Mizuno vs Titleist blades

Brass_Bullseye

Recommended Posts

I’ve seen a few posts in various threads saying that Mizuno blades are noticeably softer than Titleist blades. For those of you that have hit both, is that the general consensus? I’m playing Titleist 716 CBs right now and I like them, but I don’t love them and I’m getting the itch to go back to a blade. My previous irons were Titleist 710 MB and they were softer but never felt quite soft enough. Do Mizzys actually feel that much better?

I have a set of Titleist MB's and currently testing to see if I want to move onto anything different. I have found the Mizuno's, Srixon's and also the MB from Callaway to feel softer but I am torn because the Titleist irons (MB's and CB's) have such a great profile.

Do they feel better?, well that really comes down to the individual really, they do feel softer for sure though.

My opinion, Mizuno blades and Mizuno "forgings" are softer in general to most other forged clubs. (my opinion of course)

TM Cast is my base line, click, I have a set of 714AP2 (forged) that feel almost as clicky as TM's casted clubs.

I had and old set of Mizuno JPX825pros that were WAY softer then the 714 series (all forged) and similar to my current Cobra Amp Cell pro.

I hit the 714 MB & 718 CB and they are soft but not like the MP4 I hit a little whileback, so yes the Mizuno forged line to me has been the softest in feel to all other lines.

For me I feel like Titleist is softer than Mizuno, and Callaway even softer than both. Someone say I'm crazy. Only way to find out for yourself is to hit them and feel them for yourself. I believe often times feel is really acoustic.

Softer feel, yes, but it is a crap shoot with recent models. Compare to an older model Mizuno blade, and definitely yes.

716 MB to a MP-18 MB, feel was pretty comparable, IMO. Definitely same order of magnitude. Owned both. If you have to have a smaller blade length trough the set, go Titleist.

710/712 compared to MP68/MP4. Well, there really is no comparison for feel. Again, IMO.

Go back further, both MP33 and Titleist 680/681 feel great. Mizuno, a little softer.

I do agree that the 2018 Callaway apex mb was the softest out of those three. I actually ditched my 3-PW MP18 for my current 2-PW Callys.

Nothing wrong with the Titleist 18, feel is preference. Some may prefer a more solid like strike.

> @JJK947 have you seen any difference in the new vs old Mizuno and Titleist blades? Does one perform better? I’d better better? Which would you game? Thanks

As far as performance, blades are all just hunks of metal. It's going to come down to how things like bounce, sole width/camber, leading edge profile, blade lengths, etc. play to your visual preferences, swing tendencies, and condtions you play in. Basic launch monitor numbers like ball speed, launch and spin aren't going to vary a gret deal given the same specs. There really isn't inherently enough to change within the desing of a blade to alter those numbers much given the same specs for loft, length, and shaft. Just my experience, though.

My last two sets of Mizunos: MP4 vs. MP18 with same shafts and exact specs. MP4 thinner sole and topline compared to MP18. Similar strikes produced similar results, exactly what I would expect. Going back to early 2000s with MP33 you get higher lofts which, all else being equal, will result in higher launch and shorter carry. Something about the MP18 didn't feel quite as soft to me compared to MP4 and earlier models, but still feel very good. Since feel is so subjective, I can't really pinpoint a reason for that, though.

Titleist 716/718 MB are interesting with the blunted leading edge. Sole and topline are thinner than MP18 and the blade length is noticeably shorter. Feel is on par with MP18 with the set that I had, just in a slightly different way. So, I think the feel gap has closed, but it's from both directions. Going back to the 660/670/680/690 blades from Titleist I believe the used a different forging facility that would account the feel difference compared to the 7 series from the last ten years. 680/681 are some of my favorite irons ever.

Personally, I think the current Titleist blades feel great in a slightly different way than Mizuno, etc. In the past the feel put me off a bit, just noticeably harder (some say "clicky"). But, honestly, there are a ton of great feeling blades on the market right now. Manufacturers aren't putting anything less than exceptional anymore. The singular marketing focus for the new MP20 on the copper layer and feel improvements kind of points to the fact that other manufacturers have caught up or even surpassed Mizuno where, in the past, they owned that domain.

Right now I'm using Srixon 945's which are endo forged so they feel great. But for me the decision was more about looks and the V-sole works well for me. Out of just Mizuno and Titleist, I like MP4's based on the looks, feel, and modern loft specs.

I've noticed a consistent these in this thread. Almost everyone says that both Titlest and Mizuno MB's were softer in older iterations. Could it be that the ball was softer back then or are you comparing older models to the new with the new ball that everyone is playing? Compared to the old days, the current line of balls is a Rock Flight with a somewhat softer cover.

Feel is almost entirely sound. Mizuno works very hard to make their clubs sound a specific way. The term "Nothing Feels Like a Mizuno," would be more accurately described as "Nothing Sounds Like a Mizuno." Now what you hear and how you associate that sound with softness is going to vary from player to player. It's also going to vary a lot from inside to outside. The actual hardness of the iron isn't going to be negligibly different though.
