even the worst of sidehill lies only drops that make % rate to ~57%. It matters, but for the most part SG is a great and revealing stat.

So ... what you are saying is a guy who is in the top 33 golfers in the world, where the difference between his current ranking and the next one up is probably less than a foot, is hardly one of the best?
