Yeah that's a bit weird. Wonder what they've done...

 

I wonder if it has something to do with the groove pattern, we've seen a lot of photos of the back of the wedge but nothing from the front...

 

From the photos of the face they have a secondary cut of grooves that are arced across the face, can't imagine that is the revolutionary concept but what do I know!

 

It's not forged or foam filled so I'm just guessing now.

I saw one of the reps at my local golf stores and they mentioned that the CG placements are internal as opposed to adjusting the shape on the back of the wedge like the SM7

If it was tungsten I'd be surprised since there is nothing outside to denote it. Usually club manfacturers like to show where the tungsten is, so they sell better. Weird since this wedge doesn't seem to have any tech (much less like the Glide ones). New grooves? Not saying grooves really count as tech.

I think the tungsten could be a good call. Going on what was said in the video, obviously they have some prototype wedge where this “unique feature” is visible. I struggle with what else it could be, not forged head, not a high toe groove pattern, yes it has grooves between grooves but many manufacturers do that already.

 

Remember Taylor Made have a tungsten plug in the P7.TW irons and it’s not visible and wasn’t massively marketed at first.

March 8 feels late. A lot of players will have their season started by then (my first tournament is Feb 18&19). Shame these won’t be in fitting carts a little earlier.

This is a very interesting video -- what visible tech was there in the blurred prototype that had been made "invisible" in the SM8 he was then handed? Loft for loft and I think shaft for shaft, it looked like he was carrying the SM8 several yards further than SM7 on the same 3/4 swing. Perhaps Vokey has tried to address the complaint that the wedges are comparatively shorter than set wedges (i.e., PW and gap) even at the same lofts? I don't know how I'll feel if he made the SM8 "hotter"

That was the idea behind SM7, especially in the lower lofts.

It should be though. With a lot of OEMs making hotter irons (please let's leave the loft creep topic alone, it's been done to death), there have been a lot of complaints of huge yardage gaps between set PW or GW and traditional-style wedges. TXG has admitted in their last two year-end review videos (the 2018 and 2019 ones) that the Ping Glides have been their best selling wedges because of this. They bring the ball speed back that is traditionally lost when moving to something like an SM7 while still maintaining a high spin rate, great turf interaction, and a look at address that most wouldn't really be able to tell is much different from any other traditional wedge.

Most OEMs I think took notice of how well the Ping stuff performed/how badly their own stuff performed loft-to-loft against set wedges, because now you have Cleveland and Taylormade following suit with hollow-body wedges that still spin great and are every bit as versatile as their previous offerings that weren't. I know where I work the Glide 2.0 and 3.0 were easily the best selling wedges for us in fits the last 2 years. The Mizuno Hot Metal, Cleveland CBX/CBX 2.0, Cleveland RTX4, and Mizuno S18/T20 were in a constant battle for 3rd, with Vokey falling into 4th. We sold a lot of RTX4 due to the stock shaft and lower price point for sure but I wouldn't be surprised if our top sellers for 2020 were Glide 3.0 and CBX2.0.

These have been showing up in a surprisingly large number of tour bags. Not just Titleist players, but also guys without a contract. At least based on all the WITB and tournament pics on here.

To me, the latter is one of the best endorsements of a product. That someone who Is free to play pretty much anything (from a money and capability standpoint), chooses to play these...

The issue of iron to wedge gaps is the reason I've been rethinking the way I buy irons right now. My newest set is just a 5-9 and my PW and GW are the non-GI versions of my club, and then I have two vokeys for sand and lob - where as I used to have 3 vokeys (one in GW).

 

Same thing at the other end of the set, I've dropped the 4 iron in favor of an SGI 4 iron that has dual roles as a DI and par 5 club
